"Pop Bottle!!" Sunday - February 1, 2009 - 7:40 PM I could not believe the high here was 66 °F, plus the snow prediction has been removed for Monday, but still on for Tuesday. We took advantage of the perfect weather to let the critters out to play in shifts ... the older girl puppies Sammi & Rosie are far too exuberant to be around the other critters. When the cats saw them coming, up a small tree they went. It's not that they are mean, just full of themselves. lol lol I did some fancy sidestepping which saved me from landing on my behind when they came running by too close. They would have clipped my leg for sure if I hadn't quickly stepped out of the way. Sammi found a coke bottle Melanie had been tossing in the air and boy did they have fun. Rosie is the smartest and she was able to out maneuver Sammi and get the bottle, oops Sammi whirled around and gave chase. They were so much fun. Bob and I were both busy all day sweeping, washing, drying and cleaning, knowing another day like this wouldn't come along for awhile. I talked to two families wanting one of the puppies, but I had to say no, the circumstances just were not right. I hope you had a good weekend. - Judy "A Day To Remember!!" Saturday - January 31, 2009 - 9:00 PM This has been one day that I'm not likely to forget any time soon. Our emotions have been battered both up and down all day. It's been extremely sad, joyful and frighting ... what a day. I just returned home from Tupelo, MS, the critters needed food and we've got snow in the forecast for Monday and Tuesday. Lord Have Mercy, the traffic was unbelievable ... worse than the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve Day. What recession???? The malls were full and the restaurant parking lots were solid with vehicles. The first part of the day had been so hectic that I forgot to eat, so with a pounding head I pulled into Taco Bell for a soft taco to go. I no sooner got into the parking lot than the car behind me was run into by another car. Actually it was probably car A's fault because they were making a left hand turn into Taco Bell, but all the traffic was at a stand still due to the signal light and some kind soul had let her through to make a left hand turn. Car B must not have been paying much attention because they hit her on the rear panel. I gave my name and telephone number to car A, just got a feeling she's going to need it. Stores were too crowded for me so I got the critter food, a bottle of wine cause I needed it and headed back home. Before I started out on the trip, Bob tried to give me cash to make my purchases, but I hate having cash. I had much rather have a credit card, charge it and pay it off immediately, than deal with cash. Well wouldn't you know it, having been sick so long I hadn't used my credit cards. I hadn't replaced one card in my "hidee hole" so it had expired. When I tried to use the other one I had, PetSmart got a notification to call the authorization office. They called got the code and I was on my way. When I tried to use it again at the liquor store they got a message for me to call them. Using their telephone I finally got through after the 3rd attempt, they asked me the last 4 digits of my social security number and I said please ask me my grandmother's maiden name, how may cousins I have or anything else but the last 4 digits of my social security number. The card is in the van, I'm in the store standing in front of the cashier. She asked my birth date which I gave to her, she asked again and said that was the problem, what I had given her was not what was on their record. Believe it or not, I'm thinking this is funny because before I talked with this woman the automated part of the system told me I had $18,000 available credit. She referred me to the authorization department where I spoke to a very nice young man. First off I tell him don't ask my social security number cause I refused to memorize the dang thing and the card is in my "hidee hole" in the van, plus I don't want $18,000 worth of liquor, I just want one bottle. He said all was resolved and to please tell the cashier to reprocess the charge. Little did I know that he had been talking to Bob who told them "she headed out to Tupelo earlier and about now should be at PetSmart getting critter food, next stop is the liquor store, you see things have been a little tense here and she needs to chill out a bit with a glass of wine once she gets home." I wished the young man who works in the Authorition Department well, gave him my web site address and asked him to share it with anyone who needed a smile. - Judy PS I'll get around to telling you all the stuff that happened the first part of the day, just not right now ... "Update On English Bulldog Who Couldn't Walk" Saturday - January 31, 2009 - 6:15 AM Rachel called yesterday afternoon and told me her