English Bulldog Training Question & Answer > From: "stephenie" Sent: Monday, January 29, 2007 3:24 PM Question...I am stumped...my son's bulldog is 9 months. He gets exercused 2 times a day for at least 30 minutes each...on returning home...instead of being tired and resting...he goes nuts...is he being over stimulated by walking???? HELP!!! Thanks. From: Judy Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 10:05 AM Subject: Re: Walking Causing Bully To Be Hyper?? Stephenie, I don't know how to respond to you because I can't see what you are talking about, but my guess is that it isn't the walking as such but the stimulation (playing, being harassed by humans or other animals, etc) that is causing the problem. I'm assuming your son is doing the walking, so be a sneaky mother and catch them unaware on their walk so you can tell if unsuitable behavior is taking place.- Judy I was working on the assumption that her son lived at home From: "Stephenie" Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 10:41 AM Subject: RE: Walking Causing Bully To Be Hyper Thanks for your quick reply. I have babysat their dog for over a week and have first hand experience as to what happens. He will start out very calm sniffing and staying with me. We may meet someone we may not...but as we get about a block from the house he will start grabbing the leash and running ahead. I have corrected him and been firm having him heal and shortening up on the lead. But he is still driving ahead and twirling... When we get in the house he will get water then he starts jumping at me or tearing around the table... he gets a time out... I have raised, obedience trained and shown dogs all my life...I am stumped. I know that bulldogs can be bullheaded but this almost bipolar.... Thanks for your input... Stephenie From: "Judy" Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 1:14 PM Stephenie, Does the dog act the same way with your son? I would think the behavior is a learned behavior and it's difficult to "unlearn" them. Maybe carry a treat in your pocket to distract Sasquatch at the point he normally gets rowdy. The key, as I'm sure you already know, is to find out what produced the behavior and figure out how to offset it. Ask your son if at a point in time had the bully been 1) given a treat for going out to potty or even playtime afterward as a reward. If so he is remembering that "time" and gets excited. Also, Bullies are strange in that they love laughter and will repeatedly perform the behavior that produced laughter (or a squeal) from a human. I caution people all the time to cover their mouth and choke back the laughter, if their Bully does something that is not acceptable behavior but is also really funny. 2) Maybe when your son, or whomever walked him, turned him loose at the end of the drive so he could run the rest of the way to the house. 3) Just had a thought ... food. If he is use to getting food after the walk, it could produce this type of behavior. Also a hungry Bully will act like a fool. I suggest you eliminate that as a possible but feeding all he will eat twice daily. Actually at 9 months, my guys are still packing away the food, about 10 cups (5 in the morning and 5 in the evening) of my "Growing Bully Food" which is puppy formulated dry kibble soaked with water, to eliminate gas, with chicken or turkey gravy poured over the top. From: "jill and the gang" Sent: Saturday, January 20, 2007 12:23 PM Dear Judy and Bob, I have some really bad news.....last nite we lost gypsy. She was having a time with breathing and so I took her to Jeremy (my brother-in-law\vet). i thought she was having something like an asthma attack. We got to the vet clinic and "J" put her on the table and her heart just stopped. I was there and Drake was there with her loving on her and petting her the whole time.. we intubated and gave her oxygen and did cpr but to no luck... "J" opened her up while we were at the monster truck show and called me with a few results.. her organs are being sent to the lab in Hopkinsville, KY for study to determine what caused this to happen... He said that the heart was great and the right lung was great but couldnt find the left lung.. in that position was just black mush attached to the chest wall. He said that she must have been suffering with it for a LONG time. I told him that until yesterday she was fine.. NO PROBLEMS and she came through the spay surgery like a pro. (Laser surgery)He thinks it may just be a congenital defect but could be bacterial so I have mac and peaches on a 7 day round of wide spectrum antibiotics. He said she was compensating fine with one lung but yesterday her gums were white and i knew (being a nurse) that she wasnt circulating blood properly. He agreed. We didnt even have time to draw blood before her passing. It was so quick I was shocked...She was the quiet behind the scenes kind of dog. but OH SO FAITHFUL!! she was at my side the entire time I was home. she didnt budge from it. I think she felt like we were attached at the hip sometimes. I havent stopped crying yet. the whole monster truck show is blurr... Drake enjoyed it but I was in the lobby talking to J and crying the entire time. I just keep wondering if there was something that i missed or something I could have noticed earlier. I just dont know..... Im sorry if I have made your day sadder but I just wanted you all to know.... we buried her today under the apple tree. I cant even stand to look at her kennel, toys or blankie.. It just gets me started again.....I get way too attached but i feel like i just lost one of my children... I hope you got my card with the pictures in it. Love jill and the gang-minus one dear friend Monday - 01/29/2007 1:00 PM If you are a praying person, please say one for my friend Stacie's Boxer who has sustained her and her son through some really hard times. He needs a miracle!!! From: Stacie Sent: Monday, January 29, 2007 10:32 AM Subject: Sampson update Good Morning- We had a bad day on Friday- Sampson actually growled, barked and snapped at me. He let me pet him when I first got up- he was asleep on his spot on the couch-as usual- I went about my business of getting ready- then started to try to get him to get up and go outside. I was trying to encourage him to go out. The last time he went out was 12:00 AM. Our normal morning routine- prior to his illness was that he went out as soon as my alarm went off- then again before I left for work. He then would go to his box- where he stayed while we were gone.