Bringing Up Sophia - A Work In Progress

Saturday - 02/28/04 - 4:30 PM CST

Today has certainly been an odd one...Bob hurt my feelings really bad, something he never does I suppose that is why it upset me so badly. We were going to the "Big Flea Market" (lol) down the road about 25 miles. On the way, I asked him to stop so I could look at a chaise for sale at one of the yard sales along the way. He got just plain weird about the chaise and told me "NO" when I told him I loved it!! He forgot I was a grown person.... We talked it out, he's just overly tired since he's taking care of Jelly 24X7, trying to let me have extra rest, plus all the other work he is trying to get accomplished. He apologized profusely and I forgave, so we're OK. I know it's weird, BUT that's why I bought myself a Parakeet. Meet Gus....

Michelle goes to her new home tomorrow and Cinnamon Roll is now reserved and will be going to her new home in 10-14 days. If Jelly was just well enough to take to Nan, life would be back to normal for a few weeks. As it is, I don't think we are going to be able to have any "down time" before the next puppies arrive in late March.

I hope you are having a good weekend. - Judy

Friday - 02/27/04 - 9:30 AM CST

Yesterday was one of those day when my telephone just kept ringing, some of the calls were "normal" and some were really "out there". I'm about to the point of "letting the answering machine take over" for a while. I want to talk to people who have one of our "babies", want one of our pups or just want to ask some questions about Bullies in general, but not the woman who cursed at me because I declined to let her have a pup or the "animal rights" person who is obviously spending a ton of money calling breeders to tell them how awful she thinks they are. If I had a Bully with their attitude, it surely would not be allow to pass its genes on to a new generation.

About 5 PM, Bob graciously agreed to handle the remaining chores so I could crawl in bed and pull the covers over my head... between the telephone calls and working really hard I was exhausted. I didn't get back up until 6 AM this morning!!!

I've promised myself 'no crazy people today' so if you call, just holler into the answering machine "I'm not crazy" and I'll answer the phone.. That is unless you are crazy and then I would appreciate advanced notice of your intent to call, so I'll be prepared for the occasion. (lol lol).

Hope your day is good, Judy

- 7:00 AM CST

Jelly Belly is doing much better.... She is eating by herself!!!! We're holding our breath hopeful that she won't have a setback. Words can't describe the time, emotions and love which have gone into helping her in her struggle to survive. Bob is wonderful. I don't know another person who would have given her such intensive, gentle, loving, care for these 9 long weeks. Her struggle is not over but she has taken a giant step forward.

Wednesday - 02/25/04 - 1:00 PM

Isn't this a beautiful face.... I would love to keep her, but there's no room. She is Jelly's sister Cinnamon Roll. The people who were to have picked her up last weekend had a sudden illness in the family and were unable to get her.

....a life jacket helps to keep us afloat, but we have to make the decision to take our face out of the water. So what do you make of that statement!!! Those are the words I wrote earlier this morning in an email to a dear friend going through hard times. I was speaking of some my life experiences which at the time caused me such terrible pain... betrayal, lost loves, lost money, lost opportunities....but upon looking back I see clearly that most resulted in improving my life. Although, at the time I would never have believed this to even be a possibility.

Although it is a rainy, overcast day my spirits are soaring!!! Now if I could just get my body to fly so high! I've got a hundred things I need to do today. Take care and look on the sunny side of life!!! - Judy

Tuesday - 02/24/04 - 4:00 AM CST

Jelly Belly has gotten too big for her box which is shown below. She can now stand on tippy-toe and pull at the blanket on top. Afraid she would be able to get over the side in the middle of the night and hurt herself falling, we transferred her to a small crate with a heating pad at one end. For more pictures click here and scroll way down the page. Jelly Roll's Story & More Pictures

Lucy Yesterday, I answered a bucket load of emails and still have 27 in my mailbox. It's 50 degrees but raining so outside chores will have to wait, meanwhile I'm going to get an early start on my inside work. Later today I hope to post new pictures of Lucy and update "Bringing Up Sophia".

10:30 AM - The picture to the left is of Lucy owned by Jodi of NY. She was My Uggy Girl and she's turning out to be beautiful!!! More Pics Of Lucy - Click Here!

I hope the sun shines on your life today, Judy

Monday - 02/23/04 - 8:00 AM CST

I'm slow moving this morning.....

Knowing I was extremely tired last night, Bob got up early and took care of "our gang". When he heard me moving around upstairs, he hollered up to ask if I wanted breakfast. Moments later I was seated at the table where a breakfast of sausage, eggs and biscuits awaited 'longside' a big cup of coffee. Beggar Jeb, intrigued with the tail-end of my gown, since he had never seen me in one before, sniffed and gently nibbled it as he sat patiently at my feet waiting for me to give him my leftovers.

I spoke with my friend Mary Ellen from Buffalo, NY yesterday and her females are going to be ready to breed soon. I told her she was welcome to bring one or all down here, leave them, we would have them bred by our vet using Jazzman and she could come back in about 10 days to get them. Yes, I really did that, so I'm going to have to get over being "tired" quickly. (lol lol) These are her Bullies: Corky (daughter of Amber & Mini-E), Paducah (daughter of Reba & PepperJack) and Czonka (daughter of Gabby & Elvis).