female Bully appears to be just fine. She was so upset about the situation that she called the vet and told her thanks to me that her dog was walking as normal. It's 26 F degrees here and the critters are playing 'possum. The coffee pot is calling my name so perhaps we'll have time to drink a cup before "our gang" decides they want to brave the cold. Have a wonderful weekend and please say a prayer for those who are without electricity due to the storms. - Judy PS A man called wanting one of Strawberry's puppies .... the hair kept raising on my neck little by little, wife starting chemo treatments the next day and he wanted to get her an English Bulldog puppy. Being a cancer survivor he was plucking at my heart strings, but I was also doubtful of her ability to care for the pup while taking chemo. She didn't want anyone to know she was sick and was going back to work 2 days after her chemo treatment, etc. I asked questions, he wasn't forthcoming, kept flubbing words and concepts, plus when I questioned him he claimed to be a poor ole uneducated country boy who was a contractor, etc. Those hairs just kept getting higher I know lots of poor ole uneducated country boys but none like him, therefore I ended the conversation by telling him I just couldn't work out meeting he and his wife to get the pup. After I hung up the telephone and gave the matter some thought, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a scam. A couple traveling through the area trying to get as many high priced dogs as possible and probably giving bogus cahsier or personal checks for payment. "We're Tired Now!!" Friday - January 30, 2009 - 11:00 AM Working 24x7 cleaning and feeding the new litter of puppies every 3 hours, plus taking care of the other members of "our gang" has worn us out. We love our "babies" with all their silly antics, puppy breath and snuggles, but they definitely are a lot of work. When we catch our breath, I'll be back to bring you update you on all the happenings. - Judy "English Bulldog Can't Walk!!" Thursday - January 29, 2009 - 10:50 AM I got a call from a lady named Rachel in Detroit, Michigan yesterday who was very much worried about her female Bully. She would take one or two steps then sit down and spin in the floor. She had taken her to the vet the day before and was told there was a problem with the Bully's legs which the woman did not believe for one second. We put our two heads together and came up with a list of possibilities, #1 being it was due to pain in her back-end, either private area, tail or rectum. Although there was no indication of an infection, the vet had given her a wash for the inverted tail which hadn't helped to resolve the walking problem at all. The Bully was pooping and eliminating urine normally, therefore there didn't seem to be an impact problem. At this point the Bully would not eat unless hand-fed. The owner had checked it's rectum to see if there were was foreign matter, all was clear. I suggested she use, just once, a peroxide wash on the inverted tail because it would foam out any foreign matter and to use a surgical glove to check her "private area" because the Bully had just completed her heat cycle. Bullies really swell during a heat cycle and many pick up debris. If neither of these resolved the problem, I suggested she take her to a different vet. She called back about an hour later to tell me she had found a clump of foreign matter just inside her "private area" and as soon as it was removed the Bully was up running and bouncing in jubilation. My response was a big Hallelujah. Then I said, "Doesn't that just make tears of joy come to your eyes!!" "New Attitude!!" Thursday - January 29, 2009 - 9:30 AM Boy do I need a new attitude! We were up half the night or more with the puppies and I suppose it was the 2:30 AM puppy sucking on my nose that finally got me so awake I couldn't go back to sleep. Drummer Boy woke me up squealing, I put him in the bed with me while Bob heated his Snuggle disc, then he put Drummer Boy back in his storage bucket with a bowl of food, 20 minutes later Drummer Boy squealed again, "Clean up this mess I made". Bob took the clean up chore and I snuggled with the little scamp. He was licking my face, mouthing my ears and all of a sudden he decided my nose was a nipple!! lol lol Needless to say I got out of bed and held him in my lap at the computer until Bob came back upstairs with a cleaned bed. So it went with all the puppies all night long. Today Bob, who got very little sleep, is brain-dead and I'm grouchy. It's time for some Old Time Rock-N-Roll to sooth the soul. - Judy ALF doing Bob Seger - Old Time Rock-N-Roll "Light Dusting of Snow" Wednesday - January 28, 2009 - 11:00 AM I woke up this morning to a light dusting of snow covering the ground, trees and vehicles. Only the driveway was without snow as if