Puppy Gal Welcomes You To

Judy's Journal....

I started this feature for friends and family to answer their "What's going on?" emails, therefore, I probably tell too much, but you are welcome to laugh, cry and sigh with us.

I've been having mouse problems today. I've killed two already and the third one "just ate my Jack and died". I'm taking about computer mouse problems and it is the craziest thing. I can restart my computer and the mouse will last until I try to decompress by playing a game of Free Cell, then it dies leaving my computer totally useless ... perhaps I need to find another way to decompress. That reminds me that "blue pet rat" sure was cute and I could pet it. Bob's only comment was "it would start barking for special food like the dogs do". lol lol

A big Welcome Back to Georgine, this is what she has to say .....
Sent: Friday, April 27, 2007 7:44 PM

I'm back.......Good news, this time the radioactive pill worked and all of the thyroid and cancer is gone. I had my scan last week and we were holding our breath till we received the results.

I'm still having a bit of trouble with the nausea, dizziness and fatigue but Thank God that too will pass.

Thank you all for all of your Love and Support, you have no idea how much each and everyone of you mean to me.

God Bless You and Keep You Always, Love Georgine

Bessie Smith, pictured to the right, was bred to Guitarman, picture left below, this morning. They should make some beautiful puppies!!

Juliet's puppies have been fed 3 times already this morning and it seems as if I'm spending all my time with them. She was letting them nurse and I was 5 feet away glancing at her constantly but trying to get a few things done, when I made the wrong chore choice. I started peeling boiled eggs and immediately she was out of the pool and sitting beside me wanting not just one egg, but all of them!! I told her to "go up" and then put an egg in the crate with her, waited 5 minutes and let her back out to finish feeding the "babies".

The "babies" are two weeks old now, so it's time for them to be given preventive wormer, every two weeks. Note: Since we worm all of our critters once a month we don't encounter this but for anyone taking in rescue puppies or getting one elsewhere. If a dog passes worms when given wormer, they need to be wormed again for the next three days to insure all worms are killed. Since there are new wormers developed daily be sure to read the instructions on the container or verify my statement with your vet.

I'm finished with my lunch, egg salad sandwich so it's back to work for me. - Judy

Friday - 04/27/2007 7:00 PM

Bob's helper showed up unexpectedly at 6:30 AM so we've had a busy day. We get so far behind with everything when our attention must be given to the puppies 24x7. I've spoiled Juliet because it is so important that she eat well, so now everytime I enter the kitchen she thinks it's "boiled egg or Bulldog Mama Milkshake time". lol lol

The flowers are beautiful but the weeds are getting ahead of me in the worst kind of way. When I take Cherry out to potty, I walk around looking at the blooms, only to end up pulling out a few weeds, she likes to help and actually she's pretty smart about it. She goes after whatever I'm pulling out, but I'm afraid the weed juice might be harmful ... Bob laughs at me. He says I wash their bowls then put them in the dishwasher, only to have them sniff, lick and mouth everything that's weird in the yard or that the "strays" have drug up to the porch.

Bob just finished letting the puppies nurse, so we've got 3 hours until we do it again. We're tired so we're not doing much meanwhile. Have a Good Night, Judy

Thursday - 04/26/2007 9:30 AM

It's just 62F but the humidity is 94% so it "weighs you down", meaning breathing is more difficult, therefore doing anything is more difficult. I hadn't thought of that phrase in a long time, but it certainly applies this morning.

My plans are to take more pictures of the puppies this morning and post them either late this afternoon or tonight. (Note: they were too wiggly only got this picture) I believe we now have the programming code in place to prevent copying of the puppy pictures by scam artists. Whew!!.

If you are a praying person please include my friend Twyla who is undergoing a cancer treatment today. Thanks, Judy

Wednesday - 04/25/2007 10:30 AM

The puppies are doing GREAT. Their eyes are beginning to open and they are stretching out those legs, they will be walking soon. Jackson the largest pup has been reserved.

It's 70F and rain is on it's way so the humidity is 78%, making tough for me to breath, but the plants need a good soaking. I don't know why but Mother Nature's Rain is so much better for the plants than water from a hose, city or well water, doesn't matter. "Water from a hose keeps them alive but rain makes them thrive".

We were taking a brunch break now it's back to doing chores. - Judy

Tuesday - 04/24/2007 3:30 PM

Iris, puppies and baby bird all make me smile. Now if someone would come clean the house and do the yardwork, Bob and I could sit back and enjoy.

Tuesday - 04/24/2007 11:00 AM

Bob took a much better picture of Nappy so I replaced the one below. I hope it makes you smile.