( he seems to have a separation anxiety thing( real nervous and pacing and panting and has always been a "crate" dog while we are away.) Friday morning I started out talking nicely- the cajoling- the begging- Made him some new food took it to him and tried to get him to follow me. Tempted him with ham and cheese. He would just look at me. After almost 1 hour of going in and begging him ( I had to get to work)- then I began to get stern- he was not happy. I went to nudge the sofa cushion he was on -hoping that would get him going and he bark, growled and snapped at me. I fell apart-as he has NEVER done anything like that before! After a few minutes-after I had composed myself- I went back in and got down on my knees-and he let me pet his head. But when I became stern with him again he started growling. Something was definitely wrong. I would have just left him, but Chase was off from school that day- and still asleep- and his aggression scared me -that Sampson might do something to Chase. I FINALLY got him to get up after saying that the "grandmudder "-my mother( one of his favorites) was coming. He got up and was very stiff in his hind quarters and moving slow. -so I determined he is in pain. He did go outside to urinate. And came back in- he took less than 1/2 oz of water- did not touch his food. He only ate maybe 1/4 cup of food yesterday. Then he got in his box. He did let me pet him before I closed the door. I left a note on Sampson's box for Chase to call me and not to mess with him when he gets up. We are 4 days out of the lysodren loading- no meds given since then- so didn't think it was a meds issue -I was just so upset. He has never acted like that and I CAN'T do that every morning, and more importantly- I can't be afraid of him- for me or for Chase. I came on in to work-(late-so that was not good) called the vet and they said to get him in ASAP- so back to the house to get him. Sampson got in the car OK ( not happily- but he showed no aggression) but I could not get him out of the car at the vet. His favorite vet tech even came out- to help and he would not go with both of us "encouraging" him- he was growling and snapping at us by then. I was in tears as they had to muzzle him and then lift him out of the car. He was almost completely "stowed" up when they set him down- so they carried him in. When we went by the vet on the way to the exam room I heard the vet question "Why is there a muzzle on that dog- he doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body!-something has to be wrong!"- so as upset as I was- I felt better knowing that SHE knew that he wouldn't act like that without reason. After examining him she really felt like there was nothing going on neurologically- and took him for x-rays. Sampson has "SERVER ARTHRITIS"! Has probably had this for years but the other disease ( which she thinks was around for awhile- just not showing any of the severe symptoms was masking the arthritis.) The tumor on his adrenal gland was causing the adrenal to produce too much coritsol which was poisoning his organs- but was helping the arthritis! I was able to see the problems clearly on the x-rays. He has arthritis going up into his back along his spine and down into his hips- especially severe in his left hip. She thinks also that there is a severe arthritis where his pelvis joins his backbone-and showed me that this was where all the nerves came down into his back. She thinks that Friday AM when I nudged the sofa cushion that it pinched those nerves- causing him severe pain causing him to growl/bark and snap at me. She does not think that it is degenerative arthritis- and thinks he has a chance to feel better with meds. She has prescribed Previcox( more $$$$ meds- 2.70 per day- but how can you say no when this might give them a chance)-once a day and says we should see some significant changes in 48-72 hours. I was able to get him home and back out of the car again. He has lost 2 more pounds since Monday- so that is another concern- but we think it is from him being in pain. I had a hard time getting him to take the meds-however he did not growl at me- reassuring me that maybe we are dealing with a "hind quarter" issue. The vet asked me to hold the lysodren (since I had said that I was planning on giving it on Saturday)- to give him a chance to feel better (and make sure if he where to have any side effects from the new meds I would know.) Sampson rested all weekend- but he is not eating and is hardly drinking any at all! He does seem to be feeling better and is moving better- he stretches in a really weird way when he first gets up, but does move alone- however very slowly. He looks at me with those big ole eyes and it breaks my heart. He would eat (very little- and I kept giving him fresh food about every 4 hours trying to get him to eat- there is no way that he is getting enough calories to sustain him. He refuses almost everything now- hamburger meat- sausage- chicken- mash potatoes and gravy. I started measuring his water intake again on Sunday as I knew he wasn't drinking near enough-I just didn't realize how little he IS drinking!!! he only took 2 ozs. in a 24 hour period. I dropped a "goody" basket off today at the vet and reported the new info and asked them to call me.