Puppy Gal Welcomes You To

Judy's Journal....

I started this feature for friends and family to answer their "What's going on?" emails, therefore, I probably tell too much, but you are welcome to laugh, cry and sigh with us.

I've been in bed most of the day because I was up a good part of the night, but accomplished a good bit later this afternoon.

I cooked chili for supper (left over pinto beans I had in the freezer, plus ground chuck and seasonings ... salt, pepper, lots of chili powder, 1/4 packet of taco seasoning ... easy ) and then I cooked a simple meatloaf to eat later (ground chuck, onions, tad of garlic, seasoning salt, pepper, 3 eggs, a small can of tomato sauce, a regular can of diced tomatoes which I mash by hand, 8 or so crushed crackers, 3 eggs, stir well, put in glass dish, coated the top with ketchup, baked for 1 hr 15 min at 425F, or until brown on top and beginning to get brown on the sides ... but not dried out). We're up and down with the puppies all night so it's a good snack. We both like meatloaf sandwiches.

A friend asked me what seeds I was going to start in the house in February to plant out in the Spring. This was my reply ... I'm not starting any stinking seeds, I'm not buying anymore stinking plants, I'm not posting stinking pictures of my plamts ... I am not, I am not ... I just have to keep telling myself. (I spent $102 for lily bulbs now I'm trying to reform.)

The bulbs are to arrive early March but I have no idea where I'm going to plant them. The deer ate my daylilies and Bob's roses down to the point that I doubt they will come back out that is my excuse for ordering the lilies ... then it dawned on me that I had probably just bought deer food.

Don't tell anyone (lol lol) ... but when I have fever, it's like being drunk for other folks. One time I got on eBay and bid .. oops it was a "dutch auction" whatever that is but I got the whole lot of seeds, no other bidders. BigDaddy is the one who paid the invoice, he said honey just how many of those seeds did you want. lol lol Another time, 103F temp and I had so much fun on eBay, made seriously low bids on all these auctions where there had been no previous bids, just thought I would kick start them for the fellow ... and won every one of them. We laughed when the boxed started being delivered and I told him to change my eBay password so the next time I hit 103F I wouldn't be able to sign on ... well I found I could do Co-op Buying on this other website with 103F and they don't even ask if you have fever.

Now isn't that a cute story ... unfortunately it is true. The good news is I haven't hit 103F in a couple of weeks now. Regardless of what life throws at us, BigDaddy and I have fun.

I hope this makes you laugh!!! I really wanted to close out January with laughter. - Judy

Up with puppies ... it's sleeting. I sure hope for an improvement in weather before it's time for the critters to go out to potty, around 6 AM.

Eve & Jazzman's Puppies Born 1/26/2008
Pictures of the girls.

Lordy, I'm so grouchy that I had to apologize to Bob. At the same time I had to elicit an apology from him for being obstinate. Grouchy and obstinate do not go well together. lol lol

My back is really hurting me and I couldn't figure out why ... well duh then I read my entry for Tuesday when I told you all about diving for Eve to keep her from stepping on one of her puppies when she was in her protective mode. I'm so relieved because now I know I just strained my back and will recover in a few days. I can't take anti-inflammatory drugs so I take 2 tablespoons of wine for pain, this was a 3 tablespooner!!! I've got to remember to take olive oil instead and see if it won't work better.

I'll try to take pictures of the male puppies this afternoon. - Judy

High Wind Warning in effect until 8 PM CST this evening...

Rest of Tonight
Windy. Much colder. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms early in the evening. Mostly clear. Lows in the lower 20s. West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to near 55 mph decreasing to 15 to 20 mph and gusty after midnight.

