Yesterday Abbey, who had been with us since 1999 had a stroke. She didn't recognize either me or Bob and couldn't walk therefore the decision was made to end her suffering. Although we know it was for the best, it still makes us extremely sad, in this case especially Bob she loved her Mama Bob.

Butterscotch, sister of my beloved Sassy T who past away earlier this year, and Bubba are failing fast. We expect it to be a matter of weeks before we have to make the same decision about them. They are 12 years old, the life expectancy for an English Bulldog is 9 yrs. Butter's mother had a stroke when she was 11, but it was mild and she recovered to live 2 more years. Her head was tilted to the right and I'll admit she looked spooky, but my mother and sister, really hurt my feelings because they kept telling me put her down and couldn't understand when I tried to explain, that she was alert and only asked to be near us. She died peacefully in her sleep when she was 13.

So much sadness has come our way so far this year and we're bracing ourselves for more. - Judy

Peanut Butter Cookie is perfecting his newest 'trick'... "Hugs!" Peanut will stand on his two hind feet and stretch his front feet kinda wide and give me a bulldog hug. If I hug him up tight, he puts his hind feet on my shoes and "dances" with me! What a dog! So "Give me a hug" is added to the list-- "Give me a kiss" "Jump, Jump" and "Go up". (The last command means to find his crate and go up for the night.)
A couple of weeks ago, I ran across a website that allows you to design tee shirts so I put a picture of Peanut on a 'Pre-shrunk' Tee and ordered one. ($20) They printed it the next day and I got in two days later. If I remember, I'll get Judy to snap a photo with me wearing it (or vice versa).

I also designed some stamps with Peanut's picture -- real stamps!!!

Ok here is the first of 2 photos. I will send more later, it's hard to get a picture of him sitting still! In this picture he was playing basketball, he is in Indiana after all. He loves basketball, whenever we try to shoot some hoops he plays defense.

Ok here is the second picture. He is being such a good boy here, he does sit like a prince. He's getting "down" nicely and pretty good at "stay" so long as he has good motivation. (typically food). "come" is touch and go, he's great at it if it follows the "stay" command but he likes to be a little temperamental if we are in the yard or at the dog park and he really just wants to play, I try to just make certain that when he comes he gets lots of lovin'! he's coming along nicely.

(Elle, is another of our bullies)

Hi, Judy!

I just wanted to drop you a quick note with a few pitures of the girls) to let you know how Lucy and Elle are doing. Lucy is such a little doll and so petite. I can't believe she will be a year old on Halloween. She weighs only 38 lbs. and is such a happy little thing and SO beautiful! Lucy sleeps with our older daughter, Katie, every night (of course Elle sleeps with Brad and me!) Elle still doesn't like Lucy very much but she does tolerate her as long as she is left alone! Elle will be 11 years old in December and is as active as she has ever been (Ha! that means 'not very').

I can't believe you guys don't have any puppies right now. I guess it has been a little quite around your house compared to usual! I certainly understand it was time for a break. I know your gang is enjoying having your full attention!

I keep up with the website and love to look at all the pictures and hear how you both are doing. TAKE CARE of yourselves!! Sarah, Brad, Katie and Avery

I've been thinking about "differences in people kind of stuff" and remembered ... I lived in North AR for a couple of years way back when and misunderstood what people were saying all the time. We were out fishing, met a man who kept talking about a hog grabbing his lure. So my mind's eye has this BIG PIG out in the middle of this little inlet chomping down on his fishing line. On the way home, I asked the husband why would the man throw his line out to where the pig was... husband laughed and said he was calling the big fish a "hog".

Another time I was trying to find brackets for a glass shelf. Everyone kept tell me Hyards probably had them. For two weeks I looked for the store, then finally I realized Howard's was one block from my house.

I kept hearing the local radio Shop & Swap read out an ad for Chicken Litter and assumed it was like Kitty Litter, for the chicken to poop on, nope it was chicken droppings used for fertilizer.

I decided to take a trip back home (Memphis, TN) via Greyhound Bus because I didn't want to drive and I'd never been on a bus, about 20 miles north of Little Rock all was quiet and actually boring, so I stood up in the middle of the aisle and asked if they wanted me to entertain them, there were a few calls of encouragement so I started in with my tales of culture differences!!