Speaking of Gabby the sweetest of all Bullies, she will be bred to GuitarMan for the final time today. (The females are bred every other day as long as they are "standing".) If all goes well, her puppies will be born the end of April and be ready for their new homes the middle of June. Below are pictures of Gabby & GuitarMan

Enough "resting" I have to get up and get to work on my chores, Judy

Sunday - 02/22/04 - 5:00 AM CST

Arielle & Rubie (aka Sleepy's Prudence I pulled myself upright about an hour ago with the promise that I could take a nice long nap in the afternoon... idle promise!! Jelly was crying so my feet hit the floor moving fast. Right now she is snuggled in tight with Bob in the bed and I'm wide awake. "Our Gang" doesn't know I'm up so there have been no calls to be let out to potty.

While King Bizkit was 'off lead' and running yesterday afternoon, he spotted a mound of moving hair in my flower bed so he charged toward it barking, not fierce just barking. The Dingo "high tailed it" out of here. The Dingo, wild dog who stayed in the woods surrounding the house for 5 months before we could get him to come near us, has recently assigned himself the position of protector and will take on another dog three times his size if it wanders onto the property, but let one of the Bullies challenge him and he's gone. Bizkit really thinks he's King now. He's 14" shoulders to the ground, 14" shoulders to tail and weighs 40 pounds, making him a quarter of the size of Dingo.

Rubie Going Home (aka Sleepy's Prudence I got these pictures from the Stines last night and thought you would enjoy them. The first one is of Arielle and Rubie (a.k.a. Sleepy's Prudence) "going home". The second picture of Devin snuggling on the edge of the children's pool with Cinnamon Roll was taken while they were here.

Hope you have a peaceful Sunday, Judy

Saturday - 02/21/04 - 1:00 PM CST

The Stine family from Virginia arrived Friday evening to pick up Prudence and take her to her new home. Prudence's new name is 'Zowie'. Zowie is their first English bulldog and loved being held, petted, and spoiled! She seemed to be a perfect match for everyone in the family and especially for the kids! Everyone 'ooo'd' and 'aahed' over the puppy's parents, Sleepy and Pepper Jack. (Pepper Jack was a perfect gentleman almost - lol...) After the new puppy indoctrination lessons, some of the other bullies visited with the Stines and then it was time to leave -- back to Virginia!

Plans are that they will breed Zowie when she's old enough and maybe raise bulldogs... Bob and I (and "Our Gang") enjoyed their visit. They are truly the kind of people who you would like to have as close neighbors!

Prudence's New Family - - Prudence's New Family

Jelly Roll is doing quite well eating and gaining weight. She still has to work at swallowing food but it's not coming out her nose as it has been. The feeding schedule is now every four hours instead of three but she hollers if we're late! This morning, she spent ten minutes in the kiddie pool while her living quarters were being cleaned. She LOVED it -- "I'm such a big girl!" She tried to engage Lisa Marie in conversation which was very difficult since Lisa Marie is about five hundred times Jelly's size! But, it was fun to watch Jelly trying to get Lisa's attention.

Speaking of Jelly Roll, her sister, Cinnamon Roll, is available as of this morning... It seems as though her prospective parents had a family health problem develop last week and will not be able to get her. Pumpkin is on the small side and has had a belly button hernia (which has been corrected and subsequently vet checked). But, she is BEAUTIFUL and very sweet and cuddly! Bob says that even though she's a 'keeper', I can't! Too many bulldogs! (Some men just don't know...) The only problem is I can't find a place to hide her so I'll have to find the perfect home for her.

I hope your weather is as GRAND as ours, just makes the soul feel free....Judy

Friday - 02/20/04 - 5:00 AM CST

I must quickly say Good Morning .... before the sun comes up which is a signal to "our gang" that it is time to go potty!!

We're incredibly busy and once again the emails have accumulated in my mailbox. If you haven't gotten a reply from me, please be patient. Today we're concentrating on projects around the house and yard. Bob is still asleep since he was up several times last night taking care of Jelly, therefore I haven't had the opportunity to discuss plans with him.

Jeb has gotten so stubborn! I feel certain it's because he's gotten less attention, since we've had the puppies and Jelly is taking up so much of our time. We've decided when the van leaves the house, he is to go along. We'll just start calling him Jeb VanDog.

Have a Wonderful Weekend, Judy

Thursday - 02/19/04 - 7:00 AM CST

Good Morning!!!! If you haven't already, please read the above Prayer Request, poor little Arizona is really suffering. Her Grandmother, Tammy Sellers is a Bully Breeder in southern Mississippi. Although I have not met her personally, we have been in contact for several years via email. This is what my dear friend Nan, hospice nurse, wrote to me in regard to our Prayer Request page: "I've seen many miracles in my work that are not explained by modern medicine. - Nan"

Today, we're making two trips to the vet, plus plan to work in the yard since we're forecasted to have clear skies and a high near 60. I'm going to turn on the attic fan and air out the house while I clean because tomorrow the Stines are coming from VA to get Michelle.