It's over, I will survey the damage tomorrow. A couple of times I thought it was going to blow the windows out of the house. We were inside and could feel the affects , a slight movement of the house ... which was build to withstand hurricane tail winds. - Judy

This puppy situation gave me a run for my money yesterday. We can tell that Eve is pregnant at an early stage because she gets "growly" toward dogs that are bigger than her, if they get in her space or near her food!!! Yesterday afternoon, I had the puppies with her in the pool nursing, Bob was outside working and had Melanie with him, he brought some dog sheets in to dry and "all thunder" broke loose. Eve saw Melanie pacing the back porch wanting to be with her BigDaddy. Eve started growling and getting up from her babies. (We have to really watch the mothers because in the process of getting up they can step on one of the babies.) I'm close, so I dove for her holding her down and yelling for Bob to come help me. She normally weights 55 lbs but when we took her in for the c-section she weighed 78, too big and strong for me to handle. He got there, held her still while I took the puppies away, one by one stretching to put them in their bed ... this morning my everything hurts. lol lol

Pictues of Sampson, grown son of Eve & Jazzman, with Konnor & Kendal. Sampson thinks Kendal is "his baby". lol lol

Mother Jessica wrote:
And in regards to young children - we actually have an addition to our family. We had our second child last May - Kendal Grace and those are the pictures I will send. As Sampson just loves her so much. He sits by her swing, her highchair (in hopes of her dropping food) and is right beside her now that she is crawling. I swear he treats her as his own. She loves hanging on to him and his dog tags.

The puppies are doing great, nursing well and are chunky little things. One of them started crying which prompted a response from Cherry Cookie of, I'll "wick" it and make it stop. I couldn't help myself, I picked it up and let her lick it. It did stop crying but it was because I was holding it. Then I let some of the other Bullies give it a kiss, but had to stop ... orders from Eve. She looked at me real sharp and let out one bark, like she was saying "what do you think you are doing". lol lol I gave her a piece of turkey for not objecting too badly.

I'm off to make Italian Salad, just like Olive Garden Restaurant serves, and fry up some fritters, my body needs some grease. I've already made a thick Baked Potato Soup this morning so I might take part of that, add a little flour and onion to make fried potato pancakes. - Judy

Sunday - January 27, 2008 4:00 AM
Up with the "babies" ... I hadn't told anyone that the pups were on the way but couldn't resist posting their pictures yesterday afternoon which might prove to be a big mistake. I've already had a loony woman calling wanting one .. I told her I didn't place my "babies" in homes with small children or small pets because they are playful chunks of lead as puppies and could accidently hurt small children or pets like a Pom or Chihuahua. She told me I wasn't a reputable breeder because I told her that ... I hung up on her. (OK I'll admit, my last comment to her was rather crude.) Any time I tell people I can't place a puppy with them, they act crazy ... cry, scream, cuss or threaten to sue. This only proves to me that my decision was RIGHT!!! After I got off the phone, I told Bob I hoped she found the English Bulldog of her dreams and she found out what I was trying to tell her was true.

I've gotten two emails from people who already have one of my "babies" advising me that they were interested in a pup from the new litter. They will be given preferentially treatment, but I'm not going to let people pick their pup or set a price for these pups until they are 2 weeks or so old, because the first two weeks are critial ... should the pup not survive, we want only our hearts to be broken, not the potential new puppy owners.

I'm on my way back to bed. - Judy

Here is a link to their other litter of puppies born in 2006

This is what Beth had to say about Rudy, a.k.a One-Eyed Jack, whom she adopted.

Can't believe Rudy was ever that small. He is short but VERY stocky with BROAD shoulders. He can be fiesty too with a little attitude at times. But, he knows I am the boss and he obeys and respects me. He tries to keep the others in line when they let him or aren't on his blind side!!! LOL!!! Hugs, Beth

SURPRISE!!!

We have newly born puppies!!

We just got back from the vet's where Eve had a litter of 6 puppies, 3 males and 3 females, mostly white but NO solid white. They are so beautiful, robust and were ready to nurse as soon as they were revived. Got to run. - Judy

For me life is to be lived so that my conscious is clear. Why??? Because that is what facilitates me being happy. I try my best to interact with others based upon the principal of treating them how I would want to be treated. Unfortunately, people do take advantage and it's hard to stand tough in those times, but thankfully those times are not often, so I quickly severe ties that bind and move on. I haven't had to do this in a very long time.