Just imagine being from the Northern part of the USA and moving to an area South of the Mason-Dixon Line. It would take some getting use to for sure!!! - Judy

It rained 3/4 of an inch here starting about midnight and ended around 8 AM this morning. You know your a serious gardener when you buy a rain gauge. I call these my GIANT Elephant Ears, but people can imagine how large they actually are so I got Bob to pose beside them, he's 6 feet tall.

I took three days off and did absolutely nothing so now I have to catch up with my chores and get ready for a plant swap. I'm hoping I will have the will power to give away plants but NOT bring any back home with me. It will be so tempting!! I'll just have to keep in mind our fight with spider mites for a good portion of the summer and remind myself that I'm not over-wintering plants in the house this year nor are we putting up polly on the porches.

I've gotten a few more updates and pictures of puppies we have placed and will be posting those for you during the week. - Judy

Big Daddy those tights are mine and your cape is the “top sheet” please come back to bed!!

(PS The above was me kidding around, he really didn't dress up in his sleep. I got an email from someone who thought I was serious.)

Thursday - 09/14/06 11:30 AM
Good Morning!! Bob seldom has trouble sleeping, but my lack of sleep because he is doing weird things in his sleep is keeping me exhausted. The doctor dismissed it as one of those things the first time it was discussed with him and a request was made to change his blood pressure medicine, then recently when Bob discussed it with him, he said it was restless leg syndrome and prescribed medication after giving Bob a complete physical, but again refused to change the blood pressure medication.

Well it's time to change to another doctor because it's not restless leg syndrome therefore that medicine had no impact on the problem. I haven't gotten a descent night's sleep in a year. If Bob doesn't sleep in the bed with me I roll and toss, trying to find him, therefore sleeping apart does not work. BUT so far this week I've gotten the dickens scared out of me several times. Once he started snorting like a razorback pig, right in my ear. It was the loudest snorting capable of man. Then he had a loud lengthy conversation with someone on teaching techniques, which I interrupted several times but he continued the moment he fell back to sleep. He must have been fighting terrorist on one occasion, he was the comic character Superman last night and I never can figure out the jerking and twitching he does at other times.

I finally told him he had to get up at 5 AM because I was exhausted and had to have a couple of hours sleep, it had been a bad night but he was totally unaware. Just now he complained of being tired and I responded; well I guess so, last night you dressed up in tights with a cape and saved the world!!

Judy and Bob,
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the pictures of Rhubarb!!! You know he was always one of my favorites. He is quite the handsome boy!!!

Nicky and Rudy are doing great and I need to get John to send some pictures again. Nicky is so athletic and agile, not like any Bullie I have ever seen before. I call him my "rag doll" because he seems to be so loose and not have any bones. If I go to grab him for doing something he shouldn't be doing, he lays down and goes limp like a rag doll. It is so funny and I just can't get mad at his antics even when he is obsessed with my toes!!! He is so loveable but always up to some sort of mischief!!! He still likes me to pull him on my lap from behind and kiss and hug him just like I did when he was little even though he hangs off my lap!!! He just lays there and eats it up. He comes and takes his paw to remind every morning that he wants his "hug" after going out to potty. I'll have to send a picture of that for sure. Rudy has grown so much but still looks smaller than his siblings that I have seen recently on your web page that the other parents have sent. He is too funny also and always "pawing " for attention too. He and Nicky are inseparable and just love eachother to death, you never see one without the other. Rudy is going to be a really great looking Bulldog and in most pictures his eye doesn't even look different than the other one. They are both so sweet and wouldn't hurt even a nasty flea.

Tomorrow, the 10th, makes exactly one year since Eli died and I can't believe it went so fast. We miss him, but praise God that we don't deal with aggressiveness anymore. It is so nice to have four who are totally sweet and can be completely trusted with our 16 month old grandaughter who adores all of them. We never leave them alone with her, but I believe we could and that they would never harm her. Nicky is her favorite, but Rudy is a close second. She calls them "Naynay" and "Ruru" since she can't talk too well and they respond to those names because they love her so much.

I'm sure you are enjoying your much needed break and the nice weather. Take care and keep in touch, Beth

Judy,

We saw your calls for updates and new pictures, so I set aside some time this morning to drop you a note.

