Puppy Gal Welcomes You To
Judy's Journal....

I started this feature for friends and family to answer their "What's going on?" emails,
therefore, I probably tell too much,
but you are welcome to laugh, cry and sigh with us.

I don't believe in the 'Friday the 13th Bad Luck' theory so we won't go there. Sorry we didn't take pictures yesterday as I told you we were planning to do. We had to have dog food, and we wanted to be together, so we both went to PetSmart in Tupelo, MS which took 4 hours because I always have other places to "shop" along the way. Back to pictures for a moment, very soon all the pictures on the website have to be updated to reflect our "New Generation". We are also kicking around ideas for new features: Oldies But Goodies (which will highlight the elder members of "Our Gang") Favorite All Time Pictures and a PuppyGal Forum (chat room for people who have our "babies" only).

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, we're going to have a busy one!! - Judy

Thursday - 02/12/04 - 9:00 AM CST

After breakfast of Toll House Cookies and coffee, I asked Bob what he wanted me to cook for lunch. He responded Chili fix the same way as last week. I was Belly Laughing .... First I opened what I thought was S&W brand baked beans but it turned out to chili fixin', so I made chili. It wasn't highly seasoned so I kept "adding" to it and Bob kept tasting and pronouncing it to be "bean soup". Finally, I told him the dogs would like it. A few hours later the aroma of burnt Chili assailed my nostrils and rushing downstairs I found he had turned off the fire but there was a layer of scorched chili at the bottom of the pan. I advised against stirring too deeply. Limited space in the refrigerator and it being 30 degrees outside, resulted in Bob sitting the pan on the baker's rack outside the backdoor. That night the low was 16 so Bob found the chili frozen solid when he brought it in for lunch the next day. It thawed and he stirred deeply. With the first bite he declared it was the "best chili ever". Now he wants me to fix him another pot exactly like that one, I don't think so.....

Lisa Marie, the "begger girl" has already gaining about 7 pounds. She evidently likes human food because she really "talks" to us when we're eating, but we make her save her appetite for our special blend of "gourmet dog food". She is taking antibiotics for a vaginal infection which we are hoping to get cleared up before she comes into heat later this month. She is definitely a "silly thing" but should calm down considerably once she has a litter of pups.

Belcher is back to her "silly putty" self and frightening the humans with her cat imitation, walking on the back of the couch!!! I know it's got to be funny but "oh so dangerous". Belcher stay on the floor!!!

Take care and check back later today for pictures we are planning on taking. We've been having trouble taking clear pictures, so we're trying a different camera. - Judy

Wednesday - 02/11/04 - 6:00 AM CST

We're up and going this morning. If I get the details finalized today, Rita & Michelle will be reserved. I thought a couple from Georgia wanted Prudence, but they haven't responded to my last email. If they don't respond, I will just feel it wasn't meant to be...

Make this day a good one. - Judy

Late yesterday afternoon I made my weekly trip to Corinth to do a little grocery shopping and had so much fun.. doing a "Lucy Thing"!!! I bought 70 pounds of shank portion hams and have no place to store them!!! Now the rest of the story, I only paid $.30 a pound!!! That is not a typo 30 cents per pound. "Our Gang" will be eating good... I use all sorts of meats to supplement their dog food, giving them a litte in their soaked food on a daily basis.(lol lol lol)

Bob just shakes his head and says only I luck into deals like this. There is another story about me buying 21 whole BBQ'd chickens for a $1 each because a Tornado Warning had been issued and I was the only one "out" grocery shopping (I didn't know)!! The outside cooking team at the grocery had to close down quick and I was there.

The low last night was 35 so I left the hams in the van and now have to figure out where to put them. Dingo said he had extra room in his belly!!

BelcherWhile I was out shopping, Kathy left a message on the answering machine because Belcher had become very ill, throwing up, etc. Bullies sometime just spit up clear liquid but Belcher had severe intestinal distress.

Subject: Belcher sick?

Hi Judy; just left you a voice mail and hoping you are on line right now. Belcher was just fine tonight, running playing eating,,, then vomited the entire contents of her stomach then twice more brownish liquid, foamy drool out of the mouth. I am of course panicked. She is acting slow and I think afraid. I checked all areas, there is nothing she got into. Not knowing this breed, we tried to reach our vet, and were referred to the emergency clinic in Appleton, their advice was to watch her... but bring her in if we wanted. She has drank a little water,, any advice?

After several conversations with the Emergency Vet and one with me, it was concluded to just observe her because she had drank a little water and was napping.

From: Kathy
Judy; It is just over an hour since I talked with you. In that time Jim has talked with 2 vets at the emergency clinic. She took a nap, now after starting a little slow, she is snorting, playing, barking and drinking water.... I cannot thank you enough for being there in my time of panic... I have never seen her be sick, or acting so subdued.

I sent a return email, telling them I was going to sleep with the telephone and to please call if they needed me.

Got to run... I have a million things to do today - Judy

Monday - 02/09/04 - Noon CST

When I woke up at 5 AM it was raining outside, about half of what Bob said didn't make sense to me and my poor body was aching!!! I'll admit to feeling more than a bit gloomy.