( no call as of yet) I was supposed to give him the lysodren today- but don't have the heart to do that to him. I am afraid that he is still struggling and I want to make his last days as comfortable as I can- and I KNOW that stuff makes him feel AWFUL!! I have not given up hope!!! ( you know-me I don't seem to know when to give up on ANYTHING!!!) He was resting comfortably this AM- and did eat a few bites for me before work. I am putting water in with his canned dry food- so he is getting a little fluid there. Sorry to be so lengthy- just wanted to give you all the details- I know you don't have time to reply-and don't have a magic wand to "fix" things- but I would appreciate your prayers. I just wish I knew when enough was enough. I don't want to keep him here just to make me feel better- if there is no hope- even though just thinking about having to "help" him go on kills me. Please send advice if you can. Thanks for caring! - Stacie

From what you have written it appears Sampson has no quality of life, him snapping at you proves that he is in EXTREME pain. I strongly advise you to release him from his suffering. Hug him up tight at the doctor's office as he crosses over "the rainbow bridge" and he will be waiting for you when it's your time. I know doing this will break your heart and it will take a long time to heal because I had to make the same decision twice in October of last year and my heart still has not healed. Bob left the decision to me because they were my "babies" more so than his, plus I have suffered from pain and illness but he hasn't. We have an English Bulldog, Diesel who will be turning 4 in April. He's our baby and the most wonderful family member in the world! We do have sodor problem and I'd like your suggestion on a good shampoo to use on him. Also, he has a cherry eye that didn't appear until our vet told us that his eyelashes were growing back into his eyes and upon his suggestion we allowed him to perform surgery for this condition. Then the cherry eye appeared. We'd like to have surgery to correct the cherry eye - what's your thoughts on this? One other thing, he frequently scratches his behind and runs around in circles as if it's bothering him. Is there anything other than washing out around his tail when giving him a bath that will help this itching? Thanks for your time! We have an English bulldog named Mabelline. She is our third bulldog (we had Roger, who lived to be about 12; and we now also have Romeo, who is turning three next month). She just turned a year old last weekend. When she was about five months old, over the course of a weekend she lost the ability to walk on her rear legs. It kind of started with a limp, and then it looked like her rear end was "drunk" and all over the place. We took her to a specialty hospital, who initially diagnosed her as having hip dysplasia. But I wasn't buying that diagnosis - it didn't seem to fit because the onset was so sudden in such a young puppy. I had her seen at the same hospital by a neurologist. They performed an MRI with her under sedation. After this neurologist never called me back over the course of the day with the results, I finally kept calling her. She got on the phone with me and told me that Mabelline had five hemivertebrae (deformed vertebrae) in her thoracic spine and that they were pressing on her spinal cord and that there was no surgery that could be performed. She told me that it was a 100% guarantee that by the time she was a year old, she'd be completely paralyzed and that we should put her to sleep. I was stunned. I asked her what the worst case scenario was - she said paralysis. So I asked if she'd be in pain at that point, and she said no, the opposite, she'd probably feel nothing. So I said well, what about getting her a wheelchair, or maybe some physical therapy. She kind of laughed and said therapy was a "waste of money" and that most people wouldn't want to be bothered with a dog in a wheelchair. She actually suggested that she could put Mabelline to sleep now, as she was still sedated from the MRI. I was so mad - I told her to have her ready immediately because I needed to get her out of there. I took her home and decided that I would do anything possible to make her life happy, including taking care of her if she became paralyzed. I ordered her a wheelchair. At that point (this was in early July of 2006), she would lay quietly and would kind of try and drag her rear legs. I tried to keep her crated as much as possible. My regular vet (who has four bulldogs of his own) suggested that she possibly might have injured herself. He said that he had read that 9 out of 10 bulldogs have hemivertebrae, as it is a genetic thing with them, and that more often than not, it doesn't affect them. So he said, rest her and then gradually try and exercise her. I got onto a handicapped pets website and met up with a girl who knew someone whose French bulldog had the same diagnosis as Mabelline, and she had gotten him some physical therapy and he was fine now. After a week or so, Mabelline started to bear weight on her rear legs again, although hesitantly. I took her to a rehab hospital nearby and met a great doctor there. I intended to sign her up for swimming therapy, but she told me that if I had a pool at home, I could do it at home. So I got Mabelline a life jacket and started swimming her in the pool a little at a time. I also did some exercises with her on the yoga ball, helping her to bear weight a little at a time. By the end of September, she was walking almost completely normally. Now, she walks, and RUNS and RUNS and jumps and is completely normal. She is just the cutest bully girl in the entire world (but I guess I am biased!). I read Jeb's story and it reminded me of my Miss Mabelline. I intend to take her back to that original specialty hospital to show her to the neurologist who recommended euthanizing her, to show her that you can't jump to the most drastic thing; she didn't even want to give Mabelline a chance, and now look at her. I will e-mail you a picture of Mabelline and Romeo. Regards, Vanessa ![]() Mabelline (on the left) and Romeo