Our little Eula (Sweet Caroline) is coming up on her eighth month-birthday (on the 17th) and is a very happy and healthy girl. Maggie got a job at a campus of Penn State, so we relocated from Cape Girardeau, MO to western Pennsylvania, near the Ohio border. We were able to buy a little house, and Eula has really taken to life with a yard! She loves to fetch her frisbee (shortish tosses, thank you!), and we've been working with a trainer to make her the best bulldog she can be before the next addition to our family: a baby boy due in December. :)

We've been keeping up with you and Bob on the website, and we hope your break gives you the rest and peace you've been needing. All the best,Pete and Maggie and Eula.

Both Kate and Sweetie Pie "know" that they are special and they both believe that they are number one! When I'm busy doing 'doggie' chores, they are seeing which one can be closest to me. The crawl under each other, shoulder the other one out, and generally get under foot. Sweetie Pie is sly-- she'll wander about five feet away and lie down, pretending to take a nap. As soon as Kate comes over to check, Sweetie will scamper over and claim "I'm number one!"

Peanut helped me in the flower garden this afternoon. He's such an energetic little English bulldog... not so little anymore. He's almost four years old and weighs a little over fifty pounds... not bad for starting out so little.

So I took some pictures... he never stands still so it's hard to get photos that aren't blurred. And now there's a new story HERE! It's called "The Magic Cart"...

He looked at me with a little grin. "I bet 'cha that it's a Magic Cart and I can fly!!" And with that, he jumped in and looked around and around.

Comments: I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely love this website. It has been very informative to me about a few things that I wasn't quite aware of before, but what makes me love it the most is that I can tell you really do love this breed. I very recently lost my bully do to severe medical problems and honestly, I spend much of my time just looking at pics of other bullies, (babies to adults) and it seems to help me get through this sadness. My Moby would have been 2yrs old this November and I miss her so much. She was my baby and nothing is the same without her, but I must say that I found myself laughing and crying all at the same time when I read Peanuts' story. I really enjoyed that and I just wanted to let you know that Peanut truely brightened up my day. I won't take any more of your time; now go enjoy the group of bullies. Thank you so much, Tammy

Dear Judy and Bob,
I am so glad I found a way to get my babies photos to you. Gypsy refuses to stay OUT of the kennel. She will be out playing with us on the couch and when she decides it is her bedtime she goes in the kennel and is out in seconds. Mac goes to the utility room and Peaches gets in front of the shower in my bathroom. I dont even use the baby gates anymore. :)

The cat in the picture likes to take peaches toy away from her when she is not paying attention and runs up the tree with it. That is why the cat is SO close to peaches. she is attempting to distract and steal... LOL

I saw that you did indeed post almost all of the photos. I hope you enjoy them... well gotta get to chores, the babies are outside awaiting breakfast. They LOVE this weather, especially in the morning times...Always, Jill

Lazy Day! After our breakfast walks with the bullies, I mowed and the bullies took a nap... Our afternoon walks were more energetic. These are pictures of our new stud in the making... Rhubarb Pie! I think Judy wants to call him The Music Man. He is very smart (of course he is... he's Sweetie Pie's little boy). He knows his name as "Rhu!" -- he is crate trained (almost) -- he can unlock his crate and escape -- and he comes when you call him (if he isn't doing anything else)... As you can see, he loves to run, run, run...

Great weather today! Cool enough to spend most of the time outside...

I was on my way to the Dog House for the morning walks when I spied the cutest fawn (about 3 weeks old) and his mother. They stood really still when they saw me and so I stopped, too. Then I called to them and the fawn started toward me but mama wouldn't stand for that and took the little one back into the trees out of sight...

Later, I was having a second cup of coffee and glanced out the back door (it's mostly glass) and there was a very bold humming bird! He was looking for a flower or a feeder but couldn't find one on the back porch. Then he flew right up to the door and gave me the "can't you do anything right" look and flew off.

Less than 20 minutes later, I was staring out the back window when a little female Cardinal caught my eye. She was eating the cat's food that was sitting on a work table about a foot away from me. This was dry cat food shaped like little "o"s. One by one she's crumble each one and pack it away. Then she realized that there was a person right next to her and she turned and flew into the lattice work... I hope she didn't hurt herself...

Jelly Roll has decided that she is going to be a daddy's girl again. She waits until I tell the others to "Go Up!" and then she runs over to get special attention. She loves to crawl up in my lap for petting, hugs and especially kisses...