to beckon me to go for a drive, for an adventure was awaiting. Then my senses were jarred back to the present situation, puppies crying out it was time for breakfast. lol lol We've just finished the first round of chores and have sit down to have a bite to eat and coffee before round two begins. Yesterday we made a hurried trip to Corinth, MS for supplies after reading the forecast for the next few days and the news reports of 3 inches of snow and ice in Arkansas, which might be headed our way. Then a trip to the trash dumpsters just in case we got snowed in, we didn't want trash piling up. We huffed and puffed, huffed and puffed our way working in 3rd gear making up for the time spent away from the house. Finally around 8 PM we sat down, read the news on the Internet, fed the young pups one last time and fell into bed. I had a man who owns a female bully he got from me call about one of the available male puppies, his wife wanted to breed. I asked if she was still working and if so could she take 2 weeks off work, went on to tell him about AI's and c-sections, most likely if the male was used for a stud he would hike his leg inside the house to mark his territory, etc. He said he would talk to his wife and call me back .... neither of them called back. The reality of raising a litter of English Bulldog puppies will overwhelm most people, plus the outlay of $$$$ is significant. I'm off to baby my babies ... puppy kisses surely make me smile. - Judy "Horrible News Report" Tuesday - January 27, 2009 - 10:15 AM How could a society allow this to happen? The news article is graphic, it took me a long time to read it. Because I became so enraged and my heart hurt for these poor children, I could only read a little then came back to read a little more until I finished the complete article. If you are real tender hearted you may want to skip reading the article and looking at the pictures. Beggars Of Mumbai, India "A Reptile Funny" Monday - January 26, 2009 - 10:15 AM Go to this link to see his picture. Ancient Reptile Still Has What It Takes I need to find out more about his tumor operation .... "He was known for his foul temper and had a tendency to attack other tuatara - forcing the museum to keep him in solitary confinement for many years. But since his operation, Museum tuatara curator Lindsay Hazley said he had had a "major personality transplant". Since I know a few people who could do with a personality transplant. lol lol "I Am Not Grouchy And Dang It, I Mean It!" Monday - January 26, 2009 - 10:15 AM I pulled myself out of bed at 7 AM, I had just been restin'. I heard Strawberry's puppies fussing then they went back to sleep, so I propped a book up in front of my face long enough to drift back off to sleep. A few minutes later Bob stirred, snuggled in for a minute and then said I've got to go feed Hope's litter. I told him to call me when he finished with them and I would help with the other critters. Wouldn't you know Jerry Lee started raising cane the minute Bob stepped into the kitchen so I was forced to get out of bed. My brain is foggy and although I'm not dancing my way through the day, I'm in a good mood. I've brushed aside all problems with positive thoughts ... "every cloud has a silver lining", "things happen for the best" and "you can be happy if you've a mind too". I hope your week has started out on a positive note, but if it hasn't remember to put a smile on your face and a lift in your voice. If it doesn't make you happy, at least it will confuse those who thought you were grouchy. lol lol - Judy "Jerry Lee, English Bulldog Puppy" Sunday - January 25, 2009 - 9:45 AM Jerry Lee is heart broken because he can't roam the house at will and is raising a ruckus. Last night we were so tired I went downstairs and brought him up to our bed. Things worked out very well until he got up turned around and very loudly passed gas in Bob's face. Quickly Bob took him back down stairs. I told him when we got over being so tired, we'll laugh long and hard over that one. I'm laughing this morning, but Bob isn't YET, after being up every 2 hrs with the "babies" he is too tired to appreciate the look he had on his face. lol lol I hope you are having a wonderful weekend.