Sunday - 01/28/2007 1:30 PM I've gotten a couple of emails in regard to the stairs not having a banister: Remember when Bob's Daughter was here and they worked on the stairs?? Bob was trying to impress his daughter with his ability to "figure things out", a natural desire of all parents. When I asked my first tiny question, his response told me he wasn't receptive to questions, so I didn't get involved. The stairs have a design flaw which I'm going to have to figure out how to correct before we can put in the banister. The emails started me to thinking and I believe I know how to solve the problem. I'll mark it out when my brain is more energized and see if it will work. We took off the panels to see if we could tell what was amuck, took pictures of bearings which are molded into the tub. Sent the picture to an online DIYS website and got back a response that it was not a repair job that should be undertaken by a non-professional. We priced the part which was $330, not including shipping or installation. By the time all was said and done we figured it would cost near $600, too much money to put in the washing machine. So yesterday afternoon we went shopping for a new one and decided upon another Whirlpool, total cost was $1100, including delivery and installation, but we are suppose to get a rebate of $100 or so. Our shopping experience was not good since there were several people wanting to purchase or ask questions but the only sales person had taken a break without having anyone to cover his department. I followed behind a ticked off lady to the Customer Service desk up front and pronounced before she had the opportunity to say anything, "Whatever she says goes for me also" Immediately the manager in charge got two people to ring us up, plus 2 more to wait on the other customers. Just so you'll know what kind of "stuff" I'm still working through here are a few pictures of the living room, about half-way as organized as I'll ever be able to get it. I'll post pictures again when it's finished. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thursday - 01/18/2007 1:00 PM Well some wannabe Stalker, messed up the plans I had for yesterday. I was so shocked by their twisted mind that I deleted the email before it was brought into my computer. Later I was ready to kick myself, I should have replied to them. I was hurt and shocked yesterday but this morning, I'm determined. The puppies are doing fine and BigDaddy Bob posted new pictures of the Sugar Babies on the front page of the website. To get there, you can go to the Table of Contents on right side of this page and click on "Home". I'm off to make another attempt at organizing all the kitchen stuff.. I told Bob we couldn't buy groceries again until all the pantry shelves were bare, because they needed to be cleaned and that was the lazy way of doing it. He estimates we could eat well for the next 6 months without going to the grocery store if we didn't need fresh veggies, milk and bread. So we're thinking about limiting our grocery buying to only those items. Sure!! Everyone knows if you go into a grocery store stuff just jumps into the basket. Last time we went Jelly Beans and ice cream jumped into our basket. Before we got to the check out, I lifted the newspaper to reveal my goodies and promptly returned them all to where I got them. It was a fun game at the time. From: "malificent" Belker's Life and Death Sometimes a child can say things much better than an educated adult... A Dog's Purpose - from a 4 year old Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long." Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. Wednesday - 01/17/2007 3:30 PM Looking at myself walking in the mirror downstairs, I commented to BigDaddy Bob, how can a human walk like that. He said by making their legs stiff, to which I said, no look the knees are working finally. lol lol All we can figure is I did so much Sunday that I strained all the muscles from the middle of my back to my toes. Monday I definitely knew I'd over done it, but Tuesday made the Monday soreness seem as if it was nothing. Whew, what a scare not being able to walk properly because the legs had a mind of their own. From now on, I certainly will appreciate the suffering people are going through when they walk odd. Thank The Good Lord, mine is just temporary. I'm much better today. I kept reminding myself, it was like when I was a teenager and went horseback riding, 2nd day was the worse then it got better. I haven't answered emails in the last 2 days, so that is one of my priorities for this afternoon. I hope you stop to smell the roses and smile at those around you today. - Judy The Rose, Sung By Bette Midler Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed Some say love it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed Some say love it is a hunger an endless aching need I say love it is a flower and you it's only seed It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long and you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose Monday - 01/15/2007 3:30 PM I forgot to tell you how my morning began, making coffee. I took the coffee maker basket outside to the compost pile to dump. The cats and "strays that came to stay" were bouncing everywhere wanting to let me know they wanted the Pork Liver they smelled cooking all night. At any rate, Fluffy was jump on the backdoor, scratching the glass Mr. Cat almost tripped me with his "flash across my path" act, Boomer