Tuesday - 04/24/2007 8:30 AM

"Life on the run" for us has a totally different meaning than being on the run from something, we're running to get everything done.

I found a great website which gives information on "raising baby cockatiels". www.cockatielcottage.com I asked Bob if he wanted me to find someone to give it to and he said, "no it's my first baby cockatiel". The last thing we need is another critter to care for and about. We haven't discussed the word "first" yet. I want to change the word to "only". lol lol

These are pictures of Casper, he likes motley looking females or maybe since they were motley looking the cockatiel breeder wanted to get rid of them, therefore told me they were males.

I'll be back later with more pictures of Iris and or whatever. - Judy

Monday - 04/23/2007 8:30 PM

The freeze that swept through our area earlier this month, destroyed the buds on many of our Iris but fortunately some had not put up their scapes yet. I know that didn't make much sense but I couldn't help the wording. Maybe in the morning it will come to me how to "fix" it. lol

Monday - 04/23/2007 2:30 PM

Pictures of Cherry on her outing yesterday. The lady with Cherry is my friend Bonnie.

Monday - 04/23/2007 1:30 PM

Meet Nappy, when it was first born all you could see was wiggly fuzz. Now when it isn't having a hissy fit it's dozing off, therefore the name Nappy. It hisses like a snake. We never meant to have a clutch of cockatils that is why we got all males, or so we thought. Best guess we have on his hatch date is April Fool's Day. We don't think any of the other eggs are fertile, but then again we know nothing about birthing birds. lol lol We use a sheet in the bottom of their cage, for us it is easier to clean

Sunday - 04/22/2007 9:00 AM

I told Bob it wasn't nice to laugh at me for being in the shower with my socks still on. What's this with me and socks anyway. Then he questioned who taught the newly hatched cockateil how to throw a hissy fit. I suppose he'll name it "Judy". lol lol Good Morning - Judy

Juliet & Jazzman's 4/13/07 Litter

They are AKC, $1200 and should be ready for their new homes June 8, 2007. I will begin taking deposits to reserve them on Wednesday. To be fair to everyone I must review the applications I have in my inbox and catch up on my emails first.
Getting a puppy, the way it works.

Milt Jackson
John Lewis
Connie Kay
Heather (named after Percy Heath)

The pictures of the puppies, one week old as of Friday, have been taken and their names have been chosen, now to edit, upload and code their display. This last part will have to wait until this afternoon. It's relatively cool outside just now but the high is supposed to be 80F which is a little too warm for me to work in the afternoon sun, so I'll be back. - Judy

11:00 AM

These pups are named after legendary Jazz Musicians

Here is ......
Jackson named after Milt Jackson
He is the largest of the litter and also has a large head. At this point, they change quickly, he is the best looking.

Lewis, named after John Lewis
Lewis has the best coloring of the litter.

Kay, named after Connie Kay
She is the smallest of the litter, melts your heart doesn't she!!

Heather, named after Percy Heath
Doesn't she make you smile!!!

12:30 AM

The lighting on the pictures was good so I only had to "cut" out the portion I wanted to post, give it a name and uploaded them to the server. I through now!! - Judy

Friday - 04/20/2007 2:30 PM

We went into town to get pre-emergent, prevents seeds from sprouting and I ran into a great sale on nursery pots. Big ones like trees come in were $2.50 (available online for $7-8 each plus shipping) so I bought all they had - 17 of them. I going to plant my tomatoes, cucumbers, squash etc in them. I'm so very pleased. Also they had vermiculite for $1 a bag and orchid mix for $1, they are small bags but they normally cost $5-7 each. I got a total of 15 bags, again all they had. They will be great to mix with my potting soil for house plants. The Co-op has done away with their nursery and evidently found these in storage.

I wanted to grow my vegetables, but knew I couldn't bend over or get down on my knees that much so these pots are perfect .... especially since I bought so many seeds. lol lol

Bob thought I had lost my mind when I told him to go inside and pay for all of it while I watched it to make sure no one else got them. lol lol Then when I explained my plan he thought it was great.

Puppies and Juliet are doing GREAT. I'm going to make decisions on the applications I've received, take updated pictures of the puppies and then start allowing people to reserve them. Right now I'm going to bed, very tired, if the young man who is to "help" tomorrow doesn't come, then I'll work on my emails and applications. If he does come, it will be Sunday before I get to them. I'm guessing by Wednesday I will have everything ready to start taking deposits.

