Bob building raised beds with Melanie trying to help. She tried to get Mr. Cat to join them in the box. I kept telling her it was a raised flower bed and I didn't want Mr. Cat to think it was a litter box.

We're up and going strong this morning. I neglected to make an entry yesterday so I wanted to assure everyone that we are just fine. We had a big day of shopping yesterday and ate lunch out at Chinese buffet where we ran into friends so he had to play catch-up.

Have a wonderful weekend and if you have taken the week as vacation, may it be a pleasant one. - Judy

First round of morning chores completed and I'm going back to bed. - Judy

Climbing Rose beds there are three of these. I under planted with Iris and am planning on planting common Plain Jane Daylilies on the back side. I'm crazy allergic to the dang bites, I've started taking steroids, antibiotics and applying orajel to the bites.

The soil is hardpan therefore the need for raised beds. We're planting clover this fall in hopes of breaking it down around the beds. BigDaddy bought too many roses to wait to build the raised beds the way we normally do ..... compost beds which bring the worms "a runnin" and they breakdown the clay hardpan

Thursday - 06/28/2007 2:00 AM

Up itching .... The drought conditions we have been suffering evidently have cause the chiggers to come looking for fresh meat, they found me yesterday while we were building a new rose bed. The drought, plus the use of Roundup, has caused the grass and weeds in the area we are developing to die, therefore who would have thought chiggers would be there. I've been bit in places no respectable insect would go ... but insects love me. I could be in a crowd of 100 people and the "skeeters" would find me to dine upon.

Lord Have Mercy, a scratching I go!! - Judy

PS This is just an inconvenience I must suffer for living in the middle of the woods, which I would not give up for the world ... although at times I admit I am tempted

Wednesday - 06/27/2007 1:00 PM

This morning I got as far as entering the date and time, then I got distracted by Cherry barking for breakfast, I had their Purina Puppy chow soaking. They love pork liver mixed in their soaked food. I'll feed the rest of the liver to them this morning and since I rotate their meats, I'll probably be cooking chicken for tonight's meal. Instead of making chicken gravy I'll make them chicken and rice, serves the same purpose to thicken the broth but they like a change, don't we all. I buy meat when it is on sale therefore presently have pork roasts, pork livers and chickens in the freezer, plus I have dried lentils, dried beans of all sorts, rice and sweet potatoes in good supply. All is cooked especially for the dogs with garlic and a little rosemary, but no added salt. Before I get 10 emails telling me garlic shouldn't be fed to dogs, let me say I've added these food stuffs and spices to their food for 17 years and before I would believe garlic was detrimental, I would have to see medical proof, not just someone opinion.

I'm preparing an article on Hot Spots which I should have finished by in the morning, if I can keep my mind on what I'm doing .... my plants and puppies keep calling me. Plus, Bob is going to work on the raised beds for his roses and needs my input ... which he pays no mind. lol

Check back later for pictures of plants. - Judy

Bully Heat Stroke Warning!!!!

Summer can be hadazardous to your English Bulldog's health and well being.

Use good judgement at all times and monitor your Bully carefully. A woman called me crying and wanting to know if I had any puppies, her children had been in the back yard playing with their Bully and didn't know it was over-heating, it had a heat stroke and died. Thankfully it wasn't one of my "babies".

Never leave your Bully outside alone without shade when the temperature is above 72F, their coat absorbs the sun's rays and depending upon the Bully it could prove to be fatal. Just because there is shade available doesn't mean your Bully will go to it if it gets hot, they don't realize they are hot, until they are too hot.

Never leave your Bully outside alone although it is confined to a shaded area during the summer, temperatures rise quickly.

Never jog with your Bully.

Never take long walks with your Bully without taking along a wagon to transport it back home should it start to get too hot ... a good idea is to take along plenty of water to drink or pour on it.

Never allow your male Bully to attempt to breed a female, free style. They are too short and compact to complete the act and could very well have a heat stroke or heart attack trying.

Never place your Bully in a plastic kennel in a vehicle during the summer, air flow is too restricted.

Never allow your Bully to be unsupervised in a vehicle, crated or otherwise. A/c systems fail, vehicles run out of gas, etc.

Receiving the below email, resulted in the above entry. Please say a prayer for this Bully and her family.

Comments: Great webpage. We have an American Bulldog, 7 years old, who had a heat stroke 69 hours ago. We were given a 10% of survival and we are on hour 69. She has had 26 units of plasma (working on 27) and is expected to go home in 48 hours. She is a miracle and I wanted to share this with you.

Distilled Bottled Water Warning!!!!

Thank You, Patti for your email!!!

From: "Patti"
Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2007 4:21 PM

Hi Judy,
I thought I would relay something that happened to us and Mr G a couple weeks ago. When we got him you suggested to put him on distilled water in the transition from your water to ours. Well...we kept him on distilled water because our water is rural and very high in chlorine. We thought this would be bad for his tummy and organs. Our vet never said this was a bad idea. Anyway, a couple Saturdays ago he had loose stools on his morning walk but didn't act sick. He helped us do some work outside on our patio (he mainly went in and out cuz it was too warm for him to be out there all the time) but he was very thirsty throughout the day and drank a lot of water. That night he "urped" up a little right before bed. We didn't think anything of it. Sometimes bullies burp and more than air comes with. Midnight we were jarred awake by the sounds of a sick puppy (he is over 1 but will always be a puppy to me). He had it coming out of both ends and boy did it smell sour. Bob took him outside while I cleaned his crate. Back to bed. 2 am same thing. then every half hour from 4:15 until 7:30 when I called the vet. Mr. G's doc happened to be the one on call and wanted to see him. By this time his eyes were dull and he hung his head and boy can a bulldog look pathetic. The vet wanted to keep him there to monitor him. She put him on IV fluids and ran some tests. Everything came back fine. We even did a glowing pill xray thing to make sure there was not a blockage somewhere. Everything checked out fine. He did stay until Tues. when he was keeping water and small amounts of food down. The vet never did find out what caused this in the first place. He was very happy to be home again until his second meal at home and some water. He immediately threw up everything. Well the only thing different from the vet and our house was the water. I did some online checking and distilled water is so pure it is very absorbant. When exposed to air it absorbs carbon dioxide and becomes very acidic. Well if you have a tummy ache the last thing you need is acidic water. I felt terrible. But I thought "distilled water, pure stuff, right?" So no more distilled water for Mr G. He must have known what was causing his ailments cuz he wouldn't drink water for a couple days after that. He would only eat ice cubes. He is now drinking our tap water after it has gone through a Brita filter and he likes it just fine and it is not affecting him. I know this was a long story but I thought you would find it interesting about the distilled water. I was very surprised to learn what I did. I still think Lewis is the cutest thing from your most recent litter. His expression reminds me of Mr G when he was a puppy. And little Hope sounds like she will be a handful. Take care, Patti

Current Weather: 70.9 °F, Clear Humidity: 97%
Predicted Today: High of 89° F, Chance of T-storms 40% chance of precipitation

I'm so proud of the rain we got yesterday. Afterward I took my little spade and dug down into three of the flower beds .... maybe an inch of top soil was damp, not wet, and underneath it was bone dry. From the looks of things it did rain last night so I'll do a little scratching around this morning to see if I need to turn on the sprinklers for a few hours. Thankfully we have a well with wonderful clear, good tasting water and are not therefore dependent upon another source for water.