- Judy "Where Did I Put That Puppy" Saturday - January 24, 2009 - 9:00 AM Awaken by a soft, sweet voice calling "Honey", my eyes were open but my brain was still asleep. Bob was trying to gently wake me up so I could tell him where I put Drummer Boy. The kitchen and laundry room were so full of critters, baskets of clean dog beds and piles of dirty ones that I moved him and his storage bucket into the bathroom so I could walk, but forgot to tell Bob. When he got up in the middle of the night to feed the "babies" Drummer Boy was no where in sight and he said he was so tired he didn't think about him being in the bathroom. At least I didn't put him in the refrigerator ... Years ago, asleep on my feet, I suddenly realized I had the refrigerator door open with a puppy in my hand as if to put him in. Actually my objective was to put up the softened puppy food, but it was certainly a LOUD wake up call to my brain when I got the puppy close to the refrigerator shelf. I put the puppy back with the litter and came upstairs to bed, too tired to take off my clothes. I did glance down long enough to see puppy poop on my foot, I gave it a swipe with a tissue and Mother Nature turned off my lights. I'll be back with pictures. - Judy "The Close Of A Very Long Day" Friday - January 23, 2009 - 11:00 PM After everything else, we met two couples for them to get their puppies tonight. I'm picky about who gets my "babies" and I feel very comfortable in having chosen these two couples. I know the puppies are in good hands and will be until they cross the Rainbow Bridge. Bob took pictures and we will be posting them tomorrow. On the downside, unfortunately I had to tell 3 people that they could not have one of the puppies. Their situations just were not right for one of my "babies". There are many breeders who will sell a Bully pup in a heartbeat, no questions asked, as long as the person has the money, but my puppies future means more to us than the money. The new litter is doing well but we are gravely concerned about one puppy. Bob thinks it has a cleft palate but I couldn't see it if it does. I'll probably take it to the vet tomorrow. I'm just too sensitive to force the mouth open as wide as it needs to be in order to get a good view of the palate. Which reminds me ... the first emergency c-section we had in the wee hours of the morning years ago, I was standing with my back against the wall. The vet said Ms. Judy you look a little pinked, to which I responded, my body is trying to decide if it wants to throw up or faint first, might do them simultaneously. Deep breath, feeling a warm glow and off to bed I go. - Judy "Can You OD on Vitamin B????" Friday - January 23, 2009 - 11:30 AM I'm so tired I need an intravenous drip of B-Complex. Can't you just imagine me with a needle in my arm attached to a tube running from my arm to the bag of vitamin B which is hanging on one of those metal poles on wheels. I could work like a whirling dervish pulling it behind me as I went. lol lol So if you talk to me today, please take into consideration that I'm brain dead. At 7 AM Bob finally got me out of the bed, so much to do and not enough time. THEN We had to rush Hope to the vet's for an emergency c-section!!! It was only day 61 from the first time she was bred but so far the puppies are doing fine. The vet tech and I gave up on reviving one little girl and were about to lay her little body on a cold counter when I tried "one more time". That did it and now you couldn't tell which one it was if you didn't know by her coloring. Now this doesn't mean she's out of the woods but it does mean she alive for now and we're taking great care of her. There are 3 males and 2 females. Jazzman is the father and Guitarman is grandfather, so you know they are going to look wonderful!!! We had adrenalin pumping for about 3 hours so now we're just sitting here quietly eating a bowl of grits. I'm so proud I thought to turn the fire out from under them as we raced out the door, I don't think their burning would have caused a house fire but I'm not about to let my mind stay there too long or I'll pop back in the adrenalin mode just thinking about it. Ruckus is being a ruckus. He's getting in the pool with Drummer Boy. He's very gentle and they play kissy face but we are very concerned about an accident, therefore we must make better arrangements. If you live in the Memphis, Bolivar, Jackson Tennessee area and have one of my Bullies which is grown and would consider adopting (free) one with a birth defect which should not impair it's quality of life, please call me at 731-376-0635 to discuss the details. Only a present owner of one of my Bullies will be considered. I've got to run check on the "babies". - Judy "Busy Day Planned" Friday - January 23, 2009 - 7:00 AM It's warmed up here so the critters are demanding to be outside ... me too, me too. I've got to open up the house later, turn the attic fan on and start cleaning. When we're cooped up inside because it's cold or rainy, we all get a little crazy. I don't plan on posting again today, have a wonderful weekend!! - Judy "Beautiful Day!!" Thursday - January 22, 2009 - 3:30 PM Lordy, have you ever been so tired you didn't know which end was up or is that .. which end ought to be up. Speaking of, end of what (?) a bottle, a body or ??? lol lol All is well here. We took Strawberry & Peanut's puppies to the vet for their well puppy physical. Two of the males had small umbilical hernias, which