came into the kitchen he was so excited, that's when Sugar got upset, Miss Kitty was scratching on the backdoor casing and that is when I screamed "NO" at all of them. Immediately order was restored, but my head was spinning. I proceed to make the coffee, but instead of all of it going into the glass pot, about half of it was spelling onto the counter. I'm grumbling wondering what in the world was going on, grabbed a towel and started moping up. What coffee went into the pot was so strong I had to match it 1 to 1 with cream. About an hour later, I looked over and saw the coffee maker basket where I had put it when all the critters got under foot. That was when I offered to go back to bed. lol lol It's so good to be able to laugh at life's happenings. Monday - 01/15/2007 1:30 PM Yesterday was my first full day of working. DogGone, I was exhausted by day's end, but mentally I feel so much better today. Worked my CoonDog off, I did. I feel silly so I'm using "Dog Words". lol lol Puppies are doing fine, Sugar got really upset but just being protective of her babies when one of the "strays that came to stay" came into the kitchen from the back porch. It's good thing Bob crated her just as I started going in and out of the house. I felt like I was a total disruption and volunteered to come back upstairs and do nothing. You know he laughed really loud and I'm not stupid, I know he meant "just try". It has been raining here all morning and is suppose to be cloudy all week, plus get colder. Tuesday night it's going down to 19F, so we'll have to snug up. I hope your week goes well and that you are able to deal logically with all that comes your way.- Judy Saturday - 01/13/2007 1:30 PM "Food-filching fat cat reunited with owner" 20-pound tabby taken to shelter after getting stuck in pet door" Look at that face, what is not to love!!! I was exhausted needless to say. Bob worked hard at keeping the critters quiet so I could sleep as long as possible. Petunia's Star has been "reserved" and I'm awaiting a deposit on Angelica, so she's "reserved pending deposit". Right now, and it still too early to tell, it appears Sugar's male puppy may take after Jazzman (55 lbs) and the girls will take after Sugar (37 lbs). BUT that is just a guess on my part. I've cleared out the backlog of emails and currently have zero waiting. That surely is a good feeling. Now I'm switching my priority to cleaning this house. Oh My, what a mess!! If you are a praying person, I would appreciate it if you would say a prayer for my friend Stacie, her son Chase and their Boxer, Sampson. Sam has been diagnosed as having Canine Cushings, a very horrible disease. Stacie is spending mega money, emotions and energy in an attempt to give him back his quality of life. You all have a good weekend and give everyone you love a big hug.- Judy Thursday - 01/11/2007 8:30 AM Bob just finished putting the puppies in with their mother's to feed them. They are so healthy and of course beautiful. Petunia's puppies have their eyes open and and I'm always asking myself how well can they see at this point, but there doesn't seems to be an answer. I'll have to search the Internet to see if I can locate any information on that. Last evening, Bob and I came to an agreement on the price of the puppies, which I've posted to the front page of the website. I'm now going to review the applications I've received and send emails to the people who sent them. We're sleeping at odd times through out the day and night, since the puppies are on a 3 hour feeding schedule. Once awake it is often not easy to go back to sleep. If you have children, think about bringing them home from the hospital and how you felt in regard to lack of sleep for a couple of weeks, that's about what we go through with a litter of puppies. Of course there are snuggles, warm fuzzy feelings and giggles which makes it possible to keep going. We need to go to the grocery for basics but we're so tired neither of us thinks it's a good idea to be driving. Warm fuzzy feelings to all of you. - Judy & Big Daddy (Bob) Wednesday - 01/10/2007 3:30 PM We've been doing chores and planning a new layout for the website. I think it looks too informal, but I get emails all the time from people telling me how much they appreciate the information I've provided, so it must be user friendly. Bob says it looks like a site that was started then additional links were haphazardly added. I told him that's exactly how I did it. My objective was to get the information out to people, not worrying about form. lol lol Meanwhile, Bob cooked this wonderful Quiche as a surprise for me, while I was taking an hour nap. I like Quiche, most any kind, but this has got to be the best I've ever eaten. Salmon Quiche 1 T butter 1/2 c thinly sliced green onions 4 eggs, beaten with a fork 1/2 c half-and-half 3/4 t salt 1/4 t paprika 1/8 t pepper 15 1/2 oz can salmon, drained bones removed, flaked, reserving liquid 6 oz (1 1/2 c( shredded Swiss cheese Prepare pastry for filled one-crust 9 inch pie, or use frozen 9 inch Heat over to 375F. In small skillet, melt butter, saute onions until crisp-tender. In large bowl stir in all other ingredients, except the cheese, be sure to including the salmon liquid and slightly cooled onions. Sprinkle cheese on bottom of pastry-lined pan, pour salmon mixture over the cheese. Bake at 375 F for 45-50 minutes or until knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Tuesday - 01/09/2007 Noon
I've been up and going since a little after 8 AM. When the pups are this young we're up and down
all during the night. Bob is taking care of them because I'm not healed enough to be doing
the squatting and bending over that is necessary. Bless his heart he is really getting
tired and needs to crash for at least 8 hours, but that isn't possible at this point in their development.