Have a wonderful weekend. - Judy

Thursday - 04/19/2007 2:30 PM

The Bullies are some kind of upset over the young man who is helping Bob. He works a few days in the Spring then in the Fall to help us catch up on the heavy tasks. He called last night to see if we had any work for him to do. The sawmill where he is working is closed today. He also may come back on Saturday. Regardless we are thankful to have his help. Our first guard, the strays that came to stay, were fine with him after a few minutes, but the Bullies don't like having strangers around and every loud noise is an excuse to bark. lol lol

I'm off to clean the kitchen floors, so much to do and only one of me. - Judy

Wednesday - 04/18/2007 9:00 PM

Bob fed the puppies, then we raced to the van and went into town. Each of us had a "list" as we charged into the stores going our separate ways rounding up supplies. I ran into a deal in the meat department of Wal-Mart corn beef brisket marked down to $.96 per pound so I grabbed 7 packages and thought about getting all they had, but didn't have the time to consider it fully before heading for the canned juice isle, dairy department and produce. Meanwhile Bob was loading his basket full of clorox, clothes washing detergent and a new coffee pot. (The heating element went out on ours day before yesterday.) I caught up with him and off we went after SOCKS, I swore I was throwing out all the contents of both our sock drawers so we had to get new ones. We did take a minute to examine the lime green ladies underware with matching bras and stocked not 5 feet away were Pamama Hats. Too bad they weren't the same color or I would have thrown all of it in the basket as I passed. I think the neon pink was my favorite!! (lol lol this is my attempt at humor)

I'm tired now, Good Night - Judy

Wednesday - 04/18/2007 2:00 PM

The puppies are 5 days old now and growing like weeds; wiggling around looking for dinner. I've located articles which gives great information regarding newborn puppy care, go to wwww.peteudcation.com do a search on "Newborn Puppy Care".

We are able to exhale now since they have made it this far, but can't relax for things can still happen. I believe it was at 2 weeks of age that the cyst erupted in the back of Noel's eye and cause the right side of her body to be deformed. Jelly had a cleft palate to start and Bob spent so much of his time and energy tube feeding her. Both of these Bullies lived because we made the decision to do what we could so that they could live as long as possible and be as happy as possible. However, I would never recommend our course of action to another person, it has taken a toll on both of us.

One of us must go into town for supplies. We're out of milk, bread, eggs, evaporated milk for Juliet, etc. The weather is great, 67F wind at 3 mph, 8 mph gusts, cloudy with 40% chance of rain but none is showing on the radar. It would be a good day for planting the bulbs I bought earlier but we're too tired for that much activity.

Before I got sick yesterday I rearranged the kitchen to accommodate the pool of puppies, so that I could watch them while working. Juliet is a wonderful mother and will only need us hovering over her for a few more day, but we will still have to be close at hand. Charlotte (old, old retired breeder) got out then jumped back in the pool with a 2 week old litter of puppies, when she jumped back in she landed on a pup and he almost didn't recover. BUT Charlotte's nature isn't near a gentle as Juliet.

Have a good day - Judy

Tuesday - 04/17/2007 5:00 PM

I had a full out allergic reaction to pollen, down to the point of my throat becoming rigid. Scared the pee-doodle out of me for sure.

I didn't feel good but my temperature was normal and blood pressure was well within normal reading. I told Bob I had to go lay down for awhile, within an hour it struck. I felt my throat going rigid, jumped out of bed, went downstairs and drank about 3 oz of wine, to relax the muscles, but it was of little comfort. I drank another 3 oz and took antibiotics ... slowly the grip on my throat lessened. I'm shaking not only my head, but all over wondering what happened to me.

Bob, thinks it is the dust and pollen that blew inside the house during the last few days of high winds which I was trying to clean up. 50 mph winds bring all sorts of pollen into the house while we are opening doors to take "our gang" out to potty.

Tuesday - 04/17/2007 8:00 AM

By now you know the drill in reference to putting the puppies with Juliet to nurse, so I'll leave out the details. I swear we feel "hung over" from the disruption of our sleep. We're going to have to take turns today taking crash naps.

Cherry is use to Mr. Cat, but Miss Kitty isn't as friendly and therefore an unknown to Cherry. Late yesterday afternoon, Miss Kitty came to the back door to tell me she wanted something special to eat. She does this by stretching out on the door and will do a long scratch down the frame if necessary to get my attention. Yesterday she got Cherry's attention. I do not know what Cherry said when she barked but Juliet came out of the pool where she was feeding the puppies, so fast that Bob had to scramble to protect the puppies and if it had not been for the door being closed she would have gone after Miss Kitty. In the process of doing this she stepped on one of the puppies and made it cry.

