Wednesday - 3/31/04 - Before Noon
Click Here - For An Update & Pictures Of Jelly Roll - 3/31/04 - 8:30 AM WELL!!!! It's going to be one of those days!!! I'm rushing around taking dogs out to potty, changing their beds, etc. and it started raining on me. Next I begin to fix their breakfast and my first action was going to be to take the neck pork neck bones, which had been cooking in my new crock pot all night out of the broth to cool, leaving the broth to make into gravy. My intent was to removed all the meat from the bones and return it to the pot of gravy. As I removed the lid from the pot, it exploded, spraying glass about 18 inches all the way around. Fortunately, I was not cut but it sure scared me and caused my poor heart plenty of stress. This is a new stainless steel crock pot!!! - 6:30 AM Good Morning!! All is well here, but we are extremely busy so I'll add more later. - Judy Bob and I tried to take a nap since we had been awake off and on all night with the puppies. I had just dozed off when I heard a strange noise, rushing downstairs, this is what I found: ![]() Isn't this a darlin' picture of Bob holding the pup "up" so she could nurse on a top nipple. He is so wonderful!!!! ![]() Click Here For More Pix Of Pups Taken 3/30/04 - 6:30 AM This update is going to be disjointed because that's the way my brain is this morning!!! The pups and mothers are doing fine!!! Bob and I are very tired but a routine is coming together. Jelly is in the same room as the new babies and is really jealous of the time we're giving them. The little stinker anxiously barks for her food and attention although she's getting plenty. I surely do wish Arielle Stine lived closer so she could love on Jelly!! Jeb thinks it's his job to be right in the middle of everything, but Happy told him loud and clear to keep his head out of her whelping pool!! (lol lol) Jeb gave her his famous "what's wrong with you" look. Whenever we take a break, we try to work on the "horsey" website we are creating for our friends, Jan & Bill. You may click here Cloud Farm to view it. Got to run take care of "our gang". Although it's 42 degrees and overcast with a forecast of rain, we're going to "look on the sunny side". Take care and try to do the same!! - Judy I'm sorry but I am just too busy to answer emails... Everything will settled down and we'll have a routine in place soon, until then we aren't getting sleep, we're working too hard for the progress we're making and we are GROUCHY!! Oh gosh, I just remembered, when I went to bed I forgot about the ham I had cooking in the oven!!! Bob must have turned it off, I just don't know if it was before or after it burnt. lol lol- Judy PS The Plants, pots and tree cutters are all expected to arrive on Wednesday!!!!! Mercy!!! ![]() - 8:00 AM - Isn't this a wonderful picture of Peanut!! It has started raining so the trip to the vet's and the tree cutters will be pushed back at least a day. The ham is the most pitiful, dried out thing I've ever cooked. I'm going to throw most of it in a pot and fix ham & dumplings. Doesn't that sound good. The remainder will go into "our gang's" soaked food after it's gone through the food processor. Correction on the dosage of Benadryl that Tara is giving her puppy, it should be one 25 mg tablet, twice a day for 5 days. Puppies and mothers are doing fine. Bob has got to get some sleep today!!! More later, Judy
Saturday - 3/27/04 - Afternoon Judy & Jelly lovin' on each other. I would have dressed better, done a little to my hair, etc. if I had know Bob was going to take our picture, but then we would have missed the moment, isn't she delicious, makes me think of Strawberry Jelly!! Happy's Two Female Puppies
![]()
Smart Cookie's Three Male Puppies
- 7:00 AM All is well with the puppies and only a slight problem with Smart Cookie, she has a mild cough we're sure from the tube being inserted down her throat, she's the only one who has this done because her soft palate is longer than the other females. Bob is holding down the fort while I run into town for a few groceries. Take care and have a good weekend!! - Judy We just got home, both girls went into labor at the same time. Both are doing just fine, fully awake and walked into the house themselves, after stopping to potty. Happy has 2 female babies and Smart Cookie has 3 males. Each of the girls had a "waterbaby" which couldn't be revived, all the tissue is filled with water. No one knows why this happens but it happens often with Bullies. I'm sure we will post pictures of the litters tomorrow. I need to go ahead and say this now, some of you are going to be disappointed because there are not enough puppies for everyone who has expressed interest in a pup from these litters. In this kind of situation, I will have to go with two factors: the length of time a