I’ve gotten “too big for my britches” ..
Earlier in the week I went to town for supplies, alone. My first stop was the butcher
shop, they didn’t have anything on my “to buy list”. I was in desperate need of cracklings
to use as doggie treats and pork neck bones which I cook until the meat falls off to make
good pork gravy to pour over their softened kibble. I had been dreaming of Italian sausage
sandwiches. Add frustrated to my brain which was soggy from perspiration.
Next stop was a garden center for deer repellent. The owner spilled forth with dire
prediction of the squirrels coming into our homes this winter to eat and deer mowing down
all plants and shrub because there was no vegetation to sustain them over the winter. Even
my hope of rain to reverse the situation was shattered when she announced it was too late
in the year for us to get more rain or for it to help if we did. Already frustrated with a
soggy brain because I’m so hot, this did not improve my mood, I was glad to get away from
her.
Next I went to the Dollar Tree Store, got 11 round plastic pans to use under my
flowerpots. They are great to fill with water in the morning so the plants get a drink big
enough to last them all day, we’ve been experiencing drought conditions so they were
really needed. When the cashier finished ringing up my purchase and wanted tender, I
handed him a Visa credit card. That is when I discovered the only credit card they accept
is Discover, which I don’t use. Panic!! Here I am holding up the line but only have $10
cash in my pocket. Bright idea my PayPal card as either a credit card or a debit card,
they accept debit cards. Now what is the pin number, I’ve never used thus card and only
carry it because BigDaddy asked to do so, just in case! Quickly I tried to remember the
password! How can I think with all these people waiting on me. I asked the cashier how
many tries did I get on remembering the pin number and apologized over my shoulder to
everyone in the checkout line for the delay. I suppose they felt sorry for me because
everyone was really friendly. One woman had seen me looking at the money in my pocket and
asked how much I needed to be able to pay in cash. I got the pin number right the first
time!!! One problem resolved.
Next I went to Wal-Mart, the drink machine outside took my money but didn’t give me a
drink. I was so hot and befuddled that I just “chalked it up” to life’s happenings. With
my list in hand I gathered up the supplies and checked out with a full cart, plus a case
of canned puppy food on the lower rack. When I went to pay, I discovered my credit card
was missing. Panic set in …. I used another credit card to pay for the purchase but my
mind was racing trying to remember what I had done with the other card.
Out in the parking lot, my basket hit a pothole and cans of dog food went in every
direction. I prevented the last 10 from leaving the cardboard box bottom they were in but
that left 14 cans out and rolling. I’m trying to retrieve the rolling cans before they get
away or get run over when a Wal-Mart worker, nice young man who was bringing in baskets,
stopped to help and another young man stopped his car and got out to assist me. I had
traffic in the parking lot at a standstill. About this time I felt rather than heard a
seam rip in back of my pants. I had been experiencing a heat rash therefore I was only
wearing the one layer of clothing. What to do??? Should I stop bending
over and let the young men continue to retrieve the cans, alone? Feel to see if my behind
was showing thereby drawing attention to the problem? Mercy, where is my credit card. 101
degrees and now I’m fighting two panic situations.
Cans finally collected I get to the van, fumbling I get it unlocked and then discretely
feel the back seam of my pants. Whew, double stitched!!! I hurriedly looked for the credit
card before unloading the cart, no luck.
I remembered trying to use it at the Dollar Tree so I must not have returned it to my
pocket. When I went in the door at the Dollar Tree, the cashier had a big smile on his
face, started waving and said “I’ve got it in the office for you”. What a relief.
I made BigDaddy promise to go with me the next time, especially if it’s hot and my brain
power is running low from lack of sleep because we had been up and down with puppies all
night.
I might be "too big for my britches" but I sure met a lot of nice people by the time the
shopping trip was over. - Judy (Those pants are on a pillow not me!! lol lol)

Good Morning To Everyone!!!
I spent yesterday in-between taking care of puppies, trying to spoil Bob (Big Daddy). It
was his 70th birthday and it only comes once!! He is such a wonderful person. I don't
know what I would do without him in my life. He's a genius and I'm his anchor, kind of like
he's the hot air balloon flying high and I'm his contact on the ground... we don't "need"
each other but we compliment the other. Oh gosh, maybe the word is "need", we all need to
have someone in our life who understands us and facilitates our goals and objectives. He
refers to us as "split-aparts" who found each other.