A couple of years ago I decided it was time to end a friendship of 38 years ... I know you are asking yourself how could I do this. Well, the person was coming to visit and all my feelings were negative, actually rather depressing. She's all about money, there is a constant flow of questions from her, just being too nosey about my life and she is constantly telling me how much she makes, how much our mutual friends make, any and every topic turns into how so and so could out perform me in whatever situation ... mowing the yard, cleaning house, building a flower bed ... small areas of life that really we're worth discussing, much less a reason to leave me so deflated. Finally, I realized the same person who had looked over my shoulder to see my checking account balance when I wrote a check as a young adult, might profess to be my friend but they did their utmost to destroy my self esteem.

My life, my values and my happiness were beyond her scope, therefore there was no place in my world for her. Friends should make us feel good about ourselves and them, if we don't feel that way then they are not our friends ... no matter how long we have known them. - Judy

I've been up and working hard since 5 AM!!! It doesn't seem like I can get well, but I'm determined so I'll move forward!!

My temperature stays at 100F and then at night goes up to 101F. Today I thought, I've tried staying in bed and that hasn't worked so I'm just going to get up and piddle around in the house trying to get some things accomplished. I cooked a Quiche, a Mincemeat pie (added a can of Apple Pie mix to it to make it better) and with the leftover filling I made a loaf cake using a Pecan Flavored cake mix. I had made a peach cobbler day before yesterday which Bob finished off for breakfast this morning and two days before that I made a large bread pudding which he ate in 24 hours. Lord have mercy .... I haven't had a taste for anything BUT the Quiche I made today. I've been snorting and gargling salt water today so it might have helped with the "tasting" of food. I've washed all the dirty dishes, completed two loads of "dog beds" (washing and drying), fed the "in house" dogs (8) soaked food with turkey gravy, fed cats (well they came running when they heard me open a can) those babies sure have good hearing, and I fed the "strays that came to stay", plus watered 20 or so plants. So in all I was fairly productive and as a result have a better outlook.

I haven't been out of the house in so long I'm getting "stir crazy", but I just have not felt like doing anything or going anywhere. I don't want to even look at my emails, talk on the telephone or see anyone ... it's the fever, does it every time.

So last night I found this "Take command of today and make out of it what you want!!!" in an old Judy's Journal and I feel better after following my own advice. - Judy

Happy Belated January 16 Birthday !!!
To Bronson, Peanut, Sugar & Clyde!!!!!

Shame on me I haven't been keeping up with anything the way I should. All the above pictures were taken in 2003 so they are really out-of-date.

Bronson is now 13 years old, while our "Cookie" English Bulldogs Peanut, Sugar & Clyde are celebrating their 5th birthday.

I think I've been listening and reading to too much political news, my poor brain feels like it has been stirred. Some of the candidates are not answering the questions they are asked ... they reply by asking a question instead or they go off in a different direction from the question altogether. I like a person who will look the camera in the eye and give a direct response to a question. I certainly have less respect for a candidate who cries, talks about crying or tears up during the campaign because some people use tears to get sympathy, as diversionary tactic or it could be the person is too emotional to be President of The United States of America. I recall the news stories about the LA Governor who cried instead of making critical decisions during Katrina, also I worked with juvenile delinquents as a volunteer for too long to respect tearful emotions during a campaign. Emotions get in the way of communication and prevent clear thinking. I forgot to tell you I'm an Independent and I've just not felt comfortable enough with any of the candidates to settle on one, but I have ruled out several. I suppose it doesn't help that I'm in the midst of reading "The Brethren" by John Grisham lol lol

We're just trying to stay warm and keep the critters happy, until this cold snap breaks. We're all getting cabin fever, so I need to think of some way to entertain them in a quiet way, they are getting too noisy, wanting to go out to play but quickly change their mind once outside. I wish I had a freezer full of beef femur bones, that would at least keep them busy for a day or so.

I think I'll go cook them some stew to pour over their food and cook Bob & I BBQ back ribs. Stay warm, don't let your pipes freeze or your heart grow cold. - Judy

It's been cold here and as most of you know, Bullies don't fare well in either temperature extreme. They have spent very little time outside lately which they are really missing. Bob and I are missing the down-time also. It's nice to be able to take them to the covered outside runs for a few hour, to give us all a break. Kind of like taking your children to "grandmother's" for the day, or a mini Mother's Day out. lol lol We're all getting a little on the grouchy side.