I wrote all the above so that you could understand that most nursing mother will display protective instincts in regard to her pups. Juliet as the old saying goes "will not bite a biscuit". She never barks or growls at anything, unless she has a newly born litter of puppies, then we have to be really careful about her environment in regard to things, animals or people who could be viewed as a threat to them. The word "could" is operative here, just because we don't think there is a threat does not mean that a new mother will think likewise, remember no matter how much we love them, they are dogs.

I'm so hungry I dreamed of fresh rolls and hot buttered cornbread last night. Seems to me my brain could have thought up something better. I'm off to cook breakfast. - Judy

Monday - 04/16/2007 7:30 PM

Bob and I moved all the plants out onto the porch a little earlier, watered them all, took stock of what was there, walked the yard area to see what plants made it, took the covers off some hosta and surveyed the weed control that did not work. I started pulling up a vine gone crazy and immediately tiny, tiny ticks started crawling up my arms, I raced for the water hose and then into the house to change clothes.

Here are some pictures of the lasagna, a large serving from which Bob & Juliet shared. lol lol He was hungry but the puppies needing feeding so I nuked him some lasagna and Juliet demanded part of it. I reminded him it would cause both she and the puppies to have diarrhea ... still they smacked away. There is also a picture of what was left of a pan of brownies I made for him earlier today, Juliet pouted because she couldn't have any. Dogs are allergic to chocolate, give in large amounts it can kill. Enjoy the pictures, I'll post in the morning. (I don't know why Bob wanted you to see his lasagna and brownies, but it was little to ask of me.) - Judy

Monday - 04/16/2007 9:30 AM

Oh Mercy, I didn't get to sleep until after Midnight, I was tired but not sleepy so I laid in bed reading a book. I thought the lasagna tasted "strong", Bob thought it was the best I've ever made. I tried using diced canned potatoes (must be cooked more) to make the potato salad which turned out well but the "indian relish" has a strong taste, Bob thought it was great. Oops my "taste" must be off, do adrenaline surges do that??

The puppies are nursing well, the time between nursings is a tad longer, because they are getting more milk into their digestive system as they develop. The picture is of 2 puppies from Juliet's last litter, December 2003.

I'm off to do chores - Judy

Sunday - 04/15/2007 7:30 PM

Taxes filed, puppies fed, "our gang" fed walked etc, bedding washed, potato salad fixed, lasagna cooked and in the refrigerator ready to eat whenever .... we're off to take a nap.

Sunday - 04/15/2007 3:00 PM

I received this picture in an email today and had to post it. To me it is the cutest ever!!!

Bully & Baby 4/15/07

Baby is now crazy about taking baths - and Mr. M is not thrilled about it. We were getting his tub ready (remember he likes warm baths with bubbles) and she climbed in like a little monkey.

Sunday - 04/15/2007 1:30 PM

We've been under a High Wind Advisory and it just hit us hard!!! "A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 25 to 39 mph are expected... or gusts will range between 40 and 57 mph." You would not believe how these trees are whipping around.

Note On Puppies: For the first 3-4 days or until the umbilical cord tissue is healed, we do not allow the mother to stimulate the puppies to "go to the bathroom" or to clean them. Therefore the burden falls upon us. After they are finished eating, if they have not done this, then we give them a gentle washing with warm cloth, the material of which is similar to a diaper blanket, but cut in tissue size squares. It's been 48 hours since this all began!!

Note On Bully Mother: The second day after the birth of the puppies. We give the mother a shot of Oxytocin, to insure the expelling of all afterbirth and another of Vitamin B-Complex. If you do a search on www.peteducation.com for Oxytocin it warns of it's use. These warnings however apply to "during the birthing process", not afterward.

Sunday - 04/15/2007 Noon

For the 3 AM & 7 AM feedings, I could have sworn I heard one of the puppies all the way upstairs which prompted serious concern over what could be causing one of them to cry that loud. Around 11 AM, I was in the kitchen fixing brunch when I heard the puppies start to fret and immediately Cherry let out a squeak that sounded just like them but much louder, instantly Juliet who had been asleep was alerted and barked to be with them. Cherry is the "puppies are awake alarm for Juliet". It's that cute!!!

Helpful hint to Millie, you will need to set your alarm clock for every 2 1/2 hours at least for the first week or until Pebbles starts hearing their cry and barks to be with them. When I was younger, I would curl up in the pool with both the Bully Mom and the pups so than any movement would wake me up, but I'm a real light sleeper, a heavy sleeper could do as much damage as the mother in regard to mashing the pups. Problem is if they aren't put with their mother immediately after they wake up, they will nurse on each other and this can cause an umbilical hernia because it isn't totally healed.

