Leon the baby bulldog stole the Pug Crawl in Chicago, IL over the weekend (October 5, 2002).
Two hundred costumed pugs - all ages, colorings and body contours - couldn't compete with one
adorable Bully pup. Even though the semi-annual event is supposed to be pugs-only, Leon's
dad brought him along with big brother Oboe, the black pug, and big sister Bridget, the city
chick. After being wrestled into their costumes - Oboe's a glow-in-the-dark pumpkin shirt and
a witch hat, and Leon's a set of bat wings and a purple-and-black voodoo scrunchie - the dogs
entered Zella's bar and grille and were greeted by a rowdy crowd that included lobster pug,
bride-and-groom pug, workout pug, Men in Black II pug, beefy pug, jack-o-lantern pug, Chicago
Bears pug, stuffed-animal pug, and even numerous NAKED pugs.
Leon's owner, John, had difficulty making his way through the venue, because EVERYBODY wanted
to kiss, hug and snuggle with Leon. And ask John questions. With all the attention, John thought
he was a born-again chick magnet . . . until he passed Leon to Bridget for a minute and suddenly
found himself alone. Everywhere you went, the buzz was "His name is Leon . . . totally darling
- sensitive and gentle . . . Tennessee . . . no, silly, he's a bulldog."
Leon says city life is pretty cool, but he kinda liked the long, cozy nap at the end.