Just Wanted To Say.... Happy Birthday To Bob Today!!
Last year was a bad drought year for most of us in the Mid-South. This year has proven to be the same.
There are many trees out in the woods that have turned brown and are loosing their leaves.
I'm afraid we're going to loose more trees including dogwoods, so we may have to stop
calling our place Dogwood Pond.
Yesterday in Corinth I had a talk with the owner of a nursery and she commented on how bad
the drought was and the fact that many growers in the area were loosing their stock to the
deer, because there is nothing else for the deer to eat. She expressed the fear that
squirrels would be coming into homes looking for food this winter because their natural
food sources are so scarce. She further stated that the season for rain had passed
therefore she didn't foresee the situation improving. I was feeling pretty perky until
this converation. I'm glad I'm not around her all the time. lol lol - Judy

Today is Picture Day!!!
We'll start off with Smart Cookie's puppies, simply because they happened to be in the pool
when I got this bright idea. Pictures of the other two litters will follow but it will probably
be tonight before I have the opportunity to post them.

Last evening it rained!! We are so proud to have gotten it, even the Kudzu was wilted.
For those who are not familiar with Kudzu, it is an infamous vine imported from Japan in the
early 1900's as food for farm animals and to prevent soil erosion but it is now considered a
super invasive weed that is covering a lot of land in the Southern part of the
USA. I would imagine it's the last plant to wilt in a drought, therefore to get the point
across as to how dry the land is, people will notice the kudzu and say "even the Kudzu is wilted".
The sun is out this morning and it's time to start doing the morning chores... but first I need
a cup of coffee and a slice of the banana bread I cooked a couple of days ago. - Judy

Up with puppies and then decided to try to beat the heat. The high today is predicted to
be 103F, right now it is only 72.5F but the humidity is 85%. I just started the washing
machine and the dryer, both heat producers. High temps and humidity sap our strength.
I'm one of those upon which stress builds ... yesterday I lost it I was so very tired and
stressed. I broke down and cried for a long time. Cried for the two puppies who have died
recently and for my "3 old big mamas" who passed away last year ... each one of them takin' a piece
of my heart.
One of Life's lessons that I've learned is .... grief catches up with us, no matter how fast
we run. Hugs, Judy

The orphaned deer ate about half the feed bread we put out last night. We were so tired we
just tossed out bread up and down the outside of the garden area, hopeful he would find it
and he did. I can't tell if there are any newly eaten plants or not. Up until yesterday
he hadn't eaten Iris or Angel's Trumpets, but he left a note last night saying, "More food
or I eat the Iris". lol lol Just my attempt at humor. A friend emailed me suggesting that his
name be Rocket since he can move so fast, so we've been referring to him as "Rocket Man".
Petunia & Jazzman's Puppies Born 072607
This is their first real food. It is Purina Puppy Chow soaked in water until it can be mushed
between the fingers plus a helping of Human Baby Formula sprinkled over the top. We've found that
evaporated milk, canine milk replacement formula, buttermilk and sweet milk cause them to have a loose
stool, but they can have human baby formula without this happening, as long as we don't sprinkle on
too much.
Petunia's puppies are give "flower" names

Good Morning Everyone!! I'll be back a little later with pictures of the "babies" and
hopefully an update on my deer feeding. Everything has to have a name what do you
think we should call this little fella who is eating the roses bushes. Since I think
it's a male, it would be funny to call him Rosie, on the other hand since he can run
like the wind, Bullet sounds like the perfect name. Later -Judy

Only one other time in my life have I said these words "I think I'm in trouble..." The
first time was when I knew my feelings for Bob were strong and the other was today when I
saw the deer that is feasting on all our plants.... "I think I'm in trouble", means
my heart is going to overrule my logic.
Ya'll it's a skinny, tiny thing that is all alone. I think he must be an orphan, that's
why he didn't know the rules about not munching out in the open when people were around.
The herd of 4 females that we have hanging around here, will look up and see us, know that
we're not an enemy and keep munching on the grass, but if their offspring get to wandering
our way they will call them back. He was by himself and too young to be away from his
mother. He became startled and shot like a rocket off into the woods. I didn't have it in
my heart to let the little fella get shocked by the Fido Electric Fence I was determined to
buy.
In town I hunted down people who had taken care of very young orphan deer and ask them what to
do. I came back from town with calf food pellets, feed bread, alfalfa pellets, apples
and more apples.
Wish me luck because he has to stop munching on the plants, but he's so skinny I can't
hold it against him right now. - Judy