Yesterday, I potted up 40 or so rose cuttings, but before you get impressed, let me tell you I have never done this before so I don't know if a one of them will sprout roots or not. I read a lot of articles on the Internet but they were so many different ways of doing it that I finally made up my own method, so we'll see. These are old roses which are going to be bulldozed down so I thought I would give it a try, seemed it would be a shame not too. The count includes some stem pieces that I dont' expect to root but I stuck them in the soil anyway. Yes I spent all that time trying to root roses, when I should have been doing all the other stuff around here. Things I know how to do, like wash windows, sweep floors, scrub walls ... lol lol

Bob and I are in the process of building beds for his roses. The hardest part was deciding where to locate them and the design to use. This experience will teach us to snatch up roses just because they are on sale and the bloom is pretty or in some cases the picture on the tag was pretty. At least two of the 14 are climbers, which need something to climb on and at maturity the length of their branches will be 10 to 15 feet and up to 8 feet wide. Can you imagine what space those two alone will fill. Another bush type at maturity will be 6 feet wide and 10 feet tall. lol lol Lord Have Mercy, we will either spend every waking hour trimming rose bushes or give them enough space to start. By the way, the dimensions are NOT on the tags we had to get that information from the Internet. I told Bob no wonder they don't have it on the tag, who in their right mind would buy a 6' x 10' rose bush. Lordy we have been laughing and shaking our heads. I voted for putting them in big pots!! lol (Small voice is saying, "and what are you going to do if those cuttings take".)

Each day is a learning experience ... Judy

Monday - 06/25/2007 6:00 AM

Up and working since 4 AM, therefore the first round of morning chores have been completed. We're taking a coffee break while the dog kibble soaks. Breakfast will probably be fruit since it is so muggy, 71F with 93% humidity. We have a forecasted high today of 93F. Yuck!!

Bessie Smith isn't pregnant so there won't be any puppies born this month after all. I'm having so much fun with Hope that I keep putting off the decision of keeping her or not. This morning she was in the big children's pool without bedding and had the best time chasing a 20 oz empty soda bottle. She's the fastest running little thing imaginable and the bottle is just the right size to slide up under her, therefore she kept over-running it and I'm sure wondering for a second where it had gone. lol lol

Cherry is a hoot also, she's such a "chicken" dog. We had been outside and she had her nose almost touching my leg most of the time. When I walked up onto the porch she froze and wouldn't follow. I went back to where she was and looked in the direction she was staring, then I heard it, a frog croaking. She jumped back afraid it was going to get her. lol lol No amount of persuasion could get her to go pass the frog noise, we couldn't see it only hear. I had to pick her up and take her pass the frog, saying, Cherry you have to confront your fears. I could almost hear her say "uh uh".

I hope you are having a wonderful day, if not, try to make it better by thinking about puppy kisses. - Judy

Sunday - 06/24/2007 Noon

These are new blooms for today. There were many more plants with blooms but I think I've posted pictures of them before.

Roses

This is a Rose that Bob rooted from a cutting last Fall. The ones above were store bought.

Hibiscus Syriacus Double

Sunday - 06/24/2007 9:30 AM

Yesterday we rushed getting the morning chores finished then we went to Tupelo, Mississippi to get dog food at Sam's. We also purchased a small window a/c unit, just in case the temperatures get really high, better to have it on hand than for the stores to be sold out when we need one. The bullies and I can't handle the heat well at all.

Bob bought two more roses which were on sale so that makes 14 he has to plant but first he has to build a new bed. They need full sun but we have trees all around the house so it is going to be a challenge to find the correct location that isn't too far from the house.

Hope is spoiled rotten, I gave her a tiny piece of pork liver that I had cooked for the grown bullies and Cherry. She gobbled it up then barked for more. I'm teaching her bad habits so we best make the decision on "keeping her or not" pretty quick.

I'll be back later to post pictures of the roses, most all of them are in bloom and they are beautiful. - Judy

Go to http://www.puppygal.com/juliets041307.php and see the latest entries! Five pictures of Jackson on his way home to Washington DC have been posted (by me).

Yesterday I met a friend I haven't seen in almost a year. She has had some major health problem and has spent most of her time the last two years either in bed due to seisures or on the road going from doctor to doctor. She's had a total of 17 operations to remove cancerous tumors plus two operations to repair damage caused by a forklift running into her legs several years ago, one of those operations was a total knee replacement ... she still has a smile on her face and her sunny disposition is still intact!! God Love Her!! A true "steel magnolia" if ever I knew one.

About half-way home from the puppy pickup party the van made a loud roaring noise for about 10 minutes, I was about ready to pull over to the side of the road and call a tow truck, but I didn't have Troy's telephone number, so I was easing her home. The noise stopped and then came back for a few minutes. Troy, mechanic, checked it from stem to stern but couldn't find anything wrong which would have caused such a problem, so we picked up it up yesterday. The decision was I've got his telephone number in the van with Bob's cell phone, he's got a tow truck and we're good to go.

I hope you have a wonderful relaxing weekend filled with love. - Judy

Good Morning Everyone!!!

I told you everything I knew that was new yesterday so there really isn't much to say today. While in the kitchen this morning cooking breakfast, I had to take time out to play with Hope. I have created a monster, she loves craklins, so I have to give her a small piece when the grown Bullies get theirs. She hears the sack rattle and barks for her share. Whomever ends up with her is going to have to spoil her, yogurt on her soaked food and pig skins for treats. lol lol

I hope you have a wonderful day - Judy

Wednesday - 06/20/2007 2:00 PM

I did go back to bed and slept until 7:30 when I smelled the aroma of coffee, Bob had placed a cup on my night stand inches from my nose. lol lol

Funny thing happened yesterday. Melanie & Cherry were outside with Bob and I. He was digging holes for some plants, Melanie looked at him and started digging as fast as she could. That girl can move some dirt. I told her to stop and she did, then looked over at him digging, he was still digging so she started it again. Now if I could just get her to dig where I wanted and not fling the dirt so far away.