The forecast for today is a high temperature of 33°F and a low of 12°F tonight. That means that even the "strays that came to stay" will have to be put up for the night. On the back porch they have a giant covered crate with a doggie heating pad, maximum 72°F, at one end, but it won't do any good unless the crate is fully covered so I'll have to catch them, they won't come to Bob for some reason, put them in the crate, latch the door and cover loosely with old comforters.

Here's a funny for you ... years ago a friend told me they gave their Bully green beans as a treat. I had opend a can and Chet our first male Bully was standing by in case anything hit the floor. I dropped a grean bean into his mouth and much to my surprise I learned English Bulldogs can spit!! He spit, foamed at the mouth and looked at me like I had tried to poison him. He wouldn't take any offered tidbits for 3 days. Poor Chet, I wouldn't have done that on purpose for the world ... but it surely was funny after the fact.

I'm off to cook a pot of soup for lunch. - Judy

Wednesday - January 16, 2008 5:30 PM
Did you know that the majority of English Bulldogs like cooked cabbage?? Or maybe they just act like they do because I've cooked it. Li'l Cookie is our anything green girl, asparagus and cabbage being her top two. Eve did her growly talkin', hard stares and butt wigglin' for cabbage late this afternoon which set off Sweetie Pie and Li'l Cookie, all of which were in the kitchen with me. I didn't give them a bowl full like they wanted but I did give them a couple hunks each, as treats. Bob had come into the house for a late lunch and was totally enjoying the corned beef and cabbage. When I started giving out samples to the Bullies he gave me an "Eve Stare". lol lol

A Few Words About - Puppies Biting Your Hands
Never, ever let a puppy do at 8 pounds, what you don't want them doing at 50 pounds!
Your Voice Is Your Best Training Tool!

Biting is a normal reaction of a puppy, they are either trying to nurse on your fingers or they are interacting with you the way they do their siblings. Either way you have to establish a master dog relationship quickly.

If the pup was taken away from their mother too early, could be they will transfer over to a pacifier instead of your hands. The bite would be a "bitey sucky" type. If so, every time they start to bite your finger, put the pacifier in their mouth.

If that does not work, catch their bottom jaw between your thumb and forefinger, hold it still and say a good loud "no", if they continues do it again but hold more firmly and get louder and deeper with the "no", if they still continues press harder and maybe giggle the lower jaw just a tad to let them know it is the mouth/biting that is getting them into trouble. Don't use a high voice use a low, loud determined voice. The more stubborn they are the more determined you will have to be to win.

Also, your interaction with the pup could be causing the problem. I've had puppies that had never bitten my hands start biting the new owners immediately because they were using their hands to get the pups attention ... waving their hand or wiggling a finger, pawing at the pup like they were another dog would etc.

Once I bought a 10 week old Bully pup from a couple who were getting a divorce. They told me it would bite their hands so hard it would bring blood. I did the above "holding it's lower jaw" until it got the message and it never did it again.

Monday - January 14, 2008 2:00 PM
Good Afternoon!! My critters are impossibly spoiled. When I went downstairs this morning, the strays "that came to stay" gathered at the back door and looked in at me in a mournful way, which normally means they are out of food .. taking an extra large pan of food out to them, I stopped in my tracks because their dishpan had plenty of food in it. Then they started dancing around on their back legs, a clear sign they were ready for some "good stuff". The two cats are trying to wrap themselves around my ankles to the point I could barely move. Inside Eve started "talking and wiggling her butt", Delta Dawn stuck right by my side, pushing Li'l Cookie back. Oh My, they all are wanting "good stuff". They think and rightly so, says Bob, that I always have "good stuff" that I can feed them. Laughing Bob said he would get me a turkey and a couple of pork liver from the freezer, meanwhile I started searching in the refrigerator for leftovers .. they need a bite or two of something to hold them over. lol lol