I sure didn't mean to take the weekend off but ....
I don't know what happened, I might have gotten over-heated or it might have been stress,
whatever I got the worst headache and had to go to bed for 2 days. I'm up and going today
but I'm doing very little and absolutely nothing which might strain my neck or cause me
any discomfort. Bob thinks the headaches are a result of me lifting plants and puppies,
pulling on the water hose and getting too hot. I don't sweat like a normal person does, so I'm
red faced and light headed before I know what's happening. The good news is I'm much better and
almost back to normal .... well normal for me. lol lol
It's tough having 3 litters of puppies, because we have to deal with 3 mothers. Oh and I believe
Sugar Cookie is "with pups". She got real grouchy with Hope and Lisa Marie earlier today. Speaking
of grouchy, Reba is in her protective mother mode, high strung and barking at the slightest unfamiliar
sound. She is totally ignoring me when I tell her "no" about the barking. She thinks she is my mother
also, big stinker. This will probably last a week or two and she'll be past it.
We got a slight shower this weekend but it wasn't enough to keep the plants alive so we've been
watering the plants every day. Some have died and some have survived. The deer keep coming back for
snacks so I'm going to the bread store for "feed bread" and then to Wal-Mart for Deer Feed. They like
the "kids enriched" bread and or bread that is heavy textured. I will understand if they are just hungry,
but if they don't eat the feed but continue to eat my daylilies, we're going to have to have a talk.
Oh speaking of them eating plants, they ate all my big, old, beautiful hostas. That hurt more than them
eating the new daylilies.
All the puppies and mothers are doing fine, but it's a lot to keep up with so expect the journal postings
to be short and I hope sweet. Take the time today to appreciate the things and people in your environment
which bring a smile to your face, life is fragile. - Judy

Blahhhhhh!!! One of Reba's puppies passed away in it's sleep this morning. They were all alive
earlier and in plain view, then the next time we looked one was not breathing. So sad.. this is
about to get to me, I assure you, but better now than later. We're holding our breath the first
week is critical.
I'll get over this hump and be back to my perky self but it won't be today, so have a wonderful
weekend and appreciate what you have and those you love, while you have them. - Judy

I had to go to Tupelo, MS for dog food earlier today. Bob has had so much to do he forgot
we were low on Puppy Chow, so this morning we ran completely out. It's a 3 hours round trip
plus what time I spent shopping so I was exhausted by the time I return ..... I can't go to
just one place I have to stop everywhere. lol lol
The high yesterday in Corinth MS was 103.8F whereas in Jackson, TN it was 105. I think out
here in the woods it only got up to about 102F, but that's plenty hot enough. By mid-morning
I have to turn the mist on the Angel's Trumpets (brugs) that get morning sun
for a few minutes every hour and about 2 PM have to turn the mist on those that get
afternoon sun. These hose nozzles with the different settings which include "mist" surely
are nice. I have the afternoon hose set up to spray a mist without supervision from me.
Don't tell anyone, but it IS possible to grow mushrooms and brugs in the same pot.
Now is the time to began gathering seeds for winter sowing, gather them not only from your yard/garden but friends and
neighbors also. Many people do not care about seeds and are happy for you to deadhead
their plants. Some people have been know to deadhead flowers in public or semi-public
areas. Personally I do my public deadheading at 5AM when no ones around and there is very
little traffic. I'm just kidding I don't public deadhead, but if I were to do it I would
be sure to wear painter's overalls, an old straw hat, a hardware apron, garden clogs and
carry a bucket of water for any shaping that needed to be done. If approached I would stop
the person before they were actually to me, ask them to step back just a bit and tell me
if they thought I had the shape even all around, asking them to move to the side for a
look from a different angle. Maybe one of those magnetic signs with "Judy Shears" on one
side and "Plant Rescue" on the other, depending upon which activity one is engaged in at
the time. lol lol
I had to flip my sign this morning to "Plant Rescue" ......
A canna bed along side an asphalt parking lot was oh so very crowded. The canna were
coming up outside of the rail fence and encroaching upon the asphalt. It wouldn't be long
before someone came along and tidied up the bed .... why not me. (lol lol lol) I could
not help myself!! I pulled into the parking lot and went inside the business. I asked the
woman working there if the canna bed belonged to the business and she said yes. I then
asked if I could help to tide it up a bit by pulling up some of the unruly plants. She
looked at me like I had lost my mind and said, "sure". I thanked her politely and
proceeded to pull 6 or so up to bring home. Once here I put them in a bucket of water,
they needed a drink in the worst kind of way. They are a short variety and have green
leaves with a good bit of orange specks on a yellow bloom. Oh Lordy it was 102F, maybe
the heat just got to me. lol lol - Judy