I have friends who are serious collectors of different plants and they don't think twice about shelling out big bucks for a plant if they want it. I've seen Daylilies priced up to $250 and have a friend who admitted to paying that for one. If ever I pay a 10th that much for a plant, I'll have to have myself committed ... I can just see one of my critters deciding it
might taste good or would make a good bed. Year before last I had to choose between my critters and plants, the critters won. I refuse to have a plant so valuable that it would cause me to get upset with them if they harmed it and they do at times. The cats think pots of vines make excellent beds and Dumpy thinks tall flower pots make a perfect outlook post for guarding the grounds, while Boomer thinks we made the raised beds to lure in rabbits, so he dug a hole deep enough so that he could lay low and pounce on them when one comes near. I had a beautiful pot of begonias sitting on the side porch and all of a sudden they were dead, I'm sure Jeb "hiked his leg" on them. I was weeding the Iris bed and over walked Kate, not only did she lay down on them, she rolled over on her back for me to scratch her tummy. At times like these I just have to swallow hard and let it pass, because it will happen, but how would I have reacted if Kate had laid down on a $250 daylily. It's just NOT going to happen. lol lol

Here are a couple of pictures of blue wildflowers I have growing around a stump, they just appeared and I let them be because they are so delicate. The vine came up in an Iris bed and I let it grow to see what the flower would be, it appears to be a tiny Passion Flower, it's green and about the size of a dine.

The first wildflower has been identified for me, its a Wild Petunia a.k.a Desert Petunia, Florida Bluebells, Mexican Petunia, Mexican Blue Bells (Ruellia brittoniana)

I hope you have enjoyed the pictures of what's blooming today, now for my little vegetable container garden. We certainly are enjoying the fresh loose leaf salads and bell peppers. We should have tomatoes getting ripe soon. The cucumbers are in the pot with the fence inserted just inside so they can climb. There are a couple of squash plants in a pot on down the line but they haven't produced yet because I was so late in getting them planted ... the puppies were our first priority. Yesterday I potted up pepper plants I planted several varieties and I hope they have time to produce this summer. Interesting fact is pepper plants are perennial, but after about 4 years the yield isn't very high

A funny story, I planted those 25 gallon pots in one day and it was fairly crazy around here, but I remembered to mark most of them so I would know what was there. See the second pot of lettuce, it was marked mild peppers and I could have sworn I only planted ONE pot of lettuce, but here it was coming up in the pot. Finally when the peppers started to sprout I figured out what happened ... I remember running Mr Cat out of the pots one afternoon he thought I had made him beds. When he scratched around to get the soil to suit him, he flung some lettuce seeds over into the next pot. lol lol

Whew, this has been a long entry. I hope your week is going well. - Judy

Wednesday - 06/20/2007 5:00 AM

Right now it's 66.6 °F, partly cloudy with 96% humidity .... I'm going back to bed. I won't be able to breath!!! I can do rain and I don't mind working in it but the high humidity I can't handle. - Judy

Tuesday - 06/19/2007 6:00 PM

4:12 AM - First thing I do, in the morning when I get up, is check the weather at WeatherUnderground .. Boy Howdy is there a storm in the North Central part of MS with a tail over in AR, some of which is headed this way, complete with hail which now seems to be located one county over right on the MS/TN stateline. Late last evening a storm pass through but we only got the wind, hopefully this one will leave behind some much needed rain.

1:00 PM - Cracklin's are pig skin that have been deep fried. Now cracklin cornbread can be good or bad, depends upon the cracklins, they have to be fried crisp, not hard as cement. Small pieces are added to the cornbread batter, a little or a lot depending upon how many you like.

5:00 PM - I've been working hard today. We had a shower this morning and cloud cover for the afternoon so it was an excellent day to get stuff done in the yard. I was sweating so hard, I thought for a minute it was sprinkling but it was sweat falling from my hair. lol lol I'm so far behind in working my flower beds, planting, etc.

6:00 PM - I'm going to bed now!!! - Judy

Monday - 06/18/2007 10:00 PM

I bet you all thought that I had taken the day off, no so at all, but I was near to a slug as I get. I kept tabs on Juliet's "babies" that went to their new homes on Saturday. Poor Lewis got car sick, he upchucked on his new "papa", then in the buckets we had them in, inside the van. The "babies" weren't use to noise, heat and movement. Their only outing had been to the vet on Friday, they hadn't been exposed to other people, because then they would have been expose to possible virus or bacteria, so I suppose Saturday was too much of a shock to his little system. Jackson had he-cups for two days and a loose stool, but both seem to be clearing up now.

That's the news from Dogwood Pond, where life is simple but gets complicated at times. - Judy

Blooming Today

Roses - They are Bob's and he knows all the names I don't so I'm just going to upload the pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Passion Flower - this particular one grows wild here and I've let it thrive in one little corner of my flower bed.

Daylilies
I hope you enjoy the pictures of the blooms, we enjoy sharing them with you. - Judy

Sunday - 06/17/2007 5:30 PM

I've been cooking and washing dog sheets and hanging them up outside to dry. We stopped by the farmers market in Jackson, TN yesterday on the way home to buy vegetables since ours "haven't come in" ... that means our plants haven't produced vegetables yet. lol I "fixed" the following:

1) Russian pickles - tomatoes, sweet onion, cucumbers, salt, pepper, vinegar, water, sugar, crushed red peppers. Big container prepared for the refrigerator so we can munch when we want.

2) Yellow squash and onions cooked in butter with salt, pepper, in skillet with lid on high flame to brown, cut off fire when 1/2 done, keep on the lid and let sit until they are cool enough to eat, they will continue cooking for a couple of minutes, the lid traps the moisture.

3) Loose leaf salad fresh picked from my 25 gallon pot. Salad topped with tomatoes, sweet onion, cucumbers, choice of dressing homemade Buttermilk, homemade blue cheese or store bought Italian.

4) Made up a big batch of Shrimp and chicken Egg Roll stuffing for this week, but Bob smelled it cooking and started eating it by itself. lol lol

Bob said it never fails, he tells me he needs to lose some weight and I start cooking. I told him the above I fixed for myself but he was welcome to eat what he wanted.

Here's A Little Hope!!!

Her future is undecided, we are waiting to see how big she will get. Before Holly decided she was finished letting her nurse, I called Hope, Mama's Chunky Girl, but now she has slimmed down, too much so to suit me. Also look at that tail, it's got curves in it but just barely and she holds it straight out.

Sorry I must run, I'll post the pictures of our blooms in the morning. The big bullies ae calling to be let out to potty. - Judy

Saturday - 06/16/2007 5:00 PM

We've been getting out of bed around 4 AM so that we can get our morning chores completed by 10:30 or so because by then it's too hot to be outside. Of course this means early to bed.

