This Brug is more of an Orange color than #3, but I thought they were the same one. One gets more
sun therefore was initially more orange in color.

Isabella -
9/23/05 She's a blooming fool. This is her 3rd flush of the season, all new blooms, but I'm not going to take pictures unless
there is a change in her coloring.
Pictues Taken 9/13/05
Here she is again, this morning, 9/14/05....
The two blooms high up in the picture belong to another Angel's Trumpet, Unknown Name. My Isabella is
a short bushy plant, but I wonder if it was due solely to the smaller pot size. My research on the
internet did not answer that question. Notice the unknown name brug in the
30 gallon pot is much taller!!!
These blooms lasted until 9/17/05
Hybrid - Un-Named Cross of Ursuline x Australie (Orange Sherbet??)
Pictures taken 9/23/05
I'm having a hard time getting the correct color on these pictures. It like
a creamy peachy/orange that will take your breath away. Before sunrise the pictures are too dark
and after sunrise they apprear too pink. I've made 4 trips outside today checking the color and these
are near but not exactly it. I may have to go buy a box of Orange Sherbert just to compare colors. lol lol

9/19/05 about to bloom
The buds on this Brug are 13 inches long, but they are not very thick which leads me to think it will have
flimsy blooms that won't hold up in the heat, we'll just have to wait and see.

Unknown Pink #5 Brugmansia
It was labeled Apricot but turned out to be pink!! lol lol

Labeled Apricot, but opened white like so many.... pinks I wonder if it is?
To my untrained eye, the next three all look the same. I measured,
searched the internet and turned everything upside down and inside out. I came to the conclusion
that all three of these Brugs are the same. They all have smooth leaves with flowers being identical as far
as I could tell. These were all mislabeled when I received them. Fortunately, I didn't spend money
on them, but I did trade for them and worked hard to raise the cuttings. A serious collector would
be upset but I look at my wall of pink, breath in their fragrance and realize I would do it again.

Bob moved many of the Angel's Trumpets (Brugmansia) into the covered dog runs Monday afternoon to prevent damage from
the high winds of Tropical Storm Katrina. Last night he was delighted to be greeted by this sight.

This morning the color had changed to this....

Double Pink Brugmansia - eBay Craziness
The Brugmansia breeders have gone wild bidding on a double pink just out of quarantine
from Germany. The bid, last time I looked, was $356 for rooted cutting that looked to be about 7 inch tall. DANG

Daturas
a.k.a. Devil's Trumpet, Thorn Apple, Downy Thorn Apple, Horn of Plenty
Now for some pictures of my Daturas which are in bloom.
Purple Speckled White Datura
The first one is a No Name Datura. I believe it's a mutant, but it has the most delightful fragrance. I hadn't noticed it was in bloom
until I walked outside and the fragrance engulfed me. I went looking for the source. It was only one
small bloom at that time and I couldn't believe it had produced that much scent.
Both Brugs & Datura's are night bloomers, when the sun comes up their bloom starts closing up.
Click to enlarge the pictures for a delightfully different Datura
Black Currant Swirl Metel Datura
Amazing, this one plant has had blooms that are double, triple and quadruple. It really keeps our attention.
It's hard to say if this one was a Tobacco Worm Magnet/Trap, kept them from the other plants or did this plant attract the moth which
would have otherwise flown on by . One thing for sure this is the only plant
besides the tomatoes which had these. I picked 12 worms off this one plant.

This was taken at night so the full opening of the flower could be seen. Please click to get an enlarged view.

Red Tree Brain - Fungus
When hurricane Dennis turned into a tropical storm and blew thru, this fungus started to grow on a
stump. It died out when the temperatures go up into the high 90's, then when Katrina turned into a
tropical storm and pounded our property, it started growing again.
Sun comes out and it starts to die back.
10/06/05 - I'm taking inventory of my brugs and you won't believe I have:
10 Unknown Pinks but actually just 8 different varieties since 3 are the same. lol lol lol They are all pretty and most are 6+ ft tall, add to that my 4 Named Pinks and that's a lot of PINK!!
6 CG/Dr Suess 4-7 ft tall ... they are all the same plant regardless of the label.
I've had multiple plants blooming for weeks now and it has been delightful.
BUT the strongest, most pleasant and longest lasting fragrance has been Datura; white with purple specks and a purple metel. I thought a couple of the Brugs actually stink. They smell like "Off" insect repellent.
Making Potting Soil
From Better Homes & Gardens
New Complete Guide To Gardening Copyright 1997
A Simple Soil Mix Recipe
1 part good loamy garden soil or commercial topsoil
1 part organic matter (peat moss, leaf mold, compost)
1 part sand, perlite or vermiculite
¼ part bonemeal or rock phosphate (for phosphorus)
¼ part greensand, granite dust or langbeinite (for potassium)
Container gardeners often develop their own secret recipes for the growing medium for their pots. If you’re an inexperienced container gardener, try this recipe
The soil in the mix holds nutrients and water and buffers changes in pH and nutrients. The organic matter improves texture and hold water and nutrients. The sand, perlite or vermiculite encourages good drainage: however, sand is heavy and may make moving large containers difficult.
-------------------------
Notes From Judy:
Greensand is suppose to be great for clay soil – search the Internet for more information.
1 part sand, IMO, is way too heavy, especially since most commercial Topsoils now contain sand. I would cut that in half and possibly make that ½ part be vermiculite since quality perlite is hard to find. Most of what you can buy in a “big box store” floats to the top when you water the plants.
-------------------------
For the batch of soil I made up specifically for the Datura & Brugs……
I started out with Jungle Pro Mix (no fertilizer - too light weight) potting soil, mix it 1:1 with 40 lb bag of Wal-Mart Potting Soil (no fertilizer - too heavy with sand) added a heaping shovel of peat moss, 2 cups lime and 2 cups 13-13-13, plus 1 cup of time release 20-20-20 and a cup of Alfalfa pellets and a bowl (about 4 cups) of vermiculite.
*** I’ve never used this mix before so let me pot up some Datura & Brugs and let you know how they are doing before you try the above, it may kill the Brugs, looks awful strong now that I've written it down. lol lol They'll either die or grow to be 20 feet tall during one summer.
I'm off to pot up plants.

As you can see via the pictures of the brugs, this mixture worked great. But making up the
soil really worked this 60 year old woman. lol lol

The key to living a good life is to be able to recognize our needs, not wants, but NEEDS as in....
"I needs more plants". lol