After the first round of chores were completed, I gave myself a "good talkin' to" over a cup of coffee.

"So where's the smile that gets you through most anything?? You sure can't enjoy yourself or make other people smile with a frown on your face!!!"

I believe I went a little overboard on the lectures because now, I have one of my "Good News Is On It's Way" feelings, but at least I'm smiling and in a light-hearted mood. If you're grumpy, please remember, "Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it" - Judy

6:00 AM CST

My mailbox is clean!!! It took me all day yesterday to respond to all the emails but finally, at 9 PM, I had it cleared out.

Big Boo Update: Moving fast, he jumped on top of a wire crate blocking his way and his paw got caught causing both his hip and knee to be broken. We did a "Fund Raiser" for him in August 2003, so he could have an operation to hopefully prevent him from being crippled for life. Here is an email from his owner giving us an update on his condition:

From: Tina

Subject: Big Boo

His leg.....even though he's confined 99.999% to his bedroom, bathroom and livingroom, every once in a while he'll get this urge to run as fast as he can from one room to the other before I can stop him. I let him outside to use the bathroom when I sense he really needs to experience what it's like to be out. Otherwise, he's been using papers for 8 months....and my hardwood floors are showing it! We have had snow since October, and he loves snow! He tricks me by walking normally, then will take off flying! He's too funny. It hurts me that he can't just be "Boo". It will be a happy day when the surgeon says Boo can play and not be restricted.

Precious Boo is healthy, except for his interdigital cysts being inflamed. Treatments of bleach solution, Preparation H, and apple cider vinegar are the mainstay at this point. They are dry one day, but swollen and bloody the next. He's had so many antibiotic shots, and been on oral antibiotics too often. So, I'm sticking to the routine and trying to manage it myself until he goes to see the surgeon mid-February for a physical.

Below are picture of Big Boo with Tina's son, Sean and his father

Reading this email, we certainly can tell how much Tina loves Big Boo and she can be assured that he is still in our prayers. - Judy

What a picture!! I just had to share this with you although this isn't one of our "babies" .. what a pair!!! Owned by Joe, Julia, & Imogen of Perkasie, PA.

Bob slept with Jelly Bean (a.k.a. Jelly Roll and Jelly Belly) cradled under his chin most of the night. They were in and out of bed with him giving her medicine and feeding her tiny portions every 3 hrs or so. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep. Here are pictures of Jelly, laying in bed with me, snuggling in my hair .. she likes the cover pulled up over our heads.

It's 20 degrees here this morning, which really is toooooooo cold for Bullies and humans, but it's 'potty time'. After the first round of chores are completed we're going to sit down to breakfast, or maybe brunch depending upon how long the chores take. We're having French Toast with Strawberry Syrup and a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Have a wonderful, lazy Sunday and please remember to pray for our Fellow Americans In Uniform and people who are struggling with pain and worry. - Judy

Roxie runs over, jumps up takes a snowman glove in her mouth and takes off like a shot! Of course they chased her forever till they got it back. She was loving every minute of it! - Susie

Hi Judy! We thought you might want to see some updated pictures of Lola (Butterfinger Cookie). She is about 27 lbs right now. She is also getting better at the nipping. We tried the whistle and that didn't work at all! It's funny that she really calmed down after that night that I sat and talked to you through email. It's almost like she knew that she was being bad! Of course, she still has her bad moments (or hours!)

I know you have been busy as heck... I am attaching some pictures of Belcher from December and some from January, the one with the Lab mix was taken today. Jim helped me measure her, and she is about 14 inches from the top of her shoulder to the floor. From tail to neck is about 18 inches, and the broadest part of her chest is right around 10 inches.Guessing she is now in the 26 pound range. She is a sweetie, at a little over 5 months of age, she is incredibly well behaved, snores like a freight train!! Take care and stay in touch as you can. - Kathy

Saturday - 02/07/04 - Noon CST

Bob & I are exhausted, but we have tons of chores to get done and I have 76 unanswered emails!!!

Jelly Roll, I like the name Jelly Bean better, is still very sick and therefore has been right with us 24x7, mostly being held. She is having to be fed via a tube to her stomach, poor baby.

In the last four days, we haven't been home except long enough to take care of "our gang" and sleep because we had to have the van repaired two of those days and multiple trips to the vet on the other days. Yesterday's van repair took a total of 7 hours by the time we drove 3.5 hours, the repair took 3 hours and we stopped for lunch ... I get very grouchy when hungry.

This morning's trip to the vet was to breed Mini-E to Crissy. I am attempting to create a Mini-Bully bloodline which is not mixed with a Pug or Boston, as most are. Crissy weights less than 20 lbs and I have tried for two years to catch her in heat to bred her to Mini-E, who is 14 inches from shoulder to the ground, 14 inches long and weights 40 lbs. The combination of these two Bullies is exactly the end result that I am wanting, 20-30 lbs and 10-11 inches tall and long. The pictures below are not recent, but you can get an idea of how they look.

Crissy Mini-E

We're taking tomorrow as a partial rest day, regardless!! Take care and don't work as hard as we do!! - Judy

Friday - 02/06/04 - 7:30 PM CST

This has been a fast paced, emotionally draining week which I do not want to repeat anytime soon.