Juliet's 4 puppies have demand our 24x7 attention, but they are all went to their new homes today. We're had a puppy pickup party so all the "new parents" can see all the puppies, meet each other and exchange phone numbers etc. It was fun!! We took a lot of pictures and I gave a lot of lectures about being a GOOD puppy parent ... proper feeding, training starts day one, dog/master relationship, they are dogs although we try very hard to see human emotions in them etc., don't try to reason with a dog, each one has a different personality just like with humans, also we never ever tell them that they are a "dog" and if you must say the word, it is best spelled.

I think my internal alarm clock is fixing to snap a main spring, now that the "babies" are with their new parents, I might sleep for a week, so if you don't hear from me you'll know why.

Before I crash, I forced myself to edit and upload the pictures for you all to see. On the way home from Jackson, Bob said he had to agree with Mrs. Harrison, the asthma could very likely have been triggered by the fact that the "babies" would be leaving today. I do get attached to my "babies". - Judy

I woke up having an asthma attack at 1 AM this morning. It took me a couple of hours to get it under control and finally I was able to sleep a couple of more hours before forcing myself to get up, shift into 3rd gear and get the "have to" chores completed in time to leave here at 8 AM to meet the new parents of Juliet's puppies, at 10 AM in Jackson, TN. I was so very please with each one of them. I try very hard to pick people who will cherish the puppies until the day they pass away from old age and I'm confident I picked correctly in the case of Juliet's "babies".

I'll post pictures early in the morning, I'm tired "now". - Judy

Friday - 06/15/2007 4:30 AM

Good Morning Everyone!!

There is much to be done this morning before the temperature gets too high. Right now it is 64F and 92% humidity ... yuck, yuck. I'm off to start the day. First thing I'll do is flip on the attic fan and open windows to let the cool air in, then start the coffee pot, washing machine, dryer and dish washer. "Our gang" will begrudge me the early morning activity by pretenting to be asleep and then about the time I'm ready to take a break with a cup of coffee, they will bark to go out to potty ... payback time. lol lol

If you don't come back to my journal toay, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. - Judy

Our website server has been down .....

Thursday - 06/14/2007 8:00 AM

My journal entries have been boring of late and I came to the conclusion that it is because I'm tired, can't breath right due to high temps and humidity plus this stupid headache. Oops those are just excuses for not having a bright and sunny attitude so ... here comes Sunny.

Tuesday when we went to Corinth for supplies, I stopped at Kroger to load up on Mangos since it was the last day of their 2/$1 sale and I like fruit for breakfast most of the time. Well the mangos were half the size of ones bought previously, disappointment, but I got 4 anyway. Then we were off to Wal-Mart for canned puppy food which I use to add extra flavor to the soaked kibble if I don't have anything cooked. Wal-Mart had big, beautiful Mangos for $.88 each but they have "ad match" which means when you check out if you show them the ad from another grocery in the area they will match the ad price. I got 4 more mangos but I had to chuckle, they were the only item in the fruit department which did not have a name plate. I don't think it would be too far of a stretch to think that Wal-Mart didn't want to identify them because then more people would be doing the "ad match" thing. lol lol

The dogs love me because I got a big bag of cracklins when we were at the butcher shop. Even Melanie will makes a "look at me" sound and lick her lips wanting me to toss her one. I limit them to potty break treats which is normally twice a day and I only give them a 2"x2" piece. Which reminds me I need to start back stopping at the BBQ place to see if they have pork skins. They giggle and say I'm the only white woman who has ever asked for them.

I just cooked breakfast; biscuits, scrambled eggs, deep fried hog jowl and cane syrup. We don't eat like this often and I hadn't had hog jowl in so long I forgot how to cook it, it won't lay flat so I deep fry it. When I was at the butcher shop a woman who had to be pushing 90 ordered hog jowl. I figured if she'd been eatin' it all her life, a couple of slices wouldn't "do me no harm". lol lol lol Oh if you cook up some jowl be sure not to try to eat the rind, skin part on one side, because you're libel to break a tooth. Hope woke us up screaming ... she's tired of being alone. Bob went down to her, brought her back up and put her in the bed with me. Oops little "constantly in motion" Miss, it's too early in the morning, or would that be late at night, to deal with a feisty puppy like you. lol lol

I'm going to try to go back to sleep for a couple of hours. - Judy

Wednesday - 06/13/2007 2:00 PM

I had a long journal entry typed up but my fingers are so sleepy they hit the wrong keys and hung up the UltraEdit software, it wasn't responding so I had to cancel it, loosing all the entry.

We took Reba in to be bred this morning to Peanut, he's such a fun guy!! Well know in about 35 days if she is "with pups" or not. If she's going to have a really big litter, we will be able to tell sooner.

I woke up with a neck/headache around 2 AM and went into the bathroom and sat in the dark. About 30 minutes later Bob flipped on the light and me being there like to have scared the dickens out of him. I told him it was his own fault, I knew how tired he was so I was in there just sitting trying to keep from waking him up!! lol lol

Hope is just fine today, you wouldn't know anything happened the other night. She's spunky and demanding as usual.

Yesterday when in Corinth, we got the critters pork liver and a big sack of bones, which we cooked in the oven after the sun went down. The "strays that came to stay" got raw bones because their digestive system is use to eating raw meat, rabbits and such they catch. I wouldn't dare give the Bullies raw meat of any kind.

I'm off to take a nap, then I'm going to take puppy pictures. - Judy

Tuesday - 06/12/2007 2:00 PM

What a day!! Yesterday driving back from Corinth, the van made a horrible rumble sound twice. It was like I was driving on really rough pavement but I wasn't. I couldn't relate it to the speed I was driving so I'm afraid there is a major problem about to happen, like the crankcase, vans do have those don't they .. lol lol. Bob has gone to take it to our mechanic because we must have it or a rented vehicle for the remainder of this week's activities.

We had a visit from a Deputy Sheriff this morning... someone from our location had dialed 911, oops, it could only be the telephone line where Bob cut it when he was digging holes for the last batch of roses. The Deputy said they had tried to call us but the phone was just static. I've never heard of a telephone line calling 911 to get itself repaired, too funny.

So now I'm prepared for anything happening!!! - Judy

Tuesday - 06/12/2007 11:30 AM

Hope is doing well this morning but we are limiting her food intake, just a little rice with baby formula. She's very alert and pouncing on her stuffed animal so we'll gradually reintroduce her food. When they are so small something like this can be life threatening.