Meet our new litter of English Bulldog Puppies, Ms. Reba & Peanut Butter Cookie are
the parents.
Good Morning!! The intense reviving of the puppies and having to bend my neck to look
down on them caused me to have the most gosh awful neck/headache for the remainder of the
day. I never, ever take pain medicine but the pain was so intense I did yesterday and
of course as feared I had a reaction, restless leg syndrome type of nerve reaction in
my arms and legs. It was the first time I had tried the new prescription medication
and the last.
There was a 5th puppy which we opted not to revive. It had an extreme umbilical hernia,
plus a cleft palate. In the past we have saved puppies with these type of deformities, but
never again will we try because the odds are so high against survival. Although Jelly Belly, who
has a cleft palate, lived she is a skinny weird acting little thing who we worry about
constantly. Other one with a cleft palate lived to be 8 weeks old before dying. That
was really rough. In 17 years we've had 4 puppies with the extreme umbilical hernia and only
one has lived, therefore the combination of both deformities was too much to hope for survival.
Isn't this picture precious. It just so happened that I had the pups very close to each other
and when their faces touched there seemed to be a sense of connection so I allowed them to
stay that way for a few minutes.
I have lots to do today since I was out of commission most of yesterday, so I must get to work.
I hope you have a wonderful day. - Judy