Juliet's Pups 4/15/07 Sunday - 04/15/2007 8:15 AM

We're foggy-headed this morning, after puppy feedings around 10 PM, 3 AM and then Juliet sounded the alarm again at 7 AM. (Note: actual feeding time varies from 1 to 1 1/2 hours then the pups are stimulated to go potty and cleaned. Afterward the Snuggle Safe discs are heated in the microwave, the bedding is changed out and Juliet is taken outside on a lead for a potty break. Therefore considerable more time is involved in the puppy feedings.)

It's cold (39F), windy (gusts to 15 MPH), humidity of 86% and cloudy here this morning. It almost looks like we're going to get a storm any moment, therefore the critters don't want to go out to potty. BUT I definitely know the silver lining to these clouds .. they aren't spitting snow. lol

Juliet's Pups 4/15/07 Juliet's Pups 4/15/07
I'm trying to give you all as much detail as possible about this litter especially for Millie and because many people have asked for additional information on having a litter of pups.

I'll be back in a few minutes to post pictures of the puppies. - Judy

Saturday - 04/14/2007 7:00 PM

Juliet gave the headsup bark at 6:30. I was still working on emails so Bob went to let the puppies nurse and then walk "our gang". Cherry has started barking for attention. Oops, our total focus has been the puppies, we'll have to make more time for her. I'm going to chill out in a few minutes and take a nap. Don't be surprise if there isn't another update until in the morning. Bob can go without a lot of sleep, but I can't. Next feeding time will be approximately 9:30 PM.

PS The cakes are delicious!!! I use 2 cups of Sam's Choice Tropical Trail mix, cut the larger pieces into smaller ones, 6 or so chopped prunes, cup of raisins, yellow cake mix, 4 eggs, 1/2 cup softened butter, brown sugar to taste, maybe a cup, cup or so of sour cream and add buttermilk or milk a little at a time until I have a nice thick batter but stirrable. I use 2, 5x9 glass loaf pans with about 2 tablespoons melted butter in the bottom. Split the batter between the two and cook until done. Probably 375F for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, depending upon your oven and how thick your batter ended up being. I actually just toss it all together and it never comes out the same way twice. If it's too dry I make a Jack Daniel's sauce to pour over it. After a day or two the flavors mingle and it becomes sweeter. It makes a great breakfast treat when you're on the run like we are right now.

Saturday - 04/14/2007 4:30 PM

Third feeding of today is complete. Bob has taken a shower and laid down for a nap. Juliet will let us know loud and clear when the puppies start to whine and we'll go downstairs to let them nurse.

I'm answering emails and tweaking the website just a little. I must clear out my Inbox!!! Meanwhile I need to mention, that I have started giving Juliet her daily "Bully Mama Milkshake"; a can of Pet Evp Milk, a can of water, 2 tablespoons Karo light syrup, 2 raw eggs well beaten. This is to help prevent "milk fever" and aid her in producing milk, plus we give the nursing mothers Pet-Cal supplements also. After they are breed we start give them Folic Acid to help prevent the puppies from having cleft palates. They are fed a puppy formulated kibble for the duration of their pregnancy and while they are nursing. Whew!!! - Judy

Saturday - 04/14/2007 2:44 PM

Third feeding in progress via Bob. It stopped raining so he has walked "our gang" and completed many outside chores. I've cooked him two dried fruit and nut loaf cakes, similar to Christmas Fruit Cakes but so much easier. Third load of bedding in the washer and another washer load from the covered dog run machine has been put into the dryer, gosh the first 48 hours with a new mother are so messy, plus the yard area was flooded by recent rains so we and the critters are tracking in leaves, mulch and such. I've had to sweep the kitchen floor for the second time this morning. I've also made up a "form response" to all the emails I'm getting, here is a copy ....

A brief overview of your recent communication indicates one or more of the following responses are in order. Please forgive me for not sending a more personal reply, but we are extremely busy with "our gang" and Spring chores.

The information presented on my website is my opinion only, you will have to make your own decisions and I have no additional input to offer.

If your English Bulldog is NOT one of mine and you are having a health issue, wanting to breed or have other questions not available on my website, please contact your breeder and/or a veterinarian. Valuable information can be obtained by doing a "search" on the particulars at www.peteducation.com.

If your English Bulldog is one of mine, sending you this email was a mistake so please let me know.