We went to Corinth, MS yesterday to get supplies, didn't find what we needed so we'll have to do some online shopping, but we found all the big box stores had their roses at 50% off. Big Daddy (Bob) searched through all the plants at Lowe's, Wal-Mart and KMart selecting the best from what was left. They were all pretty motley but he ended up buying 12. lol lol That's lots of holes to dig and I'm not sure where he'll find the room for all of them . I think he'll have to get out the chain saw to cut down a couple of tree sapling and build raised beds. Oh Mercy!!

You know I had to help him look because he actually doesn't know about rose diseases. It's not like I do, but two heads are better than one. To cut to the chase I aggravated my old neck injury so I had a terrible pain in my neck and head, woke up this morning with the worse headache. I can't take anything for pain, but Bob told me a few days ago about an article he read "Anti-inflammatories: Reduce inflammation and pain with olive oil". You guessed it, I "gulped" down a tablespoon or two. Now it might have been a fluke but I'm headache free, so I'm going to continue to take a "gulp" when needed and see. Here is the link to the article he read. http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/article/3461/olive-oil.html

I'm off to take a nap, it was a long and stressful night. - Judy

Tuesday - 06/12/2007 3:00 AM

Up with an emergency situation, it's Hope. There is blood in her stool. Bob went down to feed the puppies, saw the blood and came back upstairs to get me . She appears to be fine, playing with her stuffed animals and such so we're giving her medicine and observing her closely. We'll make an evaluation in a couple of hours and take her to the vet if necessary. She is just now 6 weeks old so she's not had her first puppy shot yet and I hate to take them to the vet's office, where there are sick dogs, until after the first shot has had time to possibly go into effect.

Hope is just the cutest little thing ever, very smart and feisty. She's up and out of both the small and large pools in nothing flat. Even the older pups don't try to get out of the big pool, but she's not one to be kept from doing what she wants. lol lol Such a sharp contrast to Cherry Baby, who follows behind me so close she rams her little nose into my legs constantly. Hope might have eaten something off the floor or she could have hurt herself going over the side of the pool. I'm not sure we will ever really know what has happened, it could just be stress from her Mama abruptly deciding she was finished letting her nurse.

Monday - 06/11/2007 12:30 PM

I forgot to tell you that Reba will be bred to Peanut, they have beautiful puppies. This will probably be Reba's last litter so we're anxious for this breeding to be productive.

Monday - 06/11/2007 6:00 AM

Off and running this morning been up since 4:00 AM becauses we have many things on our list to do. One item on the list is that Bob has to do a smear on Reba to see if she is ready to have blood drawn for a progestrone (hormone) reading which indicates which day she should be bred. This is a new technique we are trying instead of going by the smear only and breeding the females 3-4 times each.

Ya'll know I'm always cooking, if not for us then for the dogs. Yesterday I took time out to make cole slaw out of a cabbage I had gotten several days ago. I had it all chopped up with onions and green peppers, looked down at the massive amount and thought we will never eat all of this before it goes bad ... so I put most of it in a big pot, added a can of diced tomatoes and seasoned it well, it was on it's way to being a kinda sweet relish which we use on hot dogs, beans, peas, etc. Well Bob will eat it on anything. I sampled it after I had cooked it down a bit and something was missing. I had forgotten the little more than a dash of cinnamon. The final product was good but it would have been just a bit better had I used brown sugar instead of white, oops I didn't use white sugar I used cane syrup. I swear I have brown sugar somewhere I just couldn't find it yesterday.

We're having rice pudding for breakfast. Big Dogs are calling me to let them out to potty. I just got back from being downstairs but they were faking being asleep. Later - Judy

Hi Judy, I just wanted to give you an update on Bentley (Guitarman & Gabby's pup from 4/25/04).

Bentley is doing GREAT! We took him yesterday to a low cost vaccination clinic in our area and he did awesome! He was weighed, a whoppin 49 pounds right now and actually the vet yesterday said he could stand to put on about 3-5 more pounds! I also just wanted to tell you about the organization that puts on these "clinics". The organization is callled "Luv My Pet". The clinic yesterday was held at the local Petco and the shots were administered by a licensed vet. I know this isn't always the ideal situation but I also know that many people in our country are in a hard place financially and may skip vaccinations for their pets because of the cost. They currently run these in about 23 states. They have different packages, we got the most inclusive which was $68 and included a heartworm test (this cost is about $50 cheaper then his regular vet) and they offered individual shots if your pet didn't need everything. This clinic is for Dogs, Cats & Ferrets (at least it was in our area). I just thought if you could pass along the website information to your other bully owners and journal readers maybe it could be of some use for them... www.luvmypet.com

I can't believe how much joy he brings to our house. I also can't believe after 3 years how much he still surprises me each day. He is a happy, healthy, and VERY spoiled bully! I will post some recent pictures on your Bully Braggin' section.

Hope you and Bob are doing well and have a safe and happy summer! - Veronica

Sunday - 06/10/2007 7:30 AM

Up and working hard for a couple of hours now, we've finally sat down to toast and coffee for breakfast. Kroger had a special on Mango's 2 for $1 and they surely were good for breakfast the past couple of days, so I'm going to make another run into town to replenish my stock before the ad expires on Tuesday. Since I'm on the subject of food, we made up another batch of Egg Rolls at Noon Friday because I had leftover filling from Saturday that I needed to use before it went bad. Merely rolling them up and cooking them in the fryer was really easy and they were even better than the first ones because the filling had more time to soak up the seasonings.

Food again, but this time it's dog food. All the grown dogs and Cherry are getting chicken gravy mixed in with their soak Purina Puppy Chow. It's good for them, they appreciate it and the thighs were only $.39 per pound when I caught them on sale a few months back. Oh and a fellow Bulldog owner send me an email to let me know that the cats should be eating Purina Cat Chow instead of Puppy chow because they need "taurine" in their diet, which is in the Cat Chow but not Puppy Chow. I don't soak their Cat Chow but I do pour a little chicken gravy over the top.

Although we had rain a couple of days ago, the wind has really dried out the plants so I went out early and turned on the sprinklers. A quick walk around the flower beds didn't reveal any new bloom to share, sorry.

I just read this entry and thought it was boring so I'll stop now. lol lol Have a wonderful day! - Judy

Up at 5:30AM to 72F and 85% humidity, yuck yuck!!

All the "must do" chores in the house are complete. Rainy overcast conditions yesterday put me behind on my washing of dog beds therefore I have about 5 loads to get complete this morning before it gets too hot. Right now the attic fan is on which is bring in the cooler outside air and exhausting the hot air within the house created by the appliances. In the past two hours it's only gotten 1 degree hotter so maybe I'll make it, if not the sheets will have to be dried in the middle of the night since the low is suppose to be 63F.