We're back home with 4 puppies, 2 males and 2 females, I believe. There is more to the
story, which I will tell later. - Judy
Wednesday - August 15, 2007 7:00 AM
It's "Show Time At The Apollo" (world famous theater where stars are born)!! Ms. Reba ate her
test breakfast at 6 AM, then I gave her a full helpin' just now, within minutes she upchucked
it. This means the same thing as not eating, a sure sign that "she who wants the whole chicken"
is going into labor. Additional factors are this is the 63 day from her first breeding and she
has milk. I don't think there is any need to take her temperature since she hates for her behind
to be messed with. lol lol
As you can see we have no time to mourn for Peri, but must move forward with the other puppies
and Reba going into labor. It will all catch up with me, a few days from now. I'll get grouchy,
then start to cry.
I'll update you when we get back from the vet's office. We're going to pack up and leave soon in
hopes of beating the heat. - Judy
Tuesday - August 14, 2007 7:30 PM
We've been on an emotional roller coaster since the early morning hours. Peri Winkle, Petunia's
male puppy began not being as active as he had been. In a puppy this young that is definitely
a cause for alarm. We tried everything to stop the decline but to shorten the story, late this afternoon he passed away. Our only
consolation is; if it was going to happen better now than when other hearts had also become attached
to him. No matter how hard we try to accept this as part of raising puppies, it hurts every time,
fortunately it's not often, maybe one a year. After he died, I went to bed, had a good cry, fell
asleep and didn't wake up for several hours.
Yesterday's high temperature was 104F and today's was 103F, but relief may be insight, the forecast
for Saturday is only 96F. lol lol Regardless of how long or how often I water my plants, some are
dying and the deer are eating the others. Gracious the deer even ate my Ditch Lilies down to the ground.
At least now I know what happens every few years when there are no blooming lilies in the ditch, the
deer ate them, but they come back so I'm hopeful my Day Lilies will also.
As you can understand I'm not in an upbeat mood, so I'll close for today and will be with you
early tomorrow morning. - Judy
Monday - August 13, 2007 12:30 PM
The predicted high temperature for the next three days is 104F - 106F. I shake my head is
disbelief. Any time the temps get above 80 with the bright sun, we're cautious. Temps
reaching 89F means all the English Bulldogs are brought inside where it is air conditioned
although up to this point if they are confined to a shaded area and there is a good
breeze provided by Mother Nature or giant fans, they like it. Bullies with extremely flat
faces and those with white or light colored fur are the ones most affected by the heat and
should be monitored closely even at lower temperatures, since the dense coat of all
Bullies seems to absorb and hold the heat from the sun rays. Needless to say all the
Bullies in inside. At 2 AM our electricity went off for a few minutes, just long enough to
have me worried the remainder of the night that we might have a power failure during the
next 3 days because there would be such a high demand for electricity.
Reba has my attention this morning. She ate her breakfast but she isn't demanding my food.
She's been sleeping all morning .. well maybe she didn't get any sleep last night either.
As the expression goes "she's as big as the side of the house". If I said that to her I'm
sure she would pout. I have to laugh remembering her Grandmother, Sassy T. Sassy demanded
that she be left with her babies in the pool 24x7, with me by her side sleeping on a
pallet. I was younger then and could do that sort of thing. When she got hungry she would
start talking to me, I'd give her a bowl of food with lots of goodies, she would give me a
pitiful look, lick her lips as if to say, "I'm really hungry but I don't dare move", at
that point she would look down as if to say "see all these babies". So one spoonful at a time,
I fed Sassy, the spoiled brat and best puppy mama ever.
Then there was Pearl, Reba's Great-Grandmother. She was a wonderful mother also. Her first litter
was a learning experience for both of us. The pups were a week old and she was piled up in bed with me
watching TV. She got down and I assumed she was going back to let her puppies nurse. She returned
in just a moment with a pup in her mouth, she had decided to move them onto the bed so she wouldn't have
to leave me to let them nurse or perhaps she was wanting us both to snuggle with them. Pearl, Pearl .. Mama's little
girl.
Well that's my walk down Bully Mama Memory Lane for today. I'm doing to go test Reba to
see if it's "Show Time At The Apollo", a world famous theater, where stars are born. - Judy
Sunday - August 12, 2007 1:00 PM
Poor, poor Reba ... she says she deserves to have anything she wants to eat, she
deserves to sleep in the bed with me ... wait a minute Reba, you can't possibly get
up on the bed and if you do you won't be able to get down. You are not having puppies
in MY bed!!!
Sunday - August 12, 2007 10:30 AM
The "strays that came to stay" are in a snit because we gave their "den" to the Ditch
Puppies. They are sleeping on the front porch instead of the back which is nearer to the
Rose Garden, therefore they didn't see the deer when they come to have Roses and
daylilies for dessert last night. Bob is concerned the Roses will
die, but I think they will be OK, just not robust for the remainder of this year. I have
the sprinkler going in that area now.
Fluffy tried to lead the Ditch Puppies OFF yesterday. She is such a brat. She would have
taken them out into the woods and quickly run home, she's done it before. Once Kate went
missing. We called and called and called to her. Looked everywhere and all of a sudden, I
saw the 3 strays in their den being quiet as church mice. I said, "Bob look at those 3, do
not they look guilty". You could just see Boomer saying to Fluffy, "I told you we should
have waited on her". I told them they better go get the "big girl" and off they ran into
the woods just like they knew what I meant but evidently she wasn't where they left her.
About an hour later she came rambling up the drive saying she was in love with the donkey
that lived across the road. lol lol (I need a nap)
My asthma has been acting up but I've been more intune to
the triggers and have avoided a full blown attack. One indicator for me is breathing
through my mouth. When I realize that is what I'm doing, I stop all activity, come into
the house, immediately sit in front of the window air conditioner and inhale deeply. The cool air going
into my lungs seems to really help. If I'm hot I get cooled off in a hurry. A cool shower
is the best thing I've found.
I've been playing with the puppies we found in the ditch, therefore called Ditch Puppies.
I let them out with me to spread Epsom Salts in
the flower beds and pull up a few weeds. They are so darn cute ... just to watch them
chase and pounce on each other makes me smile. They followed the yarddogs down to the
mailbox but Queen of Hearts & King Biscuit Eater came back when called. Black Jack got
left behind as the "strays that came to stay" crossed the gravel road and went into the
pasture next door. When I called, he looked back at me then ambled around sniffing the
ground. I had to walk all the way down there to get him. I picked him up, tickled his
belly and made cooing sounds which he loves. Had I scolded him for not coming when I
called, it would only have made him leery about coming the next time. I wish I had thought
to have a pocket full of treats to reward the other two when they responded to being called.
Can you tell I've gotten some much needed sleep!!! I napped for a long time yesterday
afternoon and got at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep last night. I was able to sleep
longer because I did very little yesterday to aggravate my neck. I still woke up with a
moderate neck/headache this morning and elevated blood pressure but after being up for 15
minutes the pain left and the pressure returned to normal. At times I have to get out of
bed in the middle of the night and sit up in a chair, if in my sleep I roll over and share Bob's pillow. I stopped
using a pillow 2 years ago.
I'm in an excellent mood this morning and plan on getting much accomplished. I hope
you are having a good morning and that you will have a peaceful Sunday. - Judy
Sunday - August 12, 2007 7:00 AM
Good Morning Everyone!! The top priority from now until Friday is the delivery of Reba's
litter. According to the dates she was bred she could go into labor anytime between now
and Friday. 63 days is the "average" gestation period but we have had Mama Bullies to go
into labor at 59 days, c-section performed and the puppies were just fine. We've also had
one who kept her puppies for 69 days and had us on pins and needles. Today is Reba's 60th
day from the first time she was bred.
I'll have to take pictures of Reba this afternoon you will not believe how big
she is with "babies". Meanwhile I hope you enjoy these older pictures.