I had repaired, not wanting another vet to operate on one of my "babies", pup or grown if it could be helped. They never skipped a beat and woke up in my arms. Once home I kept their blankets warm and snuggled up with both of them in a big old chair. I knew they were ready to go into a pool when they started giving me kisses ... so sweet. After we finished at the vet's we ran by for a second to see a sick friend, telling her if she needed me to be sure to call, stopped by the grocery store for Pet Milk and then went by the junk store to get more sheets. I like to have a good stock on hand so I call feel free to toss those that get a little worn looking. I bleach the "beegeebers" out of them so it doesn't take long for them to get thin. We took some pictures at the vet's office which I will be posting later today or in the morning. Hope you are having a good day and tomorrow will bring you a special smile. - Judy "Snowed Yesterday" Wednesday - January 21, 2009 - 10:15 AM Gosh it's still too cold to go outside to work. I wonder how long it will take the washing machine on the back porch to thaw? I've been reserching the internet for a product I can use for a detergent that will not be harmful to the critters, plants etc., because we intend to water the plants with the waste water as soon as it's warm. Right now I'm not using any detergent, I'm washing them then bringing them inside for a short wash with detergent added. We took some pictures this morning hopeful that they would make you smile, the ones of Ruckus made me laugh out loud!!
Strawberry & Peanut's Litter
It's 14 degrees F right now!!! Whew!! At 3 AM we had a playful Drummer Boy who wanted to stay in the bed with Mama Judy instead of going back in his box. I had been a tad concerned because he appeared to be standoffish, but the true Drummer Boy came out last night. I of course blamed Bob for stymieing his personality growth when he was allowed to munch down on the burger. Once he tasted it that was all he had on his mind ... eating. I told him when he was older maybe we would go through McDonalds and order him a Big Mac, hold the bun, like we did with his Great Uncle, PepperJack. I hope you have a wonderful day, it's suppose to be 46 F this afternoon so we should be able to get lots of chores completed. - Judy "Another Lucy Idea" Tuesday - January 20, 2009 - 11:15 AM I got it in my mind that a meat product that I raised here would be better for the critters than the growth hormone, antibiotic meat at the grocery, most of which doesn't taste good anyway. I made a mental list of meat animals and went down the line eliminating; cows are too big, pigs are gosh awful diggers and rooters, goats seem to be able to get out of most fences and love to stand on cars, sheep I don't know a thing about but almost bought 2 lambs until the man went up on price before I could pick them up. The only thing I had left on my list was rabbits which produce much more meat per pound of food than other meat animals. I even found a man to process them for me. I bought a right proper cage for raising rabbits and all the extras like water bottles, feeding dishes, food, etc. I'm ready but I don't know what I'm doing so I opt for some cheap rabbits from the flea market. It seemed I walked 5 miles checking out rabbits trying to buy the healthiest, etc. I got 3 and hoped out of the grouping to have at least one male and one female, besides the man only had 3 and he acted like he knew less about them than I did, but I didn't like the looks of any of the other rabbits. We got them home and put them into a smallish dog wire crate for a few minutes until we could get their cage set up. When I went back outside one was missing, I guess the little bugger just slipped between the wire, so we're down to 2 rabbits.
Oh Lordy what a commotion, I should have known better than to get them
considering Boomer & Dumpy at times catch wild rabbits for breakfast. They
knocked over the cage, Bob moved it into an outside dog run only to have the
"strays" sitting outside the gate with mouths watering. By then we were afraid
other critters would get them. Then it happened .... the black one rubbed noses
with me. Dang they must have been some kid's Easter Rabbits, I would never put
them in a stew pot. Bob tried to tell me that there was no way anything I raised
would ever go in a cooking pot, I should have listened. "Rhesus Monkey - Not being rescued by me!!!" Monday - January 19, 2009 - 12:15 PM - Monkey on the Loose in Tampa Bay "Peanut Cookie, English Bulldog Pictures" Monday - January 19, 2009 - 11:00 AM Peanut, father of Strawberry's Litter shown in the above video, and I were being silly ... he said he was ready to leave these cold temperatures. He wanted to go to the Bahammas where there's sun, chicks (female bullies not those crazy chickens) and lots of attention.