Monday - 01/08/2007 5:40 PM From: "Kirk" Sent: Monday, January 08, 2007 5:14 PM Subject: Beau (Mini-E & Smart Cookie's 11/03/04 Litter, brother to Peanut & Sugar) Hi Judy, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope that this year turns out much better for you all. I can't tell you enough how much we love Beau and what he means to our family. He truly is the center of our world right now.
I also wanted to share the attached picture with you. We take Beau to
"doggie day-care" for an afternoon a week just so he can play with other
dogs and not become too sedentary. The day-care brought in a
photographer a couple of weeks before Christmas and took 'class'
pictures. Like fools, we bought the whole package. He is a real handsome
dog and knows when cameras are around - a real ham. He's also a pretty
happy dog, too - I think that you can see that in his face. Take care. - KirkSent: Wednesday, January 03, 2007 1:52 AM Subject: Great to see new puppies! Dear Judy and Bob, We've been thinking about you guys a lot lately, and we were delighted to see that you'd posted a new journal entry...and pictures of new puppies! I'm glad to hear you're doing well after some much-needed downtime. We all need a break from time to time! I particularly wanted to send along this picture of Eula (Sweet Caroline) and our new baby, Aidan. He came on December 20, just in time for Christmas, and Eula was very happy to welcome him home! Mom and baby are doing great. We went through a rough patch with Eula when we arrived at our new home. Even though she'd helped us pick the house out, and came with us to the inspection and closing and a few painting trips before the move, she evidently found the move very stressful. She reacted by becoming increasingly willful, if not aggressive. She tried herding us, she jumped on us, she barked and nipped. We were very nervous to see this behavior. not only because she was growing larger and more powerful but also because the baby was coming. We didn't want a dangerous animal in the house...we needed her under control!
So we hired a local behaviorist to help us train Eula. Greg Smith is a well-known trainer
in our area, a very knowledgable and able. He set us a course of exercises for Eula
designed to bring her back under our control. We worked basic commands like heel, sit,
down, stay, come. We'd read books about puppy training, but there's no real substitute
for a live teacher. Eula responded positively, immediately. She really enjoyed the
training sessions with Greg and even more the practice sessions with Maggie and myself.
Over the course of three months and seven classes, she returned to the calm, sweet puppy
she'd been in Missouri--but now with a real focus and rapport with her owners.
I tell you this story as an introduction to Greg's comments about Eula. He's been
training dogs for 20 years, and he says he's never seen a better bulldog. She has amazing
rapport with people, a real will to please, and a sweet disposition. She's a bit of a
trouble-maker, and she's not above testing the limits even now, but she always recognizes
our limits when we make them known. He said that most of the bulldogs he's trained are
real couch potatoes, dull and listless, while Eula is energetic, atheletic, and just a ton
of fun to be around. He said that after his experience with Eula, he's interested in
getting an English bulldog of his own. He'll be glad to know you're breeding again,
because he said that Eula's qualities are evidence of the excellence of your care in
breeding. I wanted to pass along those compliments along with best wishes for a terrific 2007 from Maggie and myself. Your friends, Pete, Maggie, and Aidan From Judy: Gracious, I would say Eula was more than a bit ticked and was trying her best to make you take her back home. How pitiful!! You did exactly the right thing by calling in a professional trainer. Congratulations to both of you on the birth of your son!!! - Judy & Bob Monday - 01/08/2007 3:20 PM I have 20 emails left to answer. Two of those are from people who have one of our "babies" and the other 18 are applications to be puppy parents. I'm too tired at present to respond to the emails or make decisions on the applications. Maybe later tonight or first thing in the morning. Monday - 01/08/2007 12:00 NOON From: "Millie" Sent: Wednesday, October 04, 2006 1:47 PM Subject: Pebbles (alias "Lou", Carlotta's 05/23/05 Litter) Hi Judy and Bob, Hope all is well. Thought I would send you some newer pictures of Pebbles - she is a wonderful little bulldog. Always has a butt wiggling, happy, thrilled to see you greeting - makes coming home so fun to know she is so happy to see you (even if you just left the room for a few minutes and came back). She still has some issues with strangers though, and have to be careful when introducing her to new people. I need to tell people to ignore her until she decides to approach them, and then still ignore her for a while until she lets them acknowledge her and maybe scratch her under the chin - she will