By Bob...
Smart Cookie is the BEST mama! When it's time for nursing, she scampers from her crate
to the whelping pool and waits until I put each puppy on her.
She checks to make sure that I've done everything right and settles back and dozes for about an hour.
As the puppies get their fill, they drift off to sleep. Mama licks them clean and all I do is place them in their bucket.
I tell Smart Cookie to "Go Up!" and she scampers back to her crate. She's so good!
PS What Bob did tell you .... I always have treats waiting for them in their crates so they are
happy to "go up".
Saturday - August 11, 2007 9:30 AM
Dog Gone!!! It's so hot and dry the deer have moved into the Rose Garden, stripped
Bob's Roses and ate my new daylilies down to about an inch tall, but we're so tired
taking care of the Ditch Puppies plus being up with the 2 litters of English Bulldog
Puppies (total 7) every 2-3 hours that we're just shaking our heads. Judging by the hoof
size the culprit is a juvenile, probably that cute little thing who's mother brought him
out to see Bob in the Spring, it was so cute our attitude has to be "Live and let live,
plant and replant."
I couldn't resist taking these pictures. I rubbed Peri's chest and he loved it, you could
almost hear him cooing, he yawned and turned his head, loving every second of the
attention. Tiger had her nose under the cover but when I rubbed her all the way down her
little back, she turned around trying to find the source of the pleasure, let my fingers
rub on her for a few seconds then the nose went back under the cover to continue sleeping.
Rose at this point is the most laidback of the three, she let me rub on her without
feeling it necessary to move, or maybe she was enjoying it too much to want to move. lol
lol This is the age I love; warm, cuddly, baby breath puppies.
I'm so tired of breakfast food or maybe I'm just tired period, but I decided to jazz it up
this morning. All the world over people eat "egg pancakes" of some kind: Italian
frittatas, classic French omelette, Iranian Kookoo and Egg Foo Young to name a few. I've
never cared for omelettes although most everyone I know likes them. After scanning several
recipes yesterday, I decided upon creating my own special Egg Foo Young, because my egg
pancakes were going to have gravy, or more aptly called sauce. The end result this morning
was chopped green onions and bits grilled chicken breast added to beaten eggs, seasoned
with salt, pepper and a tiny bit of garlic power. Skillet really hot I fried about a cup
full and when it had set, I turned it over to brown on the other side. The
sauce was chicken bullion, water, corn starch, with a splash of both soy sauce and oyster
sauce, stirred until thickened. It was very good and a delight to the taste buds since they
were expecting scrambled eggs. lol lol

Yesterday was a very full day. We had to have bird food and since I had to make the drive
to Corinth, MS, I did the grocery shopping also, plus pork livers for the dogs, etc. I had
the longest wait to get my hair cut at Wal-Mart, plus I stopped at 4 other places ... all
this in what I suppose was 101 F temperature. I have to be crazy.
I had been on this kick of purging my digestive system and trying to drop a few pounds along the
way. I've been drinking nothing but water for about a week... no juice, tea, wine, etc, and I thought
I was doing very well, but when I got home last night my head was about to blow
off so I drank about 3 oz of a beer that Bob had in his hand, in two gulps. You know beer
always looks refreshing, I suppose because of the commercials, but it actually tastes
nasty to me!! It was ice cold so it did cool me down and that in and of
itself helped make the headache better. Oops I forgot about coffee ... I've got it down
to 1/2 cup with cream and 1 teaspoon of sugar. That is all the sugar I allow myself for
the day. The only other thing sweet I eat is fruit, one or two pieces per day, or part of
a watermelon. I'm eating mostly fruit and raw vegetables with an egg in the morning and a
slice of 7 grain bread. I'm eating a either a salmon patty,
ground beef patty or tuna fish very other day. I do believe I'm feeling better but it's hard to tell
when we're back to not getting any sleep because of newly born puppies, Smart Cookie's litter.
Speaking of puppies, Reba is due to deliver 8/15, she was bred to Peanut Butter Cookie. One of their
pups came in 3rd place in the Detroit Bulldog Rescue Show. Here are links to there other two litters.
I hope you are having a good day and will have a wonderful weekend. - Judy

By Bob... Petunia's Puppy's Eyes are open!
It's always such a great feeling when you see that glimmer of a puppy's eye peeking back at you!
Last night, while feeding Petunia's litter, I noticed that "glimmer" and sure enough, three pairs of eyes were staring back!

