Click Here - Daily Nursery News By BobWatch them grow and read all about it!! Friday - 4/29/2005 - 2:00 P.M. CDT The sun was out early this morning but it's been cloudy and overcast since. I'm lazy, just plain lazy today, so I'm not going to do anything but what is absolutely necessary. - Judy Good Morning!!Hopefully today I will review and make decisions on the pending Applications. Once that task is accomplished, I will move forward with Reserving the puppies. It's breezy and rainy this morning, but between showers, I made 'our gang' get up and go out to potty. Jazzman didn't care if it was raining, but Jeb was almost shaking his head in disgust. He loves water but wants control over it getting on him. lol lol If you're feeling low, put a smile on your face and confuse everyone!!! - Judy Yesterday was rainy and extremely windy, today is sunny and clear!!! I'm planning on working in the yard as long today as possible, after I finish my chores. The puppies are doing great but Bob & I are dragging due to interrupted sleep. We probably need to sleep for 16 hours straight but that will never happen around here. We bred Sweet Tater Pie to Jazzman yesterday and if all goes well, we will be offering these pups to people under "very strict special circumstances". She's only going to be bred twice because we are only wanting a couple of puppies. We bred her once before but she went into labor early and lost all 10 of the puppies. She was just unable to carry that many puppies. Sweet Tater is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever known. Speaking of female Bullies, Reba is a tee totally demanding brat when it comes to food, Bob must be right about her being pregnant. She fussed at me something awful this morning when I started to fix their food, she wanted hers NOW!!!! I already had a headache so I reinforced her bad habit by tossing her two boiled eggs and a hunk of turkey to keep her quiet until I would dish up her regular food. She is just like her Grandmother, Sassy T, she know she can get by with being bad, just so long as she isn't toooo bad. Have a wonderful day and take time out to smell the flowers, they are so pretty in Spring.- Judy The three English bulldog puppies are walking--not just crawling along on their tummies... Count Basie, the little boy, has the best tail although the other two girls have great tails also. Their tails are short and curl just right. Count Basie is going to resemble his daddy, The Jazzman, in stature. Feedings are still three to four hours apart but are getting easier since they can find their way to the 'breakfast table' by themselves... ![]() Click on the picture for a larger copy. Bessie Smith, (English bulldog puppy of Miss 'B' and the Jazzman) has her eyes open! I am so excited! She has such a sweet and bewildered look. Meanwhile, the other two, Count Basie and Barbara Lea are 'left in the dark'... ![]() Click on the picture for a larger copy. Monday - 4/25/2005 - 9:30 A.M. CDT Bob is so funny. Normally it is 30-35 days after being bred that you are able to see a slight bugle which indicates that a female is "with puppies", but he has already decided Reba, bred to Peanut, is pregnant because she wants Miss B's babies, so very badly. I'm surely not going to dispute the logic. When Kate, mother of Juliet and grandmother of Jelly, was let out to potty and she growled at my Angel who was bigger than she we always knew that meant she was pregnant. She wasn't been aggressive just warning her to stay away. It was strange in that she didn't growl at the other dogs her size or smaller. I suppose she felt they wouldn't bother her "babies", or if they tried she could handle them. Dogs never cease to amaze me. The high for today is suppose to be 70 so I'm going to work outside most of the day. I hope you will make this day the best that it can be for you and those you love. - Judy The largest female puppy, Bessie Smith, is peeking at me... Her eyes are just beginning to open! All three are healthy and staying FAT! Mama bulldog, Miss 'B', is very easy to keep still while her puppies nurse. We do have a possessive Reba who thinks that the puppies should be hers. (She's barely pregnant.) So every three hours, I bring the puppies to Miss 'B' but Reba wants a turn and gets rather 'mouthy' about it. I told her that she had to wait... ![]() Click on the picture for a larger copy. Mother Nature is in a snit!!! It turned off cold and the low tonight is suppose to be 31 according to the National Weather Websites, but our local radio weather forecaster is saying the low will be 36. I surely hope the later is correct since it would totally exhaust me to bring inside all my plants. The Bullies won't budge, it's like they know the temperature is about to drop drastically and they are determined to stay put. I let 3 out at the same time to potty this morning and they were back at the door before I could put their food out for them. Spoiled brats!! Hope you have a Good Weekend, stay warm.