I've been awake since 5 AM doing research online. There is no way I can express how frustrating it is to be sick so often. If it were not for my high temperature I would be tempted to think I was crazy. It dawned upon me that my first effort upon getting better has always been to cook ... giant size professional gas range with 5 propane gas burners and 2 ovens, one confection and one a normal size electric. I think it is the combustion from the propane gas to which I am allergic!!!! The doctor said what I have is probably Allergy Induced Chronic Bronchitis which can cause damage to the heart. Once I start cooking, I am a cooking fool, besides the meal I'm making, I'll put on a pot of something for the "critters" normally chicken or roast which cooks for a long time or I'll cook a pot of pasta for a pasta salad, pot of beans, peas, etc. I love the aroma of country cooking!!! This is all well and good, until we close up the house for the winter, then the combustion gases are trapped within the house and that is when I start getting sick.

To test my theory, the last in a long line, we're not going to use the gas burners, only the electric oven, electric skillet, crock pot, etc. and see if I get sick. The next test would be to "be a cooking fool" with at least 3 of the 5 burners going like I usually do.

It may sound silly to you but I'm so excited ... just maybe I've found what causes me to get so very sick. At times Bob has really gotten upset with me because I wouldn't go to ER in the middle of the night, that is how sick I've gotten ... just maybe all of this will be behind us and we can move forward ... more plants, more critters and more joy in our life. On second thought, no more plants or critters, but lots more joy!! I am one lucky lady to have Bob in my life. - Judy

To all of you who have send emails of concern or greeting cards, I Thank You!!

Just as soon as I'm well .... how many times have I said that!! lol lol I still have my sense of humor and smile, but I've lost my "chipmunk cheeks" so that's a blessing.

I brought all of the waiting emails into my computer and now have 158 in my Inbox. That count was after I deleted all duplicates, spams, scams, forwards, greeting card, etc. After doing all of that, I'm too tired to tackle answering any of them and the sheer number is depressing. Most will probably be questions, the answers to which are located on the front page of my website. I'm going to delete those and not bother to respond. I deleted two from a person I do not know with the subject of "Telephone # ???". Is it easier to send me 2 emails, than it is to process a search using their browser "find on this page" function, or to scan the front page to find it? Weird, but there are a lot of strange people in the world and I get my share of emails and calls from them.

It's time to eliminate irritants and to that end, I've gotten rid of 90% of my tropical plants. I loved those big blooms on my Brugmansia (Angel's Trumpets), but caring for them has taken too much effort. All new plants will have to be perennials, able to live outside during the winter, or annuals, just grown for one season.

Angel's Trumpets (Brugmansia)

Have you been so distressed over a child or husband being late, that you wanted to hug their neck and then give them a good "yellin' at" for causing you so much worry? That is exactly how Li'l Cookie acted toward me yesterday. I wish Bob had caught it on video, but we never expected her to react in that manner. I suppose they all thought I had deserted them. That makes me feel so bad.

I cooked breakfast this morning, the effort caused my temperature to climb to 100.2F so I'm about to curl up with a good book. - Judy

Friday - January 11, 2008 2:30 PM
I'm alive, not totally well, but much better than I have been. I have the worse case of Bronchitis ever which caused us to miss Christmas and New Year's all together. My temperature would spike up to 103F if I attemped to do ANYTHING physical, antibiotics had me commode hugging and aspirin caused other complications so they were only taken when it spiked and I couldn't get it down any other way. I've had no appetite, frequent coughing, labored breathing, bad headaches, terrible earaches, swollen glands, shaking, chills, chattering teeth, sweating, rapid pulse rate and of course unable to sleep with all that happening. The lack of sleep caused me to be extremely fatigued, mentally confused and grouchy.

When I was finally able to go downstairs yesterday morning, bedlam broke out because they hadn't seen me in so long. They forgot their manners totally ... barked, whinned and "talked" at me ... all at the same time "Me First Mama, Me First Mama" Hope jumped up on me which she knows better than to do and almost knocked me over, Bob had to come to my rescue. Li'l Cookie, Cherry Cookie and Hope wet all over the floor they were so excited and I thought Melanie was going to tear the house down, she's such a BIG girl. I quickly got on the opposite side of the kiddy gate, and then retreated back upstairs. I wasn't as "well" as I thought.

More later ..... Judy

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 55 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone content that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love, dogs....smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