usually warm up to someone very slowly, and you can tell is still a little suspicious of the new person - and there are some people she just growls at and nothing works. I put her in her cage and let her know I am disappointed in her behavior whenever she acts inappropriately with a new person, but I can tell she is what I believe "scared" of strangers. When I walk her she is fine if we are a little distance from people, doesn't mind them being there, but if someone is walking toward us, she starts dragging me along to get away from them (isn't mean, just prefers to get out of there). But she did well at her last vet check, the vet ignores her at first and then she warms up to them and even lets them bear hug her to trim nails and stuff. So she is doing good - and better than she was with strangers, I guess like some people, she is shy and a little uncomfortable around new people. Any other suggestions about how I can help her over this? I try to socialize her as much as possible, but I have to be careful where I bring her so people don't come up on her suddenly etc.. Otherwise, she looks good, is a joy to have around - just so much happy energy - loves to play fetch and still bosses Boomer around, but we try to crack down on that as much as we can. So will try to attach some recent pictures. Take care. Millie
From Judy Millie, Have you talked to a professional trainer? I still think she got the Devil scared out of her by a stranger when you all weren't around. Seems a long time ago I helped a lady with her bully, not mine, it had been boarded for a week and when the owners returned she was very aggressive toward strangers. They could only assume one or more workers at the place where it was boarded, would sneak up on it and scare it just to see the reaction, which they feel got pretty aggressive after the first time or two. It's so hard to re-train them. I told those people to keep their pockets full of treats, the homemade Peanut Butter bars, and whenever it (believe it was a she) met a stranger, if possible to let the stranger give her the treat if not they should give it to her. Seems it took a month or so but it worked. This was about 8 years ago, so I don't have total recall on the situation. lol lol Wonder why!!! We'll do email. - Judy Bully Peanut Butter Treats, really easy and they just love them !! 2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 cup peanut butter 1 egg 2 tablespoons oil 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1/2 cup water Combine all ingredients and mix well. From: Patti Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2006 11:52 AM Subject: Mr. G (From Carlotta's 032706 Litter) Hi Judy, I emailed you at another email address and then found this one. I wanted to make sure you got this so I am doing it again. Mr. G is a big boy!!! Closing in on 6.5 months now, he is quite the character. I am sending a picture of him at 4 months. He looks the same now only bigger.....We had him to the vet about a month ago and he weighed 43# The way he eats I'm sure he will breeze past his parents weight.
He stays pretty
close to me, usually sleeping by my feet no matter what I'm doing, if I sit long enough
for him to fall asleep. He helped in the yard once the weather got cooler. He was a
great help carrying branches I had cut off bushes and playing in the weeds that were
pulled. It was too much help though when it was time for the pine straw. He had to go
inside, and immediately fell asleep and didn't move for several hours. Gardening is hard
work for a baby bulldog. He continues to make us smile and laugh on a daily basis. Thank
you for such a great puppy. We love him to pieces. He is quite the celebrity at the
boarders. We have boarded him only 2X however. He just has that personality that says,
I'm handsome and you should tell me that at least every 5 minutes. Okay maybe we have
been responsible for that attitude....but he is a very handsome puppy. I have read some
of your journal entries and am glad to hear you are taking it easy for awhile. We all
need time to recharge. This is turning into a book. I just wanted you to know Mr. G is
doing fine in Jackson, MS and survived the very hot summer!!! When it was time to go
potty he would run from the patio through the sun to the shade to take care of business.
Take care, Patti :)

Saturday - 01/06/2007 8:50 AM From: Sarah Sent: Wednesday, November 01, 2006 11:06 PM Judy, I thought you would want to see some pictures of Lucy's 1st Birthday Party, Miss B's 10/31/05 Litter. She was quite the little star and really enjoyed her special day! She dressed as a princess since her birthday is Halloween. She just loves tulle -- I can't tell you the costumes of the girls (and tutus) she has shredded over the last year. She loves to play dress up and is very feminine! I think she was a bit jealous that she had to share her day with the kids since she is a Halloween baby -- but she understood that she couldn't trick or treat -- she was fine to stay home with her "treat" (as you can see!).