I have to talk about the weather since it plays such an important role in our lives. The
high for today is suppose to be 102F with a Real Feel of 112F. Whew doggies!!! I had
planned a trip to the big city to pick up supplies which included beef bones for the dogs,
but not today, maybe not until it cools down considerably.
Bob is wonderful I don't think he got any sleep last night at all. Petunia
woke us up around 1:30 AM barking to let her puppies nurse. Bob said he had just gotten back
in bed so we laid there until 2 AM, decided she wasn't going to give it up so Bob went down.
I stayed awake until 3 AM waiting on him to return. I softly walked downstairs by the light of
a "plant grow light" in the kitchen to find Petunia asleep and Bob laying on the couch. Very quietly
I went back upstairs. The next thing I knew it was 9 AM. I rushed down to "help" with whatever was
left to do. Bob was working away and said he maybe got 11 minutes of sleep. It seems as soon as
I went to sleep Petunia started in again, so he got up and had not been back to bed. He took a 10
minute nap and then was up and going outside to hurriedly get the outside chores completed.
You know what we'll be doing the remainder of the day!!! lol lol - Judy
Wednesday - August 8, 2007 10:00 A.M.
High temperature forecast for today is 101F!! That means all the critters will be
put under a/c, except for the cats. Miss Kitty will not let us catch her and Mr Cat
would die if confined.

Smart Cookie whelped her litter early this morning!
Petunia's puppies nursed from 10:30 PM for an hour. She woke me 2 hours later.
I heard puppy noises coming from the utility room where Smart Cookie had whelped two puppies.
I moved her to the kiddie pool in the kitchen and dried the pups while nuking the Snuggle Safe.
The puppies seemed full term but the scheduled delivery was for a week later.
After warming the pups, I let them nurse for fifteen minutes when Smart Cookie started having contractions.
Puppy number three was delivered, slung, and cleaned and placed in the puppy bucket. After
cleaning up and putting the sheets and towels into the washer, I put clean sheets into the
pool and let mama nurse her three pups. An hour and a half later, we delivered number
four. All seem to be healthy but the first week is so critical. Raising English Bulldogs
is so rewarding but nerve wracking, too! After cleaning up again I let the puppies nurse
for half an hour and then tucked them back into their warm bucket. Smart Cookie is back in
her crate after an exciting and strenuous morning. I took a few pics which I'll post later.
Petunia is now with her puppies while I watch (and keep an eye on Smart Cookie for signs of ANOTHER puppy...)
PS By Judy ... and where was Judy, asleep. I had a bad headache when I woke up and stumbled into the kitchen this
morning for a cup of coffee at 6:30 AM. Noticing a covered dishpan sitting on the counter, I asked Bob what is that,
he said "puppies" to which I replied, "is something wrong". He then told me of the night's adventures.

Dog Days of Summer .... It's 5 o'clock and the temperature is still 95F with 48% humidity!! The
Bullies and I have a hard time breathing when conditions are like this. If a front doesn't
come through the weather forecast is for triple digit temperature this weekend. I hope at least
the humidity doesn't stay as high. The heat index is only 100F, by how it feels out there I would
think it would be higher. The good point to such high temps is I can wash most anything,
hang it on the clothes line for 30 minutes and it will be dry. There is a silver lining to
every cloud, sometimes we just have to look hard. lol lol
Below are GoldFish Pond comparison pictures, the first was taken 5/30/07 and the second on 8/05/07, basically
2 months growing time. Isn't it remarkable!!
Last night I got more sleep than I have since Petunia's puppies were born. We really needed it because
we were getting pretty grouchy. In a couple of days, we'll be caught up and I'll shake the dust off
my tail feathers and have "our gang" doing the Bully Butt Wiggle while going out to potty.
I hope your week started off good and will remain that way. - Judy