person has been on the Waiting List and if they have kept in touch with me or not. I feel certain we will have an additional litter or two within the next month but as of now I can't give you any additional information because I don't know it myself. - Judy - 1:45 PM It's Show Time!!!! We've called the Vet's office, neither of our regular vets are in the office today, but the office workers know we will be there about 3 PM so we'll see if they will call one of them in or not... Dr Pulse, not our regular vet, is in the office today. He delivered Smart Cookie's last litter and did a wonderful job. I'll update the website when we get back... we're holding our breath because so much can go wrong!!! - Judy Friday - 03/26/04 - 8:00 AM Good Morning!! I just gave the girls a boiled egg which they ate, so no puppies today. My plant order was lost and now they don't have the plants in stock so I just told them to ship whatever they had in Angelwing Begonias & Wandering Jew... no telling what I'll get. The order won't be shipped now until Monday. Also there was a delay with another company in shipping the pots but they should be here the first part of the week. Earlier, I had told Bob that I bet plants, pots and puppies would all arrive at the same time, and now it looks like they will be here right along with the tree cutters...Mercy!! I tried to put the baby chickens on the back porch for a while and BOY am I going to have trouble with the "strays". They are licking their lips and just waiting for an opportunity. Dumpy tried to jumped up on the shelf where I put them.... I can run them away for a few minutes but then back they come. Might be best to give the chicks away before I have hard feelings toward "the strays" because they ate them. - 10:30 AM Upcoming Litters: Won't know if Gabby is "with pups" until 3/31 but I'm doubtful at this point. Treats: The only treats "our gang" gets are Bil-Jac liver treats and Bil-Jack dog biscuits, plus days old small, powdered donuts when they are a puppy for training treats. If the donuts are "old" and kinda dried out they can be broken in quarters which are the right size. Purina Puppy Chow: Nestle's bought out Purina a year or so ago and has now changed the formula, packaging etc. My Bullies do not like it...which is very disturbing since all of "our gang", young old, strays or somebody's throw away, eat the Puppy chow. It has been so convenient. Now the search is on for a replacement. - 3:00 AM Gracious ... I don't think I've gotten any sleep, but surely I have. The girls just gobbled down their early morning snack which means they aren't going into labor at least for several more hours, so I'm going to pull the covers over my head. Bob is going to stay up for a little while just to make sure their snack stays down!! And to love on Jelly!! She's really in a growth spurt, hungry all the time and her ability to eat seems to be improving on a daily basis. Yesterday, I tried to teach her how to lick up liquids, heretofore she's been getting sufficient liquid in her soaked Puppy Chow. I put a tiny bit of buttermilk on my finger because it is thick and has the best chance of not choking her, but she wasn't interested. I then wiped it on her upper lip so she would lick it off, etc. We didn't make much progress so we'll have to keep working at it. Meanwhile Jeb was sitting on the floor almost on my feet, begging for the buttermilk, by acting antsy and licking his lips. (lol lol) Yawnnnn - Judy Thursday - 03/25/04 - 8:00 PM Thank you Tara for some very important information regarding Cherry Eye!!!! From: "Tara Carter" Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2004 2:04 PM Subject: Cherry Eye Churchill, just developed cherry eye. We had an appointment to have surgery meanwhile I followed the advise of another bulldog owner and the cherry eye is getting better on its own. This friend said that every spring her bulldog's cherry eye condition pops out right around the time when humans start getting their allergies. She said that she gives her bulldog Benadryl and it goes away. After checking with my vet, I tried this and indeed - the cherry eye is getting better already and is almost all gone. My vet did say that surgery still may be necessary if the cherry eye keeps popping out in the future, but I just wanted to pass this piece of advice onto your owners - Benadryl does work for cherry eye! I gave one 25 mg. tablet twice a day for 5 days.- Tara Do as Tara did and check with your vet for the correct dosage for your Bully's age and weights!!-- Judy - 4 PM CST ![]() These pictures of Jelly & Jeb were taken this morning. This is her first interaction with any of the grown Bullies. We chose Jeb because he is so gentle with the puppies and doesn't try to "give them a bath" like some of the more gentle grown females.