P L E A S E ..........
If you want to be toasty warm Peanut, try on this hat!! Mom, you made me sad, it doesn't go with my vacation shirt.
OK, I'll pull it off but you can't go on vacation, still love me? Then Peanut shows how much he loves me.
"Done For The Night" Sunday - January 18, 2009 - 7:00 PM I about worked myself into the ground, but I got caught up on the wash, cooked all those chicken legs and thighs for the critters and took some pictures. Now I am about to fall into bed.
Last night for some reason it was more uncomfortable than when it went down to 8F, I suppose the wind was kickin' up
pretty good. Bob was bringing Drummer Boy upstairs in his plastic storage tub, so we could ensure he didn't get cold.
Not having an extra hand, he sat his plate inside the tub on the way up the stairs. When he sat the tub down, imagine
his surprise to find Drummer Boy sucking on his hamburger patty. When he took it away from him via giving Drummer to me
that little brat was ready to fight for his BEEF. He growled, popped his jaws like he knew how to bite and then got ticked
when we laughed at him. I have never seen a puppy so young be so possessive of anything, but then again, none have ever
had the opportunity to get their chops on a burger before. lol lol Peanut was acting out this afternoon, he said he was ready to leave this cold behind. He wanted he and Bob to go to the Bahammas where there's sun, chicks (female bullies not those crazy chickens) and lots of attention. I'm too tired tonight to edit and size the pictures but trust me you will love them ... come join us tomorrow. - Judy "We're Thawing Out" Sunday - January 18, 2009 - 4:30 PM Devil With The Blue Dress On - MITCH RYDER (Live) Here is another of my favorites, the lyrics are beautiful!! Believe It Or Not - Theme of Greatest American Hero "We're Thawing Out" Sunday - January 18, 2009 - 10:30 AM We're on the thaw so we're in "ketchup" mode, trying to catch up on our chores. Can you imagine trying to wash frozen puppy sheets or being unable to wash down the outside covered and uncovered dog runs!!! Our abilities outside were limited to scooping poop!! This happened a while back but I thought it might make you smile... In the middle of the night Bob heard a gosh awful racket, all the dogs inside and out were barking. He went outside to find that the "strays that came to stay" had something cornered in the woodpile.
Thinking it was the chicken, who
likes to take a midnight stroll, he snatched up two of the strays and put them
in a dog run, low and behold then there was twice the confusion because that's
where the chicken had gone when she 'flew the coop'. The two strays he put in
the pen are chasing her and the other two are after the "something" in the
woodpile. When Bob ran to save the chicken, the "something" took the opportunity
to make a run-for-it, as he opened the dog run gate, the two strays that were
after the chicken almost knocked him down, in their rush to take up the pursuit
of the "something". Off and into the woods it went, with the four strays hot on
it's trail.Bob reached down, scratched the chicken's back so she'd let him pick her up and return her to her coop. When I asked what the "something" was, he just looked at me for a minute in disbelief that I had ask and said, "it's dark out there". Update: That hen was mean, mean but we sure didn't want anything to happen to her. She is no longer with us, nor is the stray dog, Ernie, who killed her. I had to pay a vet tech to find him a home where no chickens were known to roam. He's happy and Jeb is relieved that the darn hen isn't around to peck him on his behind ever chance she got. Lord Have Mercy, it gets crazy around here. You all have a good one!! - Judy PS I'll be back later with an update on Drummer Boy, might need to change his name to Burger King, plus my Just Like Lucy tale about the rabbits. "8 F This Morning" Friday - January 16, 2009 11:30 AM JUDY GARLAND "GET HAPPY" (SUMMER STOCK, 1950) In the bedroom upstairs it's only 42F now. We had to put a portable heater next to my computer to warm it up before it would run without a horrible noise which made me think it was going to rip apart. I don't know how cold it got overnight but the ice in my water bottle was still frozen. DogGone!!! I'm so bad, in the middle of the night I made Bob get up and take care of Drummer Boy when he started