In reference to the Penguin (below), I laugh every time I see the silly thing. Can't you relate!!!! I sure can. Just minding my own business and get smacked down!! So far, I've been like the Penguin and "came right back up".

Here are some pictures of Jelly Bean (a.k.a. Jelly Roll). She is in a clear plastic storage box which is sitting on top of a crate in the kitchen so she can watch me buzz around. She is so very funny and smart!!! When Bob, out on the back porch, passed the window of the door behind her she saw him and turned around to watch. Look close at the first picture and you can tell her eyes are little slits, so she won't miss anything. She is laying on a heated Snuggle Safe disk with her head resting on a 20 oz plastic drink bottle filled with hot water and covered with a diaper blanket. Another diaper blanket is on top of the box to hold in the heat. To secure the blanket to the top, preventing her from being able to use it to climb out of the box and get hurt, I finally found the perfect tool, 'gutter clips' used to secure Christmas lights to a rain gutter on a house. I cut a hole in the blanket to prevent excess heat build up.

Got to run all my "babies" want me, Judy

Wednesday - 02/18/04 - 7:00 AM CST

Ever have one of those days??? My friend and fellow breeder, Tammy Sellers, sent this Penguin clip to me and it was just too funny not to pass along!!

Whew!!! Bob and I made an 8 hour round trip to Birmingham, Alabama to take care of some business and met Andy & Brandy of Florida, the new parents of Rita daughter of Sleepy & Pepper. Here is their "Going Home" picture---

Rita going home with Andy and Brandy

We took Jelly Bean with us of course and she insisted upon riding in Bob's arms the complete trip while I drove. Isn't that spoiled!!! She has all of a sudden gotten a GREAT appetite and we're holding our breath, hopeful that it is an indicator that she is "going to make it".

I'm behind in my chores and have a vet visit scheduled for this afternoon, so I best get back to working. - Judy

Tuesday - 02/17/04 - 7:00 AM CST

Dakota
On Saturday Pumpkin Roll's new parents Russ & Tina, came to take her home to Indiana. Her new name is Dakota

The floors were powerful dirty due to "our gang" having tracked in mud which is the result of all the rain we have had lately. The lowlands have really been flooded and one of my favorite backroads was under water. I worked from 5 AM to 7 PM cleaning house and doing my chores. Dang, I tried to teach "our gang" to wipe their feet, but they just kept saying, "Look, Dad doesn't wipe his feet". I tried to explain.. Bob is so wonderful I couldn't complain about him not wiping his feet, but they don't understand. (lol lol)

GuitarMan a.k.a Cowboy On Sunday at Noon, I was scheduled to meet friends and Rita's new parents in Birmingham, Alabama but canceled the trip upon seeing a Winter Wonderland when I looked out the bedroom window. We're located in the Mid-South where we usually only get a good two inch snow once a year. As a result there are a lot of people who get "snow crazy" and drive like fools, either scared to death or Evil Knievel style. I certainly don't want to be on the road with either of these type drivers.

GuitarMan a.k.a Cowboy It's good that I called both parties early to cancel, because their phone numbers were in my computer which was of no value during the power failure that followed. We were without power until early Monday morning. Thank Goodness we have gas heat and a large reserve tank on our well.

As you can tell by these pictures of GuitarMan (a.k.a. Cowboy) the Bullies had fun playing in the snow. Bob couldn't resist taking pictures of Peanut, so enjoy....
The Latest Adventures of Peanut -
Snow Days!!

Monday was spent making trips to the vet's clinic to continue breeding females; Crissy, Lisa Marie and Miss B. Our conception rate is usually 1 out of 3, therefore we are hopeful of getting one litter from this round of breedings.

Jelly's health has been on a roller coaster and probably will be until we are able to get her cleft palate fixed ... I just hope she makes it that long. I can't tell you how much love, time and emotions have gone into the little thing. For one or two days she will be doing well and eating on her own. We exhale deeply, grateful at the possibility of 'no more hand or tube feedings', then hours later she has a reversal. This is due to food particles getting into the opening in her palate. So far she has been able to sneezed it out her nose instead of it going into her lungs which would surely result in pneumonia. The food particles cause a reoccurring sinus infection which in turn results in a loss of appetite because she doesn't feel well and can't smell ...poor baby!! We'll continue to pray and care for her as best we can.

Plants...
Pictures of just some of the plants we've brought inside for the winter!!!!

Plants Plants Plants Plants Plants Plants

I can't wait until Spring so they can go back out on the porches!!!!! Watering all 147 of them is just a huge task and since so many are in hanging pots they have to be taken into the kitchen to ensure no harm comes to the cherry flooring in the front rooms that Bob worked so hard finishing!!! The above pictures were taken in October, now most of the blooms and leaves have dropped off and the limbs are growing long and skinny from too little light, etc. Fortunately they will recover nicely once they are moved onto the porches. Many are still beautiful but as with everything in my life, I over did it in regard to having so many!!!

Take care of yourself and those you love today. - Judy

"We have one mission in life, and that mission is to love" - Mother Theresa

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 50 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone contend that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love dogs… smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