![]() Click Here To See More! Thursday - 03/25/04 - 11:30 AM CST Still no puppies and the girls ate their breakfast with gusto so we shouldn't be having puppies today. I'm sorry if you have been alarmed, but the county road crew cut the telephone line again therefore I had no way of updating this page or answering emails. Yesterday I saw some men logging so I stopped to talk. I ended up contracting, with a hand shake, for the father and son team to start cutting pine trees in the area around the house and pond. Plus, we're going to take out some of the larger trees around the house which are not pine. This should make for an interesting experience and some good pictures, since they pull the trees out of the woods using a team of horses. While they are working here, at night the horses are going to be kept in the outside Bully exercise pens which are 10'x10' and have an canopy over the top. I wonder what "our gang" is going to think about all this. (lol lol) The time has arrived for new beginnings, elimination of irritations, spring house cleaning and making plans for the future!! The demands upon our time will increase a hundredfold as soon as Smart Cookie & Happy have their "babies" so we have to be ready. We may have other female or two "with pups", it's still a little too early to tell. Chrissy, one of my two Mini-Bulldogs, however is not pregnant. I sincerely appreciate those of you who are on the Waiting List who have been so patient. Please be assured that in just a few more days everything should be settled. In the past week I've gotten many applications to be a Puppy Parents and my usual amount of "hate" mail from those to whom I responded that I did not feel one of "ours" would be right for their environment. I've gotten wonderful emails from people telling me they enjoy our website, others shared stories of their Bullies, and one was a very special "Thank You". I've been asked questions, given FYI information, told about tragedies, sent updated information with pictures on our "babies" who have left home and received many "it's been a long time" emails. I have sent 252 emails of response, whew!!! With rare exception, everyone who writes gets a response. Before you speculate, I did suspend applications for the Waiting List, but I didn't pay the road crew to dig up the telephone lines....lol. - Judy The girls ate their 4 AM snack so they won't be going into labor this morning. I'm going back to bed now - Judy We made it through the night and boy was it a long one, with Bob jumping up and running downstairs to see about the girls every time he heard a noise. They ate their breakfast this morning so they shouldn't be going into labor today which I appreciate since I'm trying to catch up on paperwork and do a little Spring House Cleaning. On Sunday I brought all the plants back into the house because we had freezing weather Sunday and Monday nights. The forecast for the next week is great with most days having a high of 60-70 with highs in the 80's by the end of the week. The low is not suppose to go beyond 50, so it's time to plant!!!! My tomato plants are in the kitchen window, but I threw away the pepper plants because as soon as I got home with them I noticed they had bugs!! 50 cents was not worth the risk of getting an infestation. I'm in need of floating pond plants. If you have an abundance, I would love to talk to you about getting some. I'm in need of a good many. They are impossible to find locally and I just don't have the time to drive to Memphis in an attempt to locate them. I had stopped at several places a couple of weeks ago while there but they hadn't gotten in their stock for the summer. Click Here to respond!
Jelly Bean update - She became 12 weeks old on Sunday but is about the size of a 4 week
old puppy, weighing in at 5 lbs and beefing up nicely. She is very active, attacking her 20 oz
drink bottle with gusto, giving kisses (uck with her snotty nose) nibbling and barking for
her share of the attention ... cute little bark!! Her mental development is also that of
a 4 week old puppy. We had wondered if she would be retarded, but there are no
indications of that being the case, it just seems all her development went into remission
for a while but now she is accelerating in fast forward. These are our thoughts - We are convinced she will progress, but if this is all there is for Jelly, we are extremely pleased for she is a delight. At this point, I would not risk her having the operation to repair her palate, she is just too precious. I prepare her food "just right" and although she sneezes and "carries on" while eating, she is getting nourishment and growing. The eating also seems to be getting easier for her. So hope beyond hope, maybe the opening is closing. Bob said now that she is bigger he can see a dark line which he feels certain is an opening.
I've sent an email to our dear friend, Nan stating the above and asking her to consider
the following before making a decision about getting Jelly. There are all sorts of
liabilities and possible expenses associated with her; she probably will never be able to
run with her other two Bullies, she can't eat their food accidentally or
otherwise, seeds the parrot drops could choke her, she has to be given so much care, she is high
risk for respiratory infections
and Lord only knows about housebreaking. I won't dare attempt to do that until she's much
bigger and stronger which will probably be too late for her to learn. We do not have a
place were the "strays" haven't been and they could have tracked in all sorts of germs.