fretting. I was toasty warm and fast asleep. I'm the one that drove all over three counties the prior two days and my poor old leg was acting up ... sounds like a good excuse to me and he finally bought it. lol lol I'm going downstairs and cook, cook, cook ... it warms the house and the soul. I'm driving the critters crazy cooking pan after pan of chicken. Also I think I've found a new recipe for their "stew" and it seems they can't get enough. I told Bob I've fix more food the last 48 hours than I normally feed them in a week. Melanie is shouting out that this is her kind of weather, Peanut is dreaming of a vacation in a warmer climate, Li'l Cookie wants to build a snowman and on it goes, they are all talking. Take it from me, don't teach your critters how to talk, it's worse than having a bunch of chattering children. We're off to install the LP gas fireplace. - Judy "12 F Here" Thursday - January 15, 2009 8:30 PM We've run all over two or three counties, looked at heaters, furnaces both electric and LP gas. Just to be honest, LP gas kinda scares me because it pools instead of dissipating and we've had two hair raising experiences, but it's cheaper than electric so what's a body to do. We finally decided upon installing a LP fire place and insert in the living room because Bob could do that and we wouldn't have to wait on a company to come out to install a furnace, they are booked solid due to the low temperatures. The house is so well insulated the gas fire place should heat the whole house and if not we'll just get another or install a furnace. With the decision made the next hurdle was finding one, they've been on sale a couple of weeks therefore the inventory is low, so today around and around we went gathering up the mantle, insert and materials needed to install same. Not one place had them all. It was too late once we got back home and took care of the critters to install the gas fireplace so I'll probably be like Scrooge and sleep with a stocking cap on my head. lol lol (being silly). I'm so hot natured we haven't even bothered to put the mattress heater or a heating blanket on the bed. I'll snuggle up to Bob and keep him warm. He swears along about 1 AM I kick all the covers off and tell him to turn over the other way cause I'm too hot. I've never liked a heater on in a car for more than to thaw us out, once we're up to about 50F I'm ready for it to be turned off and I never have worn a full length coat unless the temperature was 25F or below. lol lol People ask if one or more of the Bullies sleep with us ... they did until one night Bob woke up and said what was that noise. I told him it was me hitting the floor, Pearl decided to stretch her legs out and in the process knocked me off the bed ... 3 grown Bullies in a full size bed was too much and that is when I said "no more dogs in the bed period!!". Tonight may be the exception to my rule. I wonder what BTU of heat a Bully generates. Crazy as today was we managed to laugh although we had to keep reminding ourselves that everything will work or we'll just handle it if it doesn't. Take care. - Judy PS Boomer hid tonight so he wouldn't have to "go up" in a crate next to Dumpy. Like a fool I hunted him down, picked up the limp lump he becomes when he's being silly and reassured him all would be well in his cozy den. "12 F Here" Thursday - January 15, 2009 8:30 AM I was all snug in the bed sleeping when Li'l Cookie started barking out she had "to go". Bob wasn't in bed therefore he must be taking care of puppies and unable to turn loose to take her out. I pulled on some "fleece", boy is it warm, and descended the stairs half- asleep. From the expression on her face Li'l Cookie was wanting to get this over and get back in the house. lol lol Of course when one goes out they all want to go.
I made coffee and grits in between changing out bedding, feeding cats, letting the "strays
that came to stay" out of their dens, etc. Boomer was all snug in his crate last night and
when Bob went out to close them up for the night, Dumpy darted into the crate with him. Since
they groom each other and are the best of friends, Bob popped the latch and pulled down the covers
.... Goodness Gracious there was a low growl then they started fighting. It was all he could do
to open the crate and tilt it to dump them out. They continued their vicious fight out into the yard.