Notice: We are experiencing email problems. I have gotten calls from people telling me that the
emails they sent were "non-deliverable". We believe this has something to do with the AT&T
Bell South merger and the protocol used to interface with Earthlink.net. There are a couple
of work arounds that we are considering and should make a decision today.
The other big news at Dogwood Pond this morning is the weather, we're under a severe
weather warning, Heat Advisory, starting at Noon and predicted to continue through next week.
... Heat advisory now in effect from noon today to 7 PM CDT Monday. The heat advisory is
now in effect from noon today to 7 PM CDT Monday. The current spell of hot weather will
continue to worsen today and Monday. Heat index readings will climb to dangerous levels of
around 105 degrees during each afternoon. Temperatures will remain very warm tonight as
well with much of the mid south remaining above 75 degrees.Heat advisories will likely
need to be extended in later weather forecasts for most if not all of the upcoming week.
Bob's medical situation resulted in a tweaking of his medicine and now all appears to be fine.
All the critters here are doing well, we're keeping the English Bulldogs under a/c.
The Ditch Puppies and "strays that came to stay", we feel certain they can handle the heat with plenty of shade
and fresh water, but they will be monitored constantly to insure they are OK.
That is all for today I'm trying to beat the heat in getting our morning chores completed. I hope you are
having a good weekend and will have a peaceful day. - Judy

Puppies we found in a ditch, our Ditch Puppies which are available for adoption .....
OH NO!!!! BigDaddy was holding Queen of Hearts just a few minutes ago and I caught sight
of slightly rumpled hair. Up closer it looked like she had run beside a sprinkler
resulting in water drops on her flank fur .... close inspection reveals it is MANGE. Thank
goodness I've caught it early there are only about 6 rain drop size patches of missing
hair.
Mange is mites that burrow into the skin and cause loss of hair. If ever you see a dog
with fur that looks like it's been "rained on" you can bet it's MANGE, light case of it.
I'm going to treat all of them with Ivomectin, it's much better than the mange dips, far
less possible harmful side affects and should be cleared up in a week or so. Thank goodness
we found the "Ditch Puppies" before this spread, they would have been "put down" for sure.
They're so very, very sweet. - Judy

I've been awake since 1:00 AM waiting to take my turn with Petunia. All was dark downstairs but
I managed to feel my way down the steps and into the kitchen. Popped on the light for just a second
to see that Petunia was awake but not barking. I then went into the living room and did the same so
I could see Bob asleep on the couch, I eased back upstairs.
At 2:30, Petunia started barking, so downstairs I rushed, about that time Bob came awake and told
me it had been exactly 2 hours since the last puppy feeding. He would let them nurse and then come
upstairs, I could come back down later if she was restless ... he would meet me in bed.
When I asked Bob about going to the doctor on Wednesday, he said he was so tired from lack of sleep
that he just couldn't make the effort. We will see how he feels today. - Judy
Wednesday - 08/01/2007 4:30 AM
This morning was a repeat of yesterday in that I got up at 2:00 AM. I woke up to Petunia
barking, Bob was snuggled up to my back, so I went down to be with her. Either she is just
like a little kid, wakes up and finds she is alone so starts barking or she might want to
go out to potty. There was a time when I would have bounded out with her all hours of the
night but not any longer. Last year's snake scare has gotten me to the point that I don't
go outside unless I can see where I'm stepping. It doesn't get light this time of the year
until around 6:00 AM.
Meanwhile I've eaten my fill of red grapes, put the coffee on to perk, started the
Purina Puppy Chow to soak in water, emptied the dishwasher plus started both washing
machine and dryer. I ran out of things to do that wouldn't wake up the other dogs, so I
turned on the radio and I snuck back upstairs. If she makes a sound, I'll hurriedly go
back down. Poor Bob really needs some more sleep.
Yesterday when I went to the big city, I stopped at the butcher's for among other things
pork liver to cook for the Bullies. They only had 3 lbs and wouldn't have more until Thursday
so I got 10 pounds of pork necks for 25 cents a pound. Once home I put them in two big pots and cooked them
until the meat fell off the bone. I tasted it and found it was just as good as a pork roast
so I extracted the bones and made pork gravy to pour over their soaked Purnia Puppy chow. I
should have some happy critters this morning.
I've just been back downstairs because Tunie wanted to make sure her Mama Judy hadn't run away.
I put biscuits on to cook in a timed oven and the critter's (cause all the critters will get some)
pork gravy on low to warm. I'm going to lay
down for just a minute, everything will be fine if I drift off to sleep. - Judy
Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and
other creature for the last 55 years, we will have to assume she was five years old
before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing
and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She
had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight
yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone content that the dogs would protect
her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed
behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life
changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and
became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were
robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the
country and her first love, dogs....smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