Although she is darlin', she is a big investment in time, emotions and possibly money. Most
important, she may not survive, it's day to day.
Nan is the only person to whom Jelly is being offered, otherwise she will stay here with us. I've got to get back to work, Judy Both females are eating good, so it's doubtful they will go into labor tonight. I thought you might like to read about Smart Cookie's last litter - 10:00 AM CST Both Happy & Smart Cookie have eaten their breakfast so they shouldn't be going into labor today!!! - 6 :30 AM CST I'm rushing this morning, "our gang" has to go, but just wanted you to know as of two hours ago Bob didn't think either female would be going into labor this morning. I'll go evaluate the situation as of now and get back with you a little later. Our motto for today is, Be Flexible!! - Judy Today is the first possible day for either Happy or Smart Cookie to go into labor!!!!! Happy gobbled down her food, so she won't be going into labor today. Smart Cookie is picking at her food, so time is getting close. We're going to watch her like a hawk and take her temperature off and on all day. Goodness Gracious, the outside temperature is suppose to drop to 25 tonight, so I have to bring in all my plants that I took outside to water and cover up the bushes and plants in the yard which have started growing leaves. I might be able to cover a couple of the small native peach trees so just maybe they will have fruit this year. Last year a sudden dip in temperature froze the blooms. Attention Plant Lovers!!! Let's exchange plant cuttings!!! If you want some cuttings from Wandering Jew or Philodendron to root let me know!!! I've never tried to send anyone cuttings so it would be interesting and educational. The cost to send them shouldn't be too much since no soil would be shipped. I would like to have Angelwing Begonia cuttings. A good attitude starts with a good nights sleep and I slept like a log!!! - Judy
The picture taking session with Sugar Cookie this morning did not go as planned, she was
really afraid of being on the side porch, it's high up off the ground. As you'll be able
to tell her brother is Peanut Butter Cookie. She's be going to the Vet on Monday if I can't
figure out why her left eye is watering. Meanwhile, we're going to wash it with human eye wash
and then try an antihistimine (Wal-Mart's Equate Brand,Chlortab 1/2 tablet twice a day) to rule out an
allergy. Speaking of which, Bob and I have really been having a rough time with Spring
Allergies, I suppose because our house is sitting in the middle of the woods. I woke up a
couple of days ago with both eye lids swollen shut.
I teased about Sleepy & Pepper's Lucy being my Uggy Baby, but Mo really is our Uggy Girl.
Whenever she comes into view my first
thought is "wash cloth, dirty face", but that's just her coloring; pink skin, white hair
with a heavy spray of brindle. Her skin is such a bright pink right now, due to Spring time
irratiants that I remove the pink from the pictures. I hate to give her antihistimines
since she was bred on 2/13 to Jazzman, but if it gets worse I'll be forced to do so.
I use to say, she's ugly but she makes up for it in personality. However I'm not saying that today
because I'm mad at her ... since she's been bred she ignores me but loves on Bob constantly.
(lol) We bred her to Jazzman because his mother is solid white and we are hopeful of some solid
white puppies, which will not turn speckled. We believe she is "with pups" but it will be a few more
days before we will know for sure. Here are their pictures:
More Pictures of Mo - Click Here! More Pictures of Jazzman - Click Here! It's definitely been like spring the last few days, but the temperature is forecasted to dip down to 36 on Sunday night. What few Dogwoods we have left from the long hot summer of three years ago are in bloom and so are the native peach trees I planted about that time. I just love these trees with their purple foliage. They reproduce easily from the peach pits/seeds. Since being on antibiotics keeps me from being able to focused my attention for more than a few minutes, I worked on my house plants yesterday; dividing, potting, pruning then taking the clippings and rooting them. Basically all I had to remember was; pull it out of its pot, put it in a bigger one and add potting soil. In the process I got potting soil and leaves all over the house plus I'm going to need a dump truck full of potting soil to plant all the cuttings I'm trying to root. I won't even discuss the plants I ordered from the wholesale grower. They will probably arrive about the same time as the puppies do. ...lo lol lol. I've got a "Horse Website" to create for a friend, so I'm off and trotting. - Judy
Bob said he would do the driving and I could sleep, if I would just go with him
to Tupelo. He wanted to look for rubber mats to go in the outside pens he's constructing.
