Puppy Gal Welcomes You To

Judy's Journal....

I started this feature for friends and family to answer their "What's going on?" emails, therefore, I probably tell too much, but you are welcome to laugh, cry and sigh with us.

The puppies have been just darling! It's time to place the larger pups into separate living quarters...

Tennessee Rose -- beautiful color!

Except 'Nana Cookie - WIDE AWAKE!!

Saturday - September 15, 2007 4:00 PM
Bob got up a couple of hours before I did. He walked and feed the adult dogs, feed and put in another layer of bedding in the older pups beds and put the newborns with their mothers.

I got to sleep for 5 straight hours without getting up to help take care of the puppies so I feel like a brand new person!!!! Once my feet hit the floor a little after Noon, I was like a whirling devilish in the kitchen ... I put the older pups with their mothers one litter at a time and cleaned their beds while keeping a watchful eye on the mothers. I've kept the washing machine, dryer and dish washer running non-stop. I cooked a big pan of regular cornbread to eat later, then I skillet fried jalapeno fritters which we ate with meatloaf, field peas, green beans, and mashed potatoes which I had cooked on Thursday. Sliced sweet onions and tomatoes made the meal complete.

Since it was cool in the middle of the night I cooked pasta sauce, then made a BIG lasagna. Bob and I each had a serving around 4:30 AM, when I opened the refrigerator door, I noticed there was only half of it left. lol lol Good thing I also made a smaller one in a 5x9 bread pan. I guess Bob liked the lasagna... lol lol It's 73 F with low humidity, It feels so GOOD.

Saturday - September 15, 2007 5:30 AM
The forecast for today is a high of 75° F and a low tonight of 47° F. We can do this!!! Turn on the attic fan and let the cold air in!!!

All existing housing material has a heat build-up so the 47° F won't be near as bad as it would be later when the high for the day doesn't heat up the environment. It will be a welcome relief and the attic fan drawing outside air into the house and exhausting stale air will be OH SO refreshing.

We're up with puppies, but about to go back to bed. I've gotten all sorts of emails about the pictures above of the puppies eating. People really like them.

A young lady from NY State reserved Hooty last night, therefore the only one who is not reserved in Smart Cookie's litter is Nana (Banana Cookie). I'm sure that is because she is so tiny and odd looking at this point. I suppose we could compare her to Peanut Butter Cookie but she is much more developed than he was at this age. Actually she's precious, wiry little thing who steals hearts.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Please remember to hug those you love. - Judy

Friday - September 14, 2007 11:00 AM

Bob and I are so exhausted, we didn't have enough energy to eat breakfast and now it's almost time for lunch. Wanting to finish feeding the puppies in a hurry so we could sit down for a few minutes, I put both Smart Cookie's and Reba's puppies in the pool to feed at the same time. lol lol They were so dang cute we had to take pictures, which means more work for me (editing, sizing, uploading and adding programming code to display them), but I believe some will be priceless. Watch for them a little later today. - Judy

Lisa Marie & Jazzman's Puppies
Darker pup is a female and mostly white is a male.

Suggested names... Teddy Bear and Hound Dog???
Or Danielle and Benjamin??? (Lisa Marie's children)

Sugar Cookie and Jazzman's Puppy named Li'l Cookie

Thursday - September 13, 2007 7:00 PM

Lisa Marie's litter is the last litter for the year!!!

I thought I needed to make that clear since I'm getting emails wanting to know if we will have puppies at Christmas. I dislike the "Christmas Puppy" thing because so many people think a puppy would be a great family gift and something wonderful to talk about but I don't want a puppy of mine to be like so many other discarded presents.

Thursday - September 13, 2007 4:00 PM

Note: Inserted pictures of pups on earlier entry of today.

Thursday - September 13, 2007 2:30 PM

We got back from the vet's office about an hour ago, Lisa Marie had 2 puppies one dark female and one mostly white male. Whew!!!

We had an appointment for 10:30 AM but while they were checking Lisa, 3 emergencies came in, I told them to go ahead because she wasn't an emergency. Because we were gone so long, when we came into the house all the puppies were crying and the grown Bullies were barking, they were hungry. Plus all puppy bedding was soiled, therefore we had to immediately switch into 3rd gear and get everything done. Now, I have a neck/headache. I'm going to take a BC and wash it down with 2 oz of wine to see if that won't prevent it from going into a full blown headache that will put me out of commission for several days. I'm allergic to BC or any other pain reliever so I'll have a price to pay for taking it, but Bob can't do it all by himself.- Judy

Lil' Cookie, daughter of Sugar Cookie & Jazzman

Wednesday - September 12, 2007 10:00 PM

At 7 PM tonight we were at the vet's. Sugar Cookie had one beautiful female puppy via c-section. She didn't display any signs of going into labor until 5:30 PM, then she spit up the bite of canned puppy food she had eaten and refused to eat anything more. Bob took her temperature and sure enough it had dropped. Dr David returned the message we left him immediately and we arranged to meet at 6:30 PM. His assistant was late because she was having a birthday party for her daughter, so the operation didn't actually take place until 7 PM which was fine because Sugar had not experienced any difficulties nor had she had contractions. There were actually 2 puppies but the other one was an extreme waterbaby (all tissue filled with fluid) which we didn't attempt to revive because they die within 24 hours.