We presently have a new litter of puppies born April 13, 2007, however it is much too early to discuss their placement or provide additional information, i.e. price, release date etc. The first week of their life is critical and demands our total attention. Sometime we laugh and sometime we cry, as with human babies, not all the time do they survive. The parents are Juliet & Jazzman and you can follow their progress on my journal. www.puppygal.com/judys_journal.html

Saturday - 04/14/2007 11:30 AM

Second puppy feeding of the morning accomplished, they nursed for about an hour. With his hand on Juliet to be sure he knew instantly if she moved, Bob watched a movie on DVD, that is until I turned on my favorite radio gardening program.

Dishes are in the dishwasher, kitchen floors swept, two loads of bedding have been washed and dried, plus another load put in the dryer from the dog run washing machine. I wash my hands a hundred times a day and can't stand to see or smell the afterbirth so into the washer they go to soak until I have a full load which doesn't take long because I put down 2 sheets which are folded into quarters. Juliet is in a crate to keep her from trying to get in with the puppies or mess up the house with her discharge, so when she goes into the pool her bedding is washed and then after the puppies have finished nursing the pool bedding is washed.

I have a bad headache, Bob is tired and we are expecting a storm shortly. - Judy

Saturday - 04/14/2007 9:00 AM

Fretful puppies so Juliet started to bark ... I warmed a Snuggle Safe and brought it upstairs only to discover Bob had put the one he heated for them after they finished nursing, on the bottom of the box and they couldn't feel the warmth through all the layers. Now all is quiet for a few minutes, but only a few minutes because it will be feeding time again soon.

Saturday - 04/14/2007 7:30 AM

I just pulled myself out of bed because I like to have never gotten to sleep last night. We had heavy rain with thunder and lighting all night long it seemed. Once I'm up past 11 PM it is almost impossible for me to get to sleep. Once awake, I called out to Bob and he came upstairs carrying the box of "babies" he had just finished feeding. He immediately crawled into bed and as soon as his head hit the pillow he was asleep.

Melanie and Cherry's reactions to the "babies"; all the time Bob was at the vet's office, Cherry would make a whispery sound to let me know she was anxious about the one here with us. New born puppies fretting or whimpering is not unusual and I could almost hear Cherry say, let me nuzzle and "wick" (lick) him to make him better. Cherry is such a dear, sweet puppy. Melanie kept whining like she had no idea what was going on but she wanted a closer look at least and maybe she might condescend to try to console it. More than anything she wanted to know where "her daddy" was. lol lol

All the puppies seem to be doing well this morning, of course I didn't have the chance to discuss them with Bob so I don't know if he had any concerns. I'm off to clean up the kitchen, the pool bedding and make some breakfast. - Judy

Friday - 04/13/2007 6:00 PM

I've been busy taking care of some family matters the last few day which drained me of energy. Bob and I decided it was a good idea that I just take it easy, doze off and on all day so I would be raring to go tomorrow.

About 1:30 PM I hear Bob coming up the stairs and a newborn puppy screaming. Juliet had fooled us. She had eaten around Noon and we thought we were good for the day and tomorrow would be "the day", but nope she started on her own. Bob had the pup in his hand without covering, so I told him to give it to me. He said what should we do, he was stressed at finding the pup knowing all too well that the next one could get stuck in the birth canal and we might lose the other pups. I told him to grab her and take off to the vet's, I would clean up the puppy, the mess and call the vet's to let them know he was on the way for an emergency c-section.

We now have 4 chunky puppies, 2 males and 2 females. The father is Jazzman and they will do him proud. Say a prayer, the first week is critical. - Judy

Friday - 04/13/2007 7:00 PM

Juliet and her puppies Bob had picked up Juliet and brought her into the house, she was just awaking up and the puppies weren't asking to be fed so we waited until just a little while ago to fed them for the first time. Meanwhile Juliet was in the pool with several layers of sheets both under and over her. Coming out from under the aesthesia, she was chilled just as with humans so I had a doggy heating pad under the pool but on top of the comforter upon which the pool was placed. Also I warmed her cover sheets in the dryer before placing them on her.

The puppies were in the cardboard box provided by the vet's clinic because Bob didn't take time to find a plastic container for them. I placed a layer of t-shirts on the bottom, then Snuggle Safe disks heated in the microwave to the point of warm but not too hot to hold comfortably in my hand, another layer of t-shirts to insure they wouldn't get too hot but that a gentle heat would last a little longer. Part of the box does not have a Snuggle Safe so if they become too hot they can go to that space or crawl on top of the t-shirt I laid over them.