Of course I joined him and went inside TSC, Tractor Supply Company, because he wanted my opinion on the
horse stall mats they had in stock. Walking through the store my head snapped in the opposite direction
when I heard baby chickens. You guessed it, This Lucy (as in Lucille Ball), left the store with
6 baby chickens, one of which is named Owie, because the coloring of her face looks like an Owl.
(I'm sure it is a she, although it's impossible to tell). It will be a challenge keeping
'The Strays That Came To Stay' from "getting" them.
Miss Jelly Belly wants to say, "Good Morning". To help you relate to her size, my hand are very small, I wear a size 4 wedding ring. ![]() ![]() ....1 day until the first possible delivery date. Look at these pictures of Happy (above) & Smart Cookie (below lol lol) , don't they look READY!!! ![]() Gestation is on average 63 days but we've had some to deliver on day 60, These girls were bred 5 times, every other day starting 1/21. That means they can deliver any time between 3/21, Sunday and 3/31. What a long time to be worrying about them!!!! Needless to say we don't leave the house, unless they go with us which we don't like to do unless it is extremely important. This same logic is in place
through the first two weeks after the puppies are born. That is why we're trying to round
up all the supplies that we think we will be needing. Have a wonderful weekend!!!! - Judy Good Morning!!! Medical issues first: Warning: Many dogs are allergic to Febreeze, it makes them break out in hives. Thanks to Farrah for taking the time to send us additional Information on Seasonal Flank Alopecia So I won't get sued: Remember to consult your vet before giving your dog any medicine. Sent: Monday, March 15, 2004 8:49 PM Subject: boxer/bullie skin info hello judy! i check your site daily and have for more than a year. i finally found something to write to you about. this is in reference to floyd t. and michelle. she wrote about the skin problem that her bully is having. my boxer has the same thing and i have found that if you go to the local GNC, they have what is called "melatonin" that will prevent this and heal these bald spots quicker. i found this out from a vet who is a lover of boxers and he said he has seen quite a lot of this. this usually happens in the spring time. . . . start giving 2 a day (my boxer is 65 lbs) in early march and it bypasses the whole thing:) farrah - from cabot, arkansas I'm just about "back on my feet". I was up and doing a little yesterday, but by mid- evening I could tell I had over done it!!! Poor Bob said he had to remember not to let me roam the Internet with a credit card in hand if in the future I was both grieving and had an elevated temperature (the medical profession hates for us to refer to it has "having a fever"). He also laughed and said it was a good thing I'm too impatient to be a fan of EBay. He was just teasing me because I ordered some plants. I've never done this before, preferring to actually see what I am buying, but I'm not too old to change. I dearly love Anglewing Begonias and Wandering Jew both of which are very difficult for me to find in our area. The only problem with ordering online was I had to order by the flat which contained 105 plugs, meaning tiny plants all of one kind, i.e. Lois Burke Anglewing Begoina .... I'm not telling how many flats and unrooted cuttings I ended up ordering!!! "Such a Lucy Thing" lol lol lol I've decided Daisy's legacy is the Bully Butt Wiggle, she did it so well. This morning we'll dance for Daisy and be happy the way she would want us to be .... Take care and hug the ones you love!!! - Judy
Daisy in her prime, 1999Those of you who have lost a beloved pet can understand our sorrow. Daisy died in her sleep last night. She wasn't in pain or ill, she was 9 years old and her body just gave way. Her mother was with us for 13 years old and we were hopeful Daisy would be with us as long. - Judy
You are looking at the sweetest Bully that ever walked, Miss Gabby. She loves it when I
sing, "Gabby Goo, your Mama loves you". We bred her to Guitarman but it will be another
week or so before we know if she is "with pups", or not. For more pictures of her Click Here Meanwhile we are trying to take updated pictures
of all "our gang" before the puppies arrive.... 4 more days before the first possible
delivery date. As
of yesterday afternoon, symptoms appeared which convinced me that I have a kidney
infection and one thing is for certain, I have to get back to feeling good before the
puppies get here. I've already started taking medicine so I should be back to my semi-
hyper self in no time. Meanwhile, it's back to bed for me!Here is a video of Jelly Bean that I know you will just love. Click here to download the movie "Jelly Belly - Fun in the Pool!" When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep.