Whew!! Life does get interesting. - Judy

Wednesday - September 12, 2007 9:30 AM

Good New!! According to the weather forecast we're going to have a week of cooler day time temperatures. Our high today should be 82° F with a low tonight of 56°. Right now it is 65.6 °F, so I have the windows up and the attic fan running. It is so very nice.

If you are a praying person, please pray for Valerie, the human Aunt of Lily, Petunia's puppy. I got this email last night.

Subject: She's perfect!!! (Lily)
Dear Judy,
I am so excited to get her. When I saw her new pictures my eyes filled with tears. I don't think that I have told you about my sister. She is 35 years old with two boys and just this year in April was diagnosed with breast cancer. Devastated, we couldn't believe when she told us, what a year it has been. Tomorrow she finishes her last chemo treatment at Baptist Hospital in Nashville yeahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!! She has been thru a lot as you know. She is an animal lover herself. When I showed her the pictures of Lily she said she was so precious and couldn't wait to hold her and kiss her velvety little head. It's just amazing what an animal can do for someone!! I just can't hardly wait to have her in my arms. Please keep my sister in your prayers, thanks.

Valerie you are in our prayers. - Judy & Bob

Sugar Cookie, daughter of Smart Cookie, is due to have her puppies between today and Saturday, therefore we're watching her closely for signs of going into labor so that we can take her in for a c-section. Lisa Marie, who has only had one other litter which all died, is due between Wednesday and Sunday, so it's the same routine with her. Things could get tense around here!!

The camera is working better, still not perfect but better, so we have been taking pictures, now I need to get them uploaded. It takes a really long time to review the pictures, reduce their size, lighten them if necessary and produce the code to display them once they are uploaded to the web server host.

All is well here at Dogwood Pond, I'll be back later to post pictures. - Judy

zero emails left to answer, some to friends I just filed because I know they will understand. Oops, there are 10 emails in the mail washer program waiting to be brought into my computer.

Monday - September 10, 2007 7:00 AM

11 emails left to answer ......

Monday - September 10, 2007 5:30 AM

I've been working on emails and have 43 more to go. I messed up really big time in responding to one person and had to send them an email asking that they ignore the prior email. lol lol It's been like that for about 24 hours now ... yesterday I locked us out of the house so when we came back from Corinth we went searching for an unlocked window or another way to get inside. Crazy old Boomer, stray dog that came to stay, got so excited it was like he was jumping for joy, "Oh goody we get to break and enter." Shows you what action he would take if strangers were trying to burgle the place. I also sent "Happy Birthday" emails to two friends, with a subject of "Happy New Year", which was kinda correct but not as I had intended.

I will finish answering emails and reviewing Applications to be a Puppy Parent before I go to bed .. I hope!!! - Judy

Monday - September 10, 2007 6:30 AM

Saturday evening we got a good soaking rain, which we so desperately needed. According to a weather radar website, a small red storm cloud settled over our immediate area for a good long time. We went to Corinth, Mississippi yesterday for groceries and encountered rain so at least some fall crops will have a good start, if people bothered to plant.

There is much to do this morning so I'm off and running. If you are waiting for an answer to an email, please be patient, the puppies come first. - Judy

Saturday - September 8, 2007 6:00 AM

We had ever so light of a shower ... wasn't worth bringing in the clothes from the outside line. I will have to admit that this summer hasn't been as bad on us as last year or maybe it was my attitude. I like to have worked myself to death last summer but this year I decided the plants could survive, or not, on what I was able to give them.

Iris, phlox, azalea and canna are the real survivors here. The deer gave them a taste and decided only if they are about to starve will they come back for more, all of them must be poisonous to deer The deer haven't eaten the Angel's Trumpets (brugmansia, a.k.a. Brugs) but I have spider mites again since the mites natural enemy didn't survive this drought and the Brugs are busy producing self-survival nutritions that cause the mites to thrive. Mercy!! It's OK I'm just going to toss them, too much trouble. I'm more important than the plants.

We have 9 English Bulldog puppies, 2 litters due next week and the 3 Ditch Puppies .... I need to clone the Judy Cooksey of 2005, before my health issues started. lol lol - Judy

This happened 2 years ago but I thought it might make you smile......