By this time I was trying to help but neither of us had on gloves and there was a good chance
one of them would accidently bite one of us. I picked up a light weight, long skinny box destined
for the trash and tossed it at them. It didn't work. they were still fighting as if trying to
kill each other. My whistle was inside and there was no time to get it. The outside water was cut off
to prevent it from freezing or one spray would have parted them in a hurry. Finally, I thought to bellow
out "NO". It came from my toes and by the time it got out of my mouth, it even scared me. Dumpy
ran back into the crate, but Boomer our whiner was acting like he was really hurt. It's his normal
act if another dog growls at him or if some stranger bends to pick him up. Just in case he was wounded
I picked him up, loved on him and looked for wounds. By this time my adrenalin is going back to a normal
level but I was still shaking. I told you the above to say, just like humans, dogs have disagreements. They settle them by growling, barking and biting each other. Pick your pets wisely, about the same size and temperament, but above all do not allow them to show aggressive behavior, nip it in the bud. If your pets are quarrelsome keep them apart unless you can supervise, etc. Think about it, these are some of the same rules you would implement with children being with each other. I'm off to cook some more of this 30 pounds of chicken leg and quarters I bought the critters the other night. I have to stop spoiling them. - Judy "Big Chill Coming" Wednesday - January 14, 2009 11:00 AM It took some doing but I found the silver lining to this cloud ... there will be no clouds!! It's suppose to be dry and cold. I'm here to tell you that beats the heck out of wet and cold. Wet would down power lines, ice over roadways and cause a lot of damage. So dry is definitely the silver lining. - Judy "Murphy's Law" Tuesday - January 13, 2009 6:00 AM I kindly asked Murphy if he would go visit someone else and reminded him to take his "law" ( or curse), "everything that can go wrong will". lol lol Buzzing around working hard, we had forgotten to check the level on the Propane Tank but it got right chilly last night and then I tried to cook grits, no fire on the stove. We had requested to be on the gas company's 30 day Top Off schedule but I reckon we live so far away from their regular route that we kept getting overlooked. When we called this morning they promised to get to us as soon as they could which is the best we could hope for since I'm sure they are flooded with calls because Wednesday's forecast is a high of 25F with a low of low of 4F .... woo doggie!!! We haven't seen temps that low for awhile. If it comes to pass I bet it will set some records for this area. The gas company arrived around 1 PM and afterward we hurriedly got ready to make a run to the "big city" about 30 miles down the highway to get more chicken legs and thigs for the critters, plus a few other things. We got back home after dark and I reminded Bob to light the pilot on the heater ... you guessed it, it will light but won't hold a flame. The commercial stove in the kitchen holds a good flame and that is what we're using to keep the chill knocked off the grown dogs. Ruckus and Strawberry's litter have the additional warmth of a Doggie heating pad beneath their pools. I hate an open flame so I put a big roasting pan full of water on the eye. My physics may not be right but it just seems to me that the pot of water makes it warmer. We pulled out a small electric heater I used for my plants and are using it up here in the bedroom to keep us warm. Drummer Boy is in a container, with "Snuggle Safe" discs, next to Bob's side of the bed. Bob found the instructions to the Brother sewing machine online, only problem is the printer is out of ink and we couldn't locate any in Corinth, MS. One of us will have to go to Tupelo, MS or order online. lol lol I think everyone knows a "seamstress" who has piles of material they've bought but never used. I swore I would never be one of them ... famous last words!! I asked the ladies at the notions counter if they knew anyone who collected material to sew one day and they acknowledged they did. I asked them very politely not to sell me the material, bolts of which Bob was holding. They asked if I had lots of material at home and I told them, "NO, this will be my first plunge". They were delighted to have another person to join their ranks and were trying their utmost to find more material on sale that I might want. I bought material for $.75 - $1.00 a yard which will make great Christmas decorations ... oops I gave up the habit, I haven't decorated for Christmas in years. lol lol If I start collecting empty tinfoil pie plates and storing rolls of toilet paper under the bed, someone please have me committed. lol Seems like we should be grouchy but we're able to laugh, after all we did it to ourselves! - Judy "English Bulldog Puppy Pictures" Tuesday - January 13, 2009 6:00 AM Mercy, some man called at 5:33 AM, he had the wrong number or he was calling to see if we were at home. English Bulldogs are the #1 Stolen Dogs in the USA and two breeders in our area have, in the past, had whole litters stolen. I decided to stay up after answering the telephone since the weather for our area is forcasted to be extremely cold so we have only today to prepare, therefore today will be one busy day. Meanwhile here are pictures of the puppies to make you smile. - Judy