We separated the puppies last night into individual giant storage boxes in an attempt to get them use to be alone before they go to their new parents next weekend. We try our best to start the puppy/parent relationship off right. Sleepless nights with a new puppy can make anyone grouchy. When the puppies leave they take along a blanket or t-shirt and stuffed animal so that our scent will be with them for awhile at least. separating them out causes more work on me because I'm using more sheets, more doggie bowl, etc. but ...

In our quick stroll around the flower beds we found many plants in bloom. Most of them you have already seen but the three flowers displayed, I believe are new to you. The above is a Daylily. Have fun today and don't work too hard trying to catch up on your chores, remember the dirt will be there tomorrow but the ones we love might not. - Judy

At 7AM on the back porch it was 85F with 81% humidity ... definitely a sit down in front of a fan day, but there is too much to do. There are heavy thunderstorms in Northern Arkansas extending up through Missouri which tracking indicates will pass to the north of us. As of now there doesn't appear to be a storm headed our way, but one could materialize out of this sticky hot air.

click to enlarge photo Bambi is in trouble. A herd of deer must have come through in the early morning hours and ate Bob's two rose bushes furthest from the house. Every little leaf is gone all that's left are the stems, even ate the roses and spent blooms. I hope the systemic fungicide he sprayed on the leaves doesn't harm them. Which makes me wonder about whomever or whatever will now consume the deer, being adversely harm by the fungicide, but I suppose the FDA allows worse to be used in the preparation of our meat supply. That went a long way around to nothing didn't it. All I know is I'm not eating deer meat, never have, but I may be inviting hunters to come clear out this herd of deer. Getting on the porch and eating cat food is one thing but eating the rose bushes is another matter all together .

click to enlarge photo We've finished the "must do" morning chores and are now taking a breakfast break, raisin toast and ice cold water. Have a wonderful weekend. - Judy

I took 41 pictures of the puppies this morning but the lighting was just horrible and they aren't worth posting .... maybe these two.

Thursday - 06/07/2007 9:45 AM

It's 77F with 77% humidity, how awful it makes one feel if you attempt to do anything but sit in the shade sipping iced tea. lol lol The weather forecast for today is 95F and partly cloudy. Our hair is actually dripping water and clothes are clinging to our bodies, breathing is heavy and tempers get short... well mine does, Bob doesn't. I can't breath well at all but he is only slightly bothered by the humidity.

We need a walk behind, self propelled mower with big wheels that will cut, mulch and bag. I wonder if such a thing is manufactured. We have a rough and bumpy yard area because I foolishly wanted it to be natural. Plus we have dog holes here and there, holes where what was beneath decomposed, plus an armadillo or maybe all three dogs dug almost to China at the edge of one of my flower beds the other night and that kind of damage is almost impossible for me to ever get smooth. I had noticed a couple of holes, matter of fact stuck a water hose in one just wanting to know how deep the tunnel might be. I caught the Boomer digging out a hidey hole in my hosta bed yesterday, got to the water hose just in time to give him a good soaking so maybe it broke him for awhile ... he's not the brightest dog on the lot so maybe not. Now you can understand why I don't have expensive plants in my beds, most of my plants have been given to me with a promise of more if the "strays that came to stay" destroy them.

Oops I'll return but right now a puppy is crying... Judy

Wednesday - 06/06/2007 8:30 AM

Good Morning!!!

I'll be back later to post a few pictures and bring you up-to-date on the happenings here. The high temperature for today is suppose to be 91F so I'm rushing to get my chores done so humans and Bullies can be under air conditioning by 10:30 AM. - Judy

Tuesday - 06/05/2007 3:44 PM

I forgot to tell you what triggered the asthma attack .... a puppy screaming like it was being killed in the middle of the night. Bob and I both jumped out of bed from a deep sleep and raced downstairs. There we found Hope with her mouth hung between the metal bars on the side of Holly's crate. It took a minute but Bob got her released and thankfully there is no permanent damage. What happened was, Hope decided she wanted dinner and when it didn't come to her, over the side of the pool she went in search of her mother who was a foot away in her crate. Evidently Holly and Hope were mouthing each other through the crate and Hope got her mouth hung. Bob got Holly settled down to let Hope nurse and I went back upstairs where I almost immediately starting have breathing spasms. They scare Bob but I've never been scared when I have them although from what I've read I should be. They started a couple of months after the surgeon removed the lower lobe of my lung due to a cancerous tumor and have since been diagnosed as asthma. It is amazing to me that stress can cause an asthma attack and for a long time I was in denial. it was a human frailty that I didn't want.

Tuesday - 06/05/2007 3:00 PM

Yesterday we made a trip to Tupelo, Mississippi for supplies, mainly a big load of dog food. I drove, sang along with the radio and we had a wonderful outing, without the pressures of the critters, telephone or emails. We came home, unloaded the van, completed the nightly chores and went to bed early ... we had been up and running since 5 AM.

I had asthma attacks in the middle of the night and pretty high blood pressure with a headache this morning. Poor Bob was really worried about me so I kept assuring him I would be fine. Isn't that pitiful, I had to keep reassuring him versus the other way around. lol lol I've got everything under control now but the steroids are causing me to have the "hungries" really bad and my brain is kinda mush.

Home Made Egg Roll Filling

Saturday we ended the day by making homemade chicken and shrimp egg rolls. We bought the wrappers but the filling was homemade, they were great. I looked at filling recipes online, then made up my own. The called for Napa Cabbage, carrots, fresh mushrooms, green onions, plus a lot of other stuff. Lots of preparation which I didn't have the time or patience for doing.

I used a package of slaw mix, canned mushrooms, sweet vidalia onions, stirred fried lightly, seasoned with soy sauce, a slight amount of both chicken bullion and fish bullion, added salad shrimp and frozen chopped chicken. This was a whole lot less trouble. I put a small amount of the stir fry in a bowl and just experimented with seasonings until I got the taste I wanted, then seasoned the whole pan, it had to cool anyway before we could wrap.

If you haven't tried making them, don't put if off because they are so much better than store brought frozen or restaurant made. Bob rolled them up and sealed them with a corn starch paste mix while I deep fried them. The leftovers we put in the refrigerate in a zip loc bad with a couple of paper towels to absorb the moisture. When we got ready to eat these I just heated up the grease and popped them in for 2 minutes. This made them a bit greasier than I wanted so I'll have to experiment with ways to reheat but keeping them crisp.

I'm taking my mushy brain back to be for a short nap and hopefully I will be perky enough to answer emails a little later this afternoon. - Judy

click to enlarge photo Judy got me interested in roses to the point that every time I see a display of roses, I start twitching... Then I look for a healthy bargain... That's how I got a "Climbing America" -- this is the first bud! It needs something to grow on or cling to. It's supposed to grow to fifteen or twenty feet tall! So I'm off to find plans for a rose arbor... Funny how a $5 rose can cost so much!