In the middle of the night Bob heard a gosh awful racket, all the dogs inside and out were barking. He went outside to find that the "strays that came to stay" had something cornered in the woodpile. Thinking it was the chicken, who likes to take a midnight stroll, he snatched up two of the strays and put them in a dog run, low and behold then there was twice the confusion because that's where the chicken had gone when she 'flew the coop'. The two strays he put in the pen are chasing her and the other two are after the "something" in the woodpile. When Bob ran to save the chicken, the "something" took the opportunity to make a run-for-it, as he opened the dog run gate, the two strays that were after the chicken almost knocked him down, in their rush to take up the pursuit of the "something". Off and into the woods it went, with the four strays hot on it's trail.

Bob reached down, scratched the chicken's back so she'd let him pick her up and return her to her coop. When I asked what the "something" was, he just looked at me for a minute in disbelief that I had ask and said, "it's dark out there". lol lol

Goodness!!! We're working our fool heads off trying to keep up with the demands of puppies and grown Bullies in this heat. Thank The Good Lord, the temps are in the low 90's versus being 3 digits. Triple digits can kill man, bully and beast alike. We can let out one big "Whew" that hopefully the triple digits are over, but at the same time we have the aftermath to deal with on a bully basis. lol lol

Our drought has been so bad that trees have died, plants in the flower beds gave up hope of ever seeing moisture again and some pots which we over-watered have root rot. I'm in the "tough love mode" if a plant can't survive on what I am able to give it then it's best it go ahead and die ... shame on Judy but that is reality.

The dang cucumber beetles (stink bugs) have destroyed my cucumber plants. I can't seem to get rid of them them, they move from location to location. I hate to resort to the "big guns" but I might. Burning scares Bob but of course he is a Yankee who just never faced the realities of Southern Living. lol lol A Baptism by fire some times is the only way, other than using chemicals.... I hate chemicals.

Mercy, I hear puppies crying.... must jump and run. - Judy

Bob determined our decision that it was best for Bubba not to suffer any longer, was the correct decision. He no longer had the strength to stand. We had discussed it prior to Bob taking him to the vets and decided unless the vet thought there was something else that could be done. Lordy, it always hurts.

We rescued Bubba in 1999, he was a good ole loveable bully with physical problems. The average life span for a Bully is 8-10 years and he was 14, so he had a full happy life, the last year of which he was transported around by Bob in the electric garden cart. Bob picked him up, put him in the cart and transported him to an outside exercise pen twice a day so he could potty, feel the fresh air and imagine he was a young stud once again. This picture was taken March 8, 2007. To know Bubba was to love him.- Judy

Tuesday - September 4, 2007 Noon

Another Gracious!! The upstairs a/c is leaking water therefore can't be run without taking the chance of ruining the ceilings downstairs. Our gravel road is blocked because the county is reconstructing the more traveled road. The telephone keeps going out I believe the big earth movers are causing the problem. Bob took Bubba to the vet's office for advice on his condition, then he called but I could only faintly hear what he was saying, "everything is fine", but that doesn't give me a clue about Bubba. He kept trying to call back but there was only static on the telephone line.

If there aren't any postings to my journal and you can't call us, at least you will know why.- Judy

PS Tuesdays are getting to be rough days for me, shaking my head. lol lol

Tuesday - September 4, 2007 6:45 AM

Gracious, I've been up since 4:30 AM and Bob has been up and down all night. We have some difficult situations to deal with this morning, none of which involve the puppies.

Bubba, who is 14 years old is our main concern, he's "down" this morning and probably won't last much longer. If possible we want him to pass away peacefully here at home with us but we don't want him to suffer. He does not appear to be suffering but that could change. The hardest part about loving, is the pain of loosing. - Judy

So much for good intentions, I didn't answer any emails yesterday. I had a busy day taking care of chores which could not wait.

Oops I hear Bully Mamas giving a low bark which means the babies are awake and wanting to be fed. Have a Good Labor Day. - Judy

Sunday - September 2, 2007 6:30 AM

I dove into bed yesterday afternoon and just now got up. I was exhausted!!! Bob did all the chores and slept on the couch so he wouldn't disturb me.

I've gotten behind in answering emails, so that's my project for today. The camera is acting up so no new pictures, it probably just needs new batteries, which I forgot to to purchase on my trip into town last Tuesday.

I hope the story below of my shopping trip made you laugh out loud. It was tough on me then but actually it's pretty funny now. Every time I think about pants seam busting loose, I laugh and am so thankful that it was a double seam and one held. I told Bob that trip was certainly a "Lucy" trip, meaning Lucille Ball, the comedian.

The pups and mothers are doing fine, but they sure do demand a lot of our time. They have just now gotten to the stage were I can watch them so Bob can do other things.

OK Bullies here I come, up and at it, you've slept too long. - Judy

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 55 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone content that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love, dogs....smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