p.s. Elle is doing great and got some treats at the party, too. She isn't much on dressing up, so she came as beautiful, old girl self -- she will be 11 years old in a month They got Elle from us also. Sorry to be so long in posting this to the journal. Lucy is a beautiful "princess". lol lol - Judy From: "Susan Chandler" Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2006 5:56 PM Subject: Abbie Hey there. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back in touch with you, but things are a little hectic down here as well. I'm sending you a couple of pictures. The first is of Abbie on her first birthday with her homemade "cake" that her grandmama made. It's basically three big homemade peanut butter dog treats with peanut butter for icing. (If you couldn't tell, me babies LOVE peanut butter.) The other picture is of Winston, Abigail, and my
friends black lab pup Jasmine. This is a rare calm moment from the trio. Now
that Abbie's older and bigger, Winston has decided that she's finally big
enough to really play with and has been acting like a pup, and lost weight
in the process chasing her around the house playing tag. Of course when they
start up I have to puppy-proof the house and remove any breakable objects
out of their way (including myself). They've had a couple of issues, Winston
had a bad ear infection and has occasional staff infections and Abbie has
distichiasis which means that not only does she have long, pretty, girly
eyelashes, but that she has some that are on the inside of her eyelid that
cause her eyes to water, hence the tear stains. We were watching it to see
how she did as she got older, but now that she's over a year old, I want to
go ahead and have it taken care of before it starts to hurt her. Other than
that, she is absolutely fine. I have my own version of the Looney Tunes dogs.
The big bulldog (Spike) that was a teddy bear and the little terrier that
was always acting bigger than he was. Abbie's my little toughie and
Winston's my big teddy bear. I could talk about them all day and just tell
you stories, but I know you are a busy woman so I won't keep you. Take care
of yourself. Take time each day to enjoy life, and those around you. God
Bless, Susan Chandler

We have newer photos that we have gotten developed, when I get them scanned into the computer I will pass them along so you can see how he is growing up. Its so cute he always lets them run off and waits for them to come back, because they run too far for him, then he jumps all over them, by the time we go home from walking him he's soooo tired he just goes straight to bed and starts snoring hehehe. Anyway here is one of him in the playground at a Chicago park, and the other one is at home being lazy watching the bears game with us. Hope you enjoy them, and Happy Holidays! Sincerely Erica
Friday - 01/05/2007 11:00 AM In reference to Cow Manure I asked a group of doggie, but not Bulldoggie friends for any information or experience they had on the topic. They shared the same concerns as I stated below in reference to if it was chemically decomposed and added it was very important to keep a dog off a chemically fertilized yard. Also they enlightened me to the fact that there are some dogs which are strongly attracted to fresh cow manure to the point of actually rolling in it and eating it. Yuck!! I'm down to 67 emails left in my inbox which I will work on answering today but most of these require a long carefully thought out answer. Yesterday I responded to a young couple who had gotten a English Bulldog pup 2 weeks ago and it came with a cold and when they tried to contact their breeder they found they were on vacation. Naturally they are very concerned about their "baby". I told them to take it back to the vet if it was still sick and while there request an x-ray to see if it's trachea was too small. A small trachea means most likely it would not be able to cough up phlegm therefore there would be a high probability that the cold could go into pneumonia. I got a response back last night thanking me for my email and telling me they had taken the pup to another vet yesterday, who told them if they had continued on the low dose antibiotic the other vet had prescribed that the pup would have been in serious trouble. This vet also did a much more through examination, took x-rays and gave the pup a vitamin shot because it was not eating properly. They found a good vet this time!!! My Bullies seldom get sick, therefore when one does I always insist upon the high end dosage of an antibiotic and if there isn't noticeable difference in a couple of days, we're back at the vet's office. Have a good day and a GREAT weekend.- Judy PS I forgot to tell you all I celebrated my big 60 birthday on November 29, sick in bed but that's OK. We also missed Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations because I couldn't eat. I did however manage to stay up long enough on Christmas to cook Bob Turkey and dressing. I try to keep in mind the silver lining of this cloud, I didn't gain any weight eating a lot of "goodies". Thursday - 01/04/2007 6:00 PM My email inbox had over 1000 emails, there is no way I could sort through all that mess so I mass deleted what I thought might be scams and spams, older emals and basically only kept those sent from our Feedback Link, applications and Dec - Jan dated emails. Bottom line I had around 200 left, now I'm down to 82. I'm sorry to say I just don't have the time to answer people's questions in regard to their Bully, mainly because I don't have a crystal ball and didn't know the answers, sure wish I did. One such question was should they keep their English Bulldog off their freshly fertilized lawn, fertilized with Cow Manure. I have no way of knowing the process the poop went through. My guess would be if it was naturally decomposed it shouldn't hurt the Bully but if it were chemically decomposed, I wouldn't trust it. But then the question is back to ingesting Cow manure period and I don't know poop about that. lol lol Thursday - 01/04/2007 1:30 PM Available Eenglish Bulldog Puppies