Monday - 06/04/2007 10:45 AM

Yesterday we were up and running in 3rd gear around 5. Took a coffee break while looking at what was in bloom and taking pictures with Melanie accompanying us. When she walked straight into one of my flower beds, I yelled at her to get out. She disappeared for a few minutes, then reappeared, laid down behind me while I took pictures and waited patiently for me to acknowledge her "now" good behavior. What a dog!!

We had to make a run to Corinth for dog food so on the way we stopped to take pictures of roses at an old homesite. I have permission to take cuttings of any or all of them. I suppose they would let me dig up some of the plants if I wanted but they are so BIG I would have to have a backhoe, so there is no way. There are big, over-grown bushes all around the outside of a chicken pen. I'm guessing they were grown there to keep critters from getting the chickens and I surely wonder how old the roses are. Let me make a good point right here.... I know zero about roses, I just hate for the bulldozer to clear them without me having made at attempt at rooting some cuttings. I really did say that didn't I. lol lol By the way, I hate thorns. I rather deal with a snake and that's saying something, so I'm really going to have to give this some more thought. I've got way too much work to do as it is without adding more, but you only live once!!

I hope this Monday morning finds you in good spirits and that your week will go well. Start the week out smiling at everyone and before you know it, it will be Friday again. - Judy

Bob, grits don't prevent slugs, but I've heard fed them to ants and then they expand, the ants will die. Wonder if it really works. lol lol

Just can't help showin' out a little this morning. We did the garden walk and took pictures. I let him post first so mine would be on top .... imagine an evil little laugh.

Other End of Compost pile

I like to see what will sprout from all the "stuff" I toss into the pile and as you can see there is a good crop of potatoes, plus squash of some kind. We ate many different kind of squash last fall so I'm anxious to see which seeds sprouted and if the fruit they set will be true to the parent. Judy loves a mystery!

We finally got rain, late yesterday afternoon!! We had been under drought conditions so I wanted to dance in it, but it was coming down too hard. It started off hard and stayed that way for a good long while, so I won't have to water the plants for at least a week, unless there are in pots then I'm sure I'll have to hand water by Tuesday.

I hope you are having a peaceful Sunday and are enjoying friends and family. - Judy

The roses are blooming! We're going to try cornmeal as an anti-fungus agent on the roses to prevent the dreaded black spot! CORNMEAL??? That's what I thought but several growers think it's really the answer. Next thing you know, they'll find that grits prevents slugs...

Saturday - 06/02/2007 8:30 AM

A tale of two super nice antique table cloths ... Remembering that I had left the table cloths in the dryer, I rushed downstairs to fold them up before they became wrinkled.... they were missing. I rushed back upstairs to ask Bob what he had done with the load of sheets that had been in the dryer. He had used some of them for dog beds a few minutes before. @#$# We both charged downstairs to find the table cloths and there they were in the crates with Juliet and Holly. Now you know they both had been out to potty and had muddy feet. Meanwhile I'm fussing big time because I had made it a point to tell him, while at the "thrift store" yesterday I had gotten 7 queen and king size sheets to use for dog beds and while looking for sheets had found two great old table cloths. I had washed them with some of the sheets yesterday afternoon and put them in the dryer afterward. Bob empted the dryer and put all the sheets, including the table cloths, on top of one of the crates without folding them, so this morning I put them back in the dryer with the second load of thrift store sheets I had washed and bleached, to remove the wrinkles. It just goes to show you I didn't make myself clear. I didn't think I needed to say, "the great antique table cloths are not to be used as dog beds", but knowing Bob so well I should have known better. Those blasted table cloths are back in the washing machine being washed and bleached one more time. lol lol - Judy

Hello Judy, I am a newby to your website. The reason i came across it, is because i was looking for information regarding skin rashes for bulldogs. I have a bully by the name of Ziggy and will be 2 in July. He has developed this bad skin rash and i have taken him into the vet several times for it and the medicine they have given him seemed to work at the time, but now it does nothing for him. Not even the cotizone shot..it will clear up for 2- 3 days and then his rash will come back. It has gotten real bad and i put skin ointment for Diaper rash on him which seemed to work. But i am desperate at this point and was wondering if you could help. I feel bad that he is stinky and is always itching himself, and since he's so chubby, he has a hard time scrathing himself..This rash he's developed by his genetal area and is spreading to him armpits...Can you please advise on this..Thank you so much...Veronica

Response: Veronica, Skin issues are very complicated and as a result are often misdiagnosed. I have completed extensive research and written an article on canine skin issues. Please go to this link and review the information and follow the links provided to obtain additional information, skin issues

If you have not tried Malaseb Shampoos(TM) please do so first. If your vet does not stock this product, you can order online from Valley Vet Supply (www.valleyvet.com), but you will need a prescription. Doing this first could save you Mega Money!!! I've also been told it can be ordered online without a prescription at Stearns & Fosters but have not attempted to make a purchase.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. - Judy

I'm answering emails this morning and wanted to share some with you. Meanwhile I've been up and in 3rd gear since 4 AM and have completed an unbelievable number of chores, plus cooked breakfast of sausage and biscuits, wrote all about composting in hopes of getting you all interested in doing it if you are not already (when you're hot, you're hot) ... and ... now all of a sudden I've run out of steam, I'm sleepy and would love to go back to bed. It's only 67F now but the forecast is for a high of 88F so I've got to keep going before the heat catches up with me. lol lol - Judy

PS I have pictures to edit, upload and code for display, so I'll return some time today.

There are so many books and methods of training a puppy. Can you tell me what you have used that is most effective please? Each breed has it's own charateristics and I want to make sure I use a method suitable for a Bull Dog.

Thank you for any information. Your website is awesome and you love for the breed is remarkable. - Jan

Response: Jan, I don't use a recognized form of training, I just do what comes naturally for me. I have written several articles which are posted on my website. Here is a link to one which is about training puppies. The most important things to remember are :

1) You must have a master-dog relationship. A dog is not human and does not have "human" emotions although we attempt to credit them for having same.

2) You can't reason with a dog.

3) Do NOT allow your puppy at 5 pounds to do what you do NOT want it to do at 50 pounds

4) Training of your new puppy starts the moment you get it, but have realistic expectations

My husband and I have been looking in the paper and online for an english bulldog. My husband has wanted one for a very long time. They are just adorable and I find that your website is my favorite. I just had a few questions about once you put a deposit down for the babies that are due in June, how does it work on choosing which one we want? I didn't know if we were the first one's to have our name on the list, do we get first pick or does someone else? We want the puppy for a pet not to show. And also do you let people come and look at the puppies or do you just post pictures on the internet and that is how people decide? One more thing what color is the mother of the upcoming litter? Thanks so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Talk to you soon, Niki

Response: Niki, Good Morning!!
I only accept deposits after the person has picked the puppy they want via pictures at my website. The deposit is $100 and will hold the puppy for the person until the release date. Puppies are available on a "first come" basis, I've tried a Waiting List several times and it just complicates my life too much. People have good intentions but unfortunately some do not follow through.