For most of the last 24 hours Bob has been holding Jelly because she was so sick. This morning she is better, Thank Goodness!!!

Last night I got a very disturbing telephone call from a person I love, who wanted my help, but I had to say "No". My prior experiences with them taught me they need someone else, because it is beyond my ability to help them. It was so terribly hard to say "NO" and tears were rolling down my face as I did so.

My heart is still sad this morning, but I'm going to put a smile on my face and be happy. - Judy

I had to share this picture of Lucy, Sleepy & PepperJack's "baby" owned by Jodi of NY:

- 6:00 AM CST

Yesterday was one of those crazy days where a negative happening turns into a positive fun experience.

The brakes went out on the van, 80 miles from home in an unfamiliar but metropolitan area of Southaven, Mississippi. We were luck enough to spot a big "GOODYEAR" sign on the front of a newly opened tire service store on Goodman Road. The people working there were great and we totally enjoyed an indepth conversation with another customer, an extremely interesting, highly opinionated, blunt spoken 60 year old Black man. I mention his age and race because much of our conversation had to do with race, politics, war, illegal immigrants, etc. I even got him started on Israel and he was shocked to learn we share the same opinions. It's nice to be up here in the woods all by ourselves, but invigorating interaction of this sort is 'food for the soul'.

We had taken Jelly Roll with us because we expected to be gone more than two hours and she sat in her clear Rubbermaid storage box on the store counter where she was the center of attention, because people could look thru the sides to see what she was doing. The Snuggle Safe had cooled off by the time the brakes were repaired, so I found a convenience store with a microwave, for warming sandwiches, and used it to warm the disk. My next option would have been an appliance store, where I would ask to use a demo microwave. Speaking of Jelly Roll, she has a cold, which of course is of major concern. She is on antibiotics and lots of loving time, poor baby.

Make today a fun day. - Judy

Subject: Omega Fatty Acids

Hey....just read the thing on omega fatty acids...when Timmy was a year or so old the hair on her back was so thin in spots she looking like she was balding....she's been on omega three fatty acids (or as we call them "fish pills") ever since....she loves them...she thinks they are treats and comes running when i tell her it's time for her fish pill....the vet said something about the way some bulldogs utilize fatty acids in their diets and that they need the extra supplement.....i have noticed now that she's older that even if i don't give them to her for awhile her hair stays nice and thick.

Yesterday afternoon, we needed a computer monitor, dog food and a few hours off, so we went to Memphis (Tennessee). We had lunch at the Olive Garden which would have been enjoyable had not the large table next to us been occupied by a group of extremely boisterous car salesmen, reminded me of "our gang" at early morning 'I gotta go potty' time. (lol lol)

Speaking of which, they've started in telling me "I gotta go". Have a wonderful day!! - Judy

Tuesday - 02/03/04 - 6:00 AM CST

Will the lady from New York, NY who called me yesterday morning, please call or send an email to let me know the outcome of the visit with the Vet!!!!

She called yesterday to ask me a question and in the course of our conversation I came to the conclusion that her new bully puppy might be very sick.

Bless Her Heart, she was recently diagnosed with breast cancer the result of which was a mastectomy as well as with chemo which caused her to lose all the hair on her body ... both of which are high on the list of any woman's worse nightmares. Knowing personally, the shock she experienced at facing the possibility of death, the questioning of "is there a God and why did he allow this to happen to me" and the struggle against feeling sorry for ourselves, my heart went out to her and we both shed tears of joy at the pleasure her Bully has brought to her life. She got her "baby" last Friday as a surprise present from her husband, unfortunately he bought it from a Pet Store.

I ask those of you who pray to please include her and her "Baby Bully". If you aren't a praying person would you please take a moment to silently wish them well. - Judy

Sgt. Pepper Going Home!!

Sgt. Pepper Going Home!!!

Kristen, Mark & Sgt. Pepper on their way back to Virginia

- 6:00 AM CST

Bully Shedding - I received the following information from a friend:

The name of the supplement we purchased at PetSmart for unseasonal shedding is "ShedRelief" made by Lambert Kay Company. It's an antioxidant and contains omega 6 fatty acids. I swear by the stuff."

Mark from Virginia is coming to pick-up Sgt Pepper, Sleepy Lady & Pepper's Pup, this morning so I'm rushing to get my chores done and the house straightened up before he gets here. Speaking of the puppies, the cutest thing ever is Jeb sitting beside the puppy pool with his head on the edge allowing the "babies" to kiss and nibble his face. Bob tried to get a picture of them but it's just too dark in the house, especially with my plants blocking the light from coming in the windows.

Got to hurry .... Judy

As we travel through this time span known as life, sooner or later we all face tragedy and will need encouragement to maintain our dignity and fight to survive. Just to be aware that other people know what we are facing and have sympathy for us, helps to nourish our soul and give us the strength to endure.

Today, if you know anyone who is struggling, please let them know that they are in your thoughts and prayers. - Judy

"We have one mission in life, and that mission is to love" - Mother Theresa

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 50 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone contend that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love dogs… smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