Juliet and her puppies 4 hours later and we're about to take a nap. Both Juliet's and the puppies bedding have been changed out. Since we bring the mothers home as soon as their vital signs are strong, afterbirth expelling can be a bit repulsive for those who are not experienced. The afterbirth will continue to be expelled for a couple of days in most cases. It is extremely important that all afterbirth is expelled, if not an infection can set up which could have a severe negative impact, i.e. sterilization or hysterectomy. The puppies have been fed twice, nursing about 25 minutes the first time and an hour the second time. The first time didn't satisfy them as much as we thought it should, so the next feeding was 1 1/2 hours later. They are allowed to nurse until they stop and fall asleep. A point that I must make here is a mother with a newborn litter can't be allowed to be alone with the pups for a minute, because she might roll over and mash one. It's like flipping a coin, she might and then again she might not, but our hearts are too soft to take the chance. It's not the money, it would be the death of a living being that would cause us pain.

I'm still up with the puppies. I laid down but one of them keeps crying in it's sleep which of course I don't know until I get up to check on it.

Friday - 04/13/2007 Midnight

Bob woke up and took the puppies downstairs for their feeding. He said he would sleep on the couch with the puppies in their box beside it the remainder of the night so that I could get some sleep. After about 3 days of this we start to get grouchy and I'm sure you can see why. - Judy

from Bob...

Click image to enlarge... This is Bubba, a very old English bulldog, who is living his second childhood! We don't know exactly how old Bubba is but we're guessing thirteen plus... A couple of months ago, Bubba was slowing down so I started giving him an aspirin a day which did help a little bit. Then I moved his sleeping crate next to one of the female bullies coming into heat. Bingo! Whereas Bubba would laze away the hours waiting for lunch, now he roams the yard far and wide looking for his true love! And today, the ol' feller climbed the steps (five) up to the side door to the dog barn instead of using the ramp that he had been using. Talk about new lease on life!

Click image to enlarge... This is Jelly Roll. She has filled out and is very active. She and Sweet T. Pie help me clean up the sleeping areas and outdoor pens-- I let them think that they are helping...

Mercy, this freeze has surely been devastating for farmers and gardeners alike. All the work undone in a couple of nights of low temps. We're all suppose to learn a lesson from this, Good Friday is the key, don't move out house plants or plant Spring & Summer crops until Good Friday, BUT I got away with it for 2 years running so I'll probably take the chance again.

As usual, when I'm stressed I cook. I made a big pot of vegetable soup and defrosted a loaf of French Bread, great combination.

My heart is heavy right now but I'll snap out of it in a day or so and post all the pictures I've been sent from the new owners of "our babies". - Judy

Subject: I take the Pill tomorrow
Hi Everyone,
After much confusion I am going down to U.H. tomorrow to take the radioactive pill. It seems that no one had either sent or recieved the fax on Thurs. Scans have to be lined up after the pill in a certain order and I cannot drive or take public transportation. Larry will take me and hope that all is well. Dr. on Thurs. was shocked at my counts, it is suppose to take at least 6 weeks....they need to listen to their patients more, I knew that I was over ready and beginning to fade fast. This morning the big concern was that my kidneys might fail. Also since I am completely yellow they are checking the liver. I had a ultra sound done last week by my primary care Dr. since my Endro Dr. did not call back after a week. They found a cyst on the liver and will take care of that when the treatment for this is over, in about 4 to 6 months. I really did not expect that since I am such a big drinker....(maybe a glass of wine at New Years)....Oh well one thing at a time. Today is the last day I will be able to be on the computor so I want to Thank everyone for their Love, Prayers and Support. I will be back in about 4 to 6 weeks as soon as I'm not glowing in the dark anymore. Love You All Lots as always Georgine

Thoughtful Easter Sunday!!
At 7:30 AM it was 26F on the back porch. I refused to go out into the "yard" area to survey the damage. It's suppose to go down to 28F tonight and 36F tomorrow night. There will be time enough then for a sad heart.

Meanwhile, Easter Sunday caused me to take a look at the world around us which really saddened me. I just want to take all the children in the war torn areas and bring them here to us so we can make them smile. I would like to help them to understand their world but the conflicts are beyond our understanding.

I think the world as a whole should make it a disgrace to defile, destroy or otherwise harm the religious structures, paintings or symbols of any religion. Any group of people regardless of who they are should be hunted down by the countries of this world and severely punished. My heart goes out to those who have had their religious symbols destroyed, by madmen who do not care about their fellow human being.