I do not allow people to come visit the pups, after 17 years of raising Bullies I've learned many valuable lessons that have lead me to make this decision: puppy diseases tracked in on people's feet, clothes, etc., a man dropped and killed a puppy, there are so many scammers and thieves, therefore I don't invite strangers into my home, several years ago I gladly invited people to come and "sit awhile", but not now.

Bessie Smith is light red and white.

The first step in getting a puppy is filling out an application, therefore if you are interested, please do so.

Thank you for your interest and Good Luck in your puppy search. Judy

Comments: Hi I am writing to you because you seem like a knowlegable breeder of bullies. I apologize that i am not inquiring in a purchase, but I would sincerly appreciate it if you could answer a question i have about a pup i am looking at from a local breeder. These puppies are 5 weeks old, and some of them in the litter are not walking yet. They seem to just be flat on their bellies. The breeder said that they are just too fat and will walk soon. Is this common with the breed? I am concerned the pups may have some hip problems. thanks in advance for taking the time to read this - Sarah

Response: Sarah,
I'm sorry but I can not be of assistance to you. I would have to see the pups personally to evalulate them plus I have a policy of staying out of other people's business. Good Luck in your search for a bully pup. - Judy

Thank you for your website, it is very helpful. I hoping you will have some advice for my specific situation. I am afraid we are 'bad' English Bulldog parents and am wondering if it's too late? We bought Seargent two years ago from a pet store. We also have a shepard/husky mix and the two get along fine though Seargent insists on getting all the attention first and foremost. He is my baby but i think maybe too much so. We can deal with him hanging out on the couch with us and hogging up the room in the bed, that's fine but we have issues with him pooping and peeing in the house. He will go to the bathroom outside but most of the time he will go outside (with our other dog) and then turn right back around and just wait to come in and won't go out there. He will sneak off in the middle of the night and go in the dining room (right by the sliding door to go outside) or if we block that off, he will go in the bedroom or wherever. He will go in his kennel too. It seems when we try to punish him, (basically all we can seem to come up with is giving him an angry tone), it doesn't affect him one way or the other. He doesn't care if we're mad at him. It is causing a huge strain on my relationship with my fiance because the floors in the dining room are now ruined and we argue about getting rid of him all the time. He also has an ear infection now; i believe because we live by a lake and he went swimming and I think that caused it. I have bought tons of cleaners but it is really hard to clean his ears out. He gets very mad/pouty with us and runs away and even when we pin him down and i succeed in getting an ear cleaned, he is hard to restrain and avoids me for the rest of the night. One time he was so mad at me for cleaning his ear that he even went pee in front of me on the carpet. How do we get him to respect/see us as his master? How can I effectively clean his ears? How do we stop the potty problem? has this lack of discipline gone on for so long that it's too late? We even took him to obedience school to no avail. He only knows 'sit'. He won't come, lay down, speak (or stop speaking) on command at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because i can't give up on him.

From Judy: At first I have no idea what to say to this person, but I do feel strongly that you can judge what type of parent you will be from the behavior of a pet you have raised. Training begins "Day One", but those words will not be of assistance to this person.

Response: Katie, Take your Bully to a vet to have his ears evaluated and get the proper medicine for whatever condition he has. Be honest with them by telling them you can't medicate his ears yourself, therefore would like to be able to drop by the clinic to get assistance from a vet tech in doing this. Also tell the vet about your Bully's behavior problem and ask for a referral to a professional trainer.

I could never begin to explain to people how active it is around here. lol lol Bullies charging to the house like speeding bullets from the outside dog runs when we open their gate because they know I have a meatloaf cooking, Melanie patrolling, Cherry obsessed with my feet to the point of me not being able to walk at times so I have to scoop her up ... she's getting too big to scoop. Then there is Jeb who would do anything to be able to rub his face in Fluffy's fur, absolutely anything. Fluffy standing guard over the dishpan full of food whenever Melanie is around, Melanie could care less about the dry kibble, but nibbles at the alfalfa pellets I throw into the flower beds and compost egg shells are another thing of interest to her .... the list goes on because I have only mentioned a few of the critters here at Dogwood Pond.

We're lazy composters ... I suppose it depends upon if you are trying to grow worms or if you have slugs or the potential for them, some people say those egg shells should be ground into powder for the worms. I try to remember to stomp my egg shells after they are dry and brittle, the sharp edges pierce the mucus lining of slugs causing them to dry out and die. I can rake back the edge of the pile with my hand and get enough worms to go fishing so the worms are thriving without additional assistance.

What is shown here is my little kitchen compost pile, it just off the back porch so I can go out the back door and toss, this encourages me to toss versus throwing it into the trash.

Because we have horrible white clay soil we pick a place where we want the next raised flower bed, build the frame and toss in "stuff", everything you can imagine except for human waste and things which have oil in them (i.e. leftover cooked veggies) add a little lime, a layer of dead leaves or whatever we have on hand, cover with a layer of packaged top soil, just enough so it won't draw flies ... and the worms will come "a-runnin" making the pile their home and in the process aerating the packed clay soil beneath. We work on a bed for a few months, depending upon how much material is available, then let it decompose over winter.

I've found cardboard takes a long time to breakdown in a cold compost pile which is earthworm friendly versus a hot compost pile which is not earthworm friendly but will kill weed seeds, such as those in cow or horse manure. We do not use either of these since we use the lazy compost/cold method.

Although cardboard does attract slugs, so wetting it and laying it about for a couple of days results in a collection of slugs, if you have them in your yard. We didn't until I purchased several pots of cannas from one of the big box stores.

Do not use Sevin Dust on your compost pile, because it will kill the worms which are helping to breakdown the "stuff".

There are so many different ways to compost or return to Mother Earth that which we have taken. It depends upon what you have available and what your other objectives are.

Bucket of "babies" for your viewing pleasure, they are Juliet & Jazzman's babies. When we change out the bedding of their large pool, we put them in the bucket for a minute. As you will notice they are getting too big to fit!!

Melanie, the nanny, watching the puppy, Hope, while I fix her breakfast... Hope is eating mushy food and afterward nursing. Isn't this a precious picture!!

I'm taking pictures of Juliet's puppies this afternoon to post here. They are beautiful. Meanwhile photography can't do justice to the beauty below. I could sit and stare at this lily for a good long time, if only I had the time.

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 55 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone content that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love, dogs....smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
