Sad Christmas Story....

Back in the 80's I was married to "my friend", his children lived with us and we were trying to resurrect a business that we had bought from a family member, so life was tough and money was tight.

I got a call one day from a man in NY who had lost his heart to a Southern beauty back in the 40's while stationed "down here" during WWII. His wife had died and he had always wondered what had become of his first love. He called me because he had information that she had married a man with the same last name as ours. I didn't have any information for him, but I went to the local library did some research, made copies and forwarded them to him.

At Christmas that year I got a card from him and a $20 bill, telling me he had found her in California, talked to her on the phone, etc. Not the perfect ending to a love story, but he no longer wondered, for this he Thanked Me.

The $20 bill was on my desk when I got a letter from a niece of a previous marriage. Such a dear child trying to survive in a horrible environment. Her mother and sister had sold blood for their Thanksgiving dinner because they were in such bad shape financially. The $20 danced in my mind. I asked my husband and the kids what they thought of giving the money to her so she could buy Christmas presents for her family. They readily agreed.

A few days before Christmas I got a wonderful letter from her telling me exactly what she had bought and for whom as Christmas Gifts with the money. My heart was so full of joy at the miracle of kindness which started with the man from New York, pass through my family of 4, and then to my niece who bought gifts for her family of 4. Nine people were touched by his kindness!

At our family Christmas Dinner, while standing at the sink in the kitchen I started to tell my Mother about the Christmas Miracle which I was fortunate enough to be a part of.... When I got to point in the story of sending the $20 to my niece from my previous marriage, she cut me off and said "Why you stupid thing, you".

The hurt was deep and for a long time I stopped telling my story ... but now I tell it to you.