I pray for peace and understanding .... Judy

Melanie, rescued German Sheperd Update on Melanie .. She is adapting well to our environment. She has formed a serious attachment to Bob, which pleases us both. She is no longer looking for her "human" the way she was ... well other than him that is. She has a STRONG desire to be with him and if she sees him outside without her, she starts to whine. We are going to wait just a little longer before starting her heartworm treatments other than the monthly Ivomec. We wanted her to obey commands etc first and to trust us completely before we put her through that. I don't know if I mentioned it before or not, but early on I got to thinking maybe she was deaf or had impaired hearing. She is not deaf, she was using selective hearing before, but now follows voice commands very well, considering the length of time she's been with us.

Update on the cold blast coming our way ... Wednesday, we brought in 68 plants from the porches, it was suppose to drop down to 32F but only got down to 33F here. We have a prediction of 22F for Saturday, with the possibilities of frost and snow. Don't even mention Global Warming to me!! On Thursday we brought in approximately 50 Brugmansia ... @#$@$@#$ (that is not cussing it's frustration) Can you imagine, the Iris that are about to bloom, the tiny peaches on the trees, the hostas some up and out all the way while others are just up about 4-5 inches, the azalea blooms .. all of this will be killed by the freeze this weekend. Right now it's 49F with winds at 2 MPH with gusts up to 12 MPH and there is no reason to think the wind will die down for the weekend. All this sounds so bleak ... but I'm always looking for the silver lining in all situations so I'll keep looking. At least we got to enjoy the earlier Spring weather, that sounds pretty near to a silver lining doesn't it. - Judy

Bob is hopeful that he finally got the telephone line "fixed". lol lol That one poor rose bush has been dug up several times now. This time I suggested that he relocate it but I'm not about to ask if he did. lol lol

The big news from here is our weather forecast starting tonight calls for lows of 24-33F for the remainder of the week... that means all the plants in pots have to be moved back into the house and all the tender plants which have sprouted will have to be covered with a sheet, flower pot or whatever I can find. The Iris buds which are about to open will also be killed and the foliage on the prennials will be killed back to the ground. Our peach trees are loaded with tiny fruit, which will be killed, meaning this same thing will be happening to growers so there will be less locally grown food available this summer in many parts of the country.

I know it will be hard to find the silver lining in this cloud, but I'm not going to quit trying. Make the most of today no matter what you will be doing. - Judy

HeadsUp - Pictures of Cherry Cookie have been stolen and posted to another website obviously bogus or they wouldn't have to steal our pictures.

Monday - 04/02/2007 Around Noon

It all started when Bob finally got around to planting the new rose bushes ... he loves roses. There was a problem in deciding where to plant them because they are sun lovers and most of our yard area is shaded by giant Oak trees. Spot selected he hurriedly dug the holes, ran into some tough tree roots but chopped his way through them, added fertilizer in the bottom then potting soil mixed with the original clay soil he removed, in went the plants and soil around them, packed down, watered, mission accomplished. It wasn't until the next day we discovered our telephone line was dead. We didn't have time to deal with it so left the problem to be resolved the next day which is when the parrot escaped, etc.

Oops Bob remembered those "tough roots". lol lol He dug up the roses, repaired the cut in the wire and all was well. Sunday morning there was an intermittent problem, enough so that a friend told me the phone was out of order just about the time we were walking out the door to meet another friend for lunch. He still hasn't gotten around to "fixing" it, too much to do that has to be done ASAP before the growing season overtakes us ... weeds, weeds, weeds.

Georgine we're sending positive thoughts and praying your appointment today will go well. I will send you an email later, hopefully today. Please give me an update on your "medical condition"!

I've got a full load of "things to do" today, so I best get back to work. - Judy

PS Right now the telephone line is working and hopefully this entry will be updated immediately.

Judy is a PuppyGal and always has been -- bringing in strays, thrown away puppies and other creature for the last 55 years, we will have to assume she was five years old before she brought in her first one. When she was four years old she went missing and hours later they found her under her Grandparent's old country farmhouse. She had snuggled up next to their big white dog and fell asleep. She and their eight yard dogs roamed the 100 acre farm, everyone content that the dogs would protect her. While other little girls played with dolls, PuppyGal and the dogs followed behind her Papa as he plowed the fields, feed the goats or milked the cows. Life changed, Papa passed away, she lived full time in the city, got a good education and became an executive for a National Corporation. One day she decided they were robbing her of her life so she told them "I'm Through Now" and returned to the country and her first love, dogs....smashed faced, snorting Bulldogs.
