Box
Temporary transporting home container:
A large box like a TV shipping container, really solid or a very large plastic storage box.
This should be a very temporary home for the puppy until you decided how you want to confine
him/her when you are sleeping or away from home.
We suggest using either a kiddy gate to confirn it to a small area of your home or a crate.
We use a medium size metal crate, which can be ordered from J-B Wholesale Pet Supplies, Inc.,
item 164-0200-36 #36JB 36” long x 23” wide x 27” high. $54.95 plus shipping. In my opinion,
this is the very best constructed
crate on the market, period!!! Compare prices
and I believe you will find they have the BEST price on all crates!!! Click Here
Please note!! Excessive crate time will result in a personality disorder much like being
chained up outside. Please, please do not do this. Crating for 4 hours at a time or less is the
most desirable. Therefore when you get a new puppy be sure someone can let it out for a
potty break at least every 3-4 hours.
Newspaper
About a foot tall stack of old newspaper to be used as a liner to his/her box.
Tee-shirts
Lots of old tee-shirts or sheets for making a bed.
They are soft and easily washed.
Baby Blanket/Doggie Sweater - Winter
For the first couple of weeks, we
recommend you use a baby blanket to cover the pup, including the head, when taking he/she
from the house to the car etc. if it is cold or windy. They are much too young to be
exposed to the winter elements. Wait a couple of week to start their potty training and
then use the sweater whenever they go outside, unless they are extremely "hot" natured.
Snuggle Safe - Winter
For the first couple of weeks, I recommend using a
Snuggle Safe disk which can be heated in the microwave. Make sure that it is ONLY at one
end the pup must be able to get off the pad if it becomes too hot. If you absolutely can not find these, let me know our Vet stocks them.
Baby Toys
Puppies love baby rattlers, stuffed toys and teething rings. Watch for them at a garage sale and buy lots.
Distilled water
We have well water to which no chemicals have been added.
Chlorine will upset the puppy's intestinal system if he is not switched over
gradually. Give only distilled water the first week. After that gradually
work in a small amount of tap water each day while monitoring the pups stool
to ensure the digestive system is not upset.
Harness & Lead
Get your baby accustomed to a harness right away.
Buy a small size adjustable harness to use, if not immediately, within a few weeks.
DO NOT USE A COLLAR ON A PUP. Even after receiving this warning,
a new owner used a collar. The pup got tangled up and choked to death before
it could be rescued.