Good morning Judy!
I know you are still in the process of reading old emails, but I wasn't sure if you received the pictures I sent on Jeb's and Mortymer's birthday. In case you didn't, I wanted to send these. They are different than what I sent in July, but just as cute. Things are going really well. Sophia is already 7 months old, and the baby and Mortymer are like two peas in a pod. He is so good with her, and she loves him. Whenever we walk by him she laughs. He never leaves our side, unless he is sleeping on his throne (aka what used to be OUR loveseat that he has claimed as his own, and only his) he is in the room with us wherever we go. Have a great labor day! - Stephanie

Since I'm still getting emails and telephone calls from people wanting to know why we aren't breeding our Bullies, when we're going to breed again, etc. I thought it wise to explain here on my journal.

At times life takes a ride on a wild bronco and there isn't anything we can do but hang on. I'm hopeful that our wild ride is over at least for a little while. This is what we've gone through during the last 6 months.

- Feb - one of by best friends died of cancer. I held her hand via email and long distance phone calls. Two weeks before she died she call to tell me her time was very near, we discussed how she felt, we both cried and told each other "I love you."
- March - beloved Bully, Sassy T, died taking with her part of my heart
- April - suddenly our house in Memphis sold so we had to quickly move everything up here to the farm the end of April
- May - In the middle of the move my father had a stroke and died a few days later ... I still haven't unpacked everything
- We had 2 litters of puppies, to care for and place. I am so picky about my "babies". One of the deliveries was an emergency c-section for which we had to hunt down a vet on Memorial Day weekend. Finally ended up in Memphis and we paid over $1000 for the delivery of 2 pups.
- We placed our last puppy 8/13/06

Those are just the highlights, there were many smaller traumatic in-between happenings. The good news is we've gotten past them and are moving forward, but we still need time, a vacation if you will, to renew our spirit. - Judy

As for the one entitled "Scary", they say people start to look like their pets, what does it mean if you date someone who looks like your pets? (see boyfriend with her Bullies) Hmm. Subject: Catching Up

We wanted to drop you a note to say "hello!" and catch you up on some of the news about our puppy Eula (aka Sweet Caroline).

She's been a real delight--such a sweet and smart puppy! We put her through the wringer early on, because we got called away on two road trips to Pennsylvania in the first month that we had her...but with frequent stops she came through it ok. She has learned to love the car, as long as she has a nice crate to sleep in.

She's largely house trained (with the crate), though not above a puppy excitement accident now and again. What amazes us is how well she's taken to some rudimentary obedience training. She knows her name, comes, sits, gives her paw, lies down (well, ok, only when she's already sitting), and even rolls over (only when she's already lying down). She sees no reason to walk at heel, though, and seems to prefer chasing our shoes and biting our heels, almost like a working dog trying to herd us. We've explained to her the distinction between the working and non-working group, but she persists. ;)

We've been working on her socialization lately. She loves the park--one of the local parks have geese in a lake, and she's mildly curious about them, but more she enjoys people and especially children. She strains at the lead to meet new friends whenever it's possible, and she is a big hit with most everyone she meets. She's had truckers honk at her, college kids take her picture with their cell phones, and one little girl even taught her a new trick (gimme paw) with a particularly fun stick. She's met a few new dogs, but she really needs the puppy kindergarten classes to get fully comfortable around other dogs.

Healthwise, she's A-OK. We had a small scare where she was wheezing uncontrollably despite mild temps and a cool bath. Turns out her harness was a little tight around her chest, and wheezing was her way of saying her airway was constricted. Bad parents--we didn't notice just how big she got how quickly! She's gone from around 8 pounds to 15.2 in the a little over four weeks! Her vet complimented us on her coat and asked what we were feeding her. Your mix seems to be doing just the trick, though to be honest we're fattening her up with training treats, too. :) She loves to romp around in the grass outside our apartment, so we're not neglecting the exercise with walks and even short jogs (very short, mind you, like from the door to the curb).

Anyway, I'm just gushing away like a proud parent...all of this is pretty standard stuff for puppies, but we did want to say "thanks" again, and let you know Eula is happy and safe in her new pack.- Best,P

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 55 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone content that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love, dogs....smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