- Judy The three puppies are doing very well. They should be opening their eyes soon... The feeding schedule has stretched out -- every three hours instead of two. You remember that the parents are Miss 'B' and The Jazzman. So, I thought that it would be appropriate that the puppies' names should be 'jazz' people that start with 'B'. Logical? The names are (starting from the front) Barbara Lea (jazz singer), Bessie Smith (jazz and blues singer), and Bill 'Count' Basie! ![]() Friday - 4/22/2005 - 8:00 a.m. CDT Just as our souls begin to wither, along
comes Spring and rejuvenates us and it's a good thing, because the weed pulling and grass mowing
begin. (lol lol) Isn't this Iris a beauty. I bought it at a Flea Market for a quarter, 3 years
ago. This is the first year it has gotten enough sun to bloom (tree removal). I've bought 15 tubs with rope handles at Wal-Mart to use as planters for my Brugmansia (Angel's Trumpets) and fortunately I bruised my heel therefore we haven't completed the project. Fortunate in that the low is suppose to go down to 33 on Saturday night and these smaller pots are much easier to move that those 25 gallon tubs. Jeb is being grouchy this morning. When we tried to rush 'our gang' going out to potty, he refused. I had to carry the 'fat pig' out to a dog run and there he stood, not even thinking about doing his business until it started to rain and I rushed out to get him. I could just hear him say, "Humans are so hard to train. I knew it was gonna rain". Have a Good Day and a Wonderful Weekend!!! - Judy Both yesterday and today I made long trips to different "big cities" for supplies. Yesterday it was a 3 hour round trip for dog food and today it was a 90 mile round trip for pots and potting soil for my plants, plus turkey for "our gang". I got canned puppy food to mix in with their soaked food but also bought a couple of turkeys for turkey stew and gravy. Speaking of which, I get email saying they read my recipes but wondered if it would be OK to feed to their Bully since their vet said dry dog food only. Do they really think I would have the recipe on the website and tell everyone I feed it to 'our gang' if I thought they shouldn't or are they trying to tell me I'm wrong. Whichever, I just press 'Delete'. lol lol Grunt, grunt, grunt go the puppies when they are eating. So funny and so cute. Both Mama Bully and babies are doing well. Meanwhile, Jazzman is all tired from making trips to the vet with another female, Delta Dawn. Delta has been bred twice before without having a litter of pups so we are not hopeful that this union will result in puppies but thought we would try one more time. Take care and have a good night. We're going to try to get in an hour nap before it's 'potty time' again. - Judy Going on Day 5! Miss 'B' is a good mother -- Since she is a real English bulldog puppy mothershe is a VERY GOOD one!. She is aware of her brood (three puppies) and makes sure that she doesn't step on one. She lets them nurse as long as they want which can be up to 45 minutes and longer... When she washes them, she is gentle (for an English bulldog). Yesterday, I took her to the vet for a check up. She had not been eating and during the previous night, she vomitted what she had drunk. The vet decided that her bladder was too full (which he emptied) and put her on electrolytes. That did the trick... She's back to her old self. This picture of Miss 'B' in the kiddy pool is how she looks as she waits for her puppies... Isn't she the prettiest English bulldog mother that you have ever seen?![]() Tuesday - 4/19/2005 - 4:00 A.M. CDT Awake and can't go back to sleep. Our vet said Miss B might have a bruised bladder as a result of the c-section. He expressed her bladder which were full, gave her an antibiotic shot and a electrolyte drink mix. She ate late yesterday afternoon and last night so we feel much more comfortable about her condition. When a Bully hesitates about eating but finally does and it results in an "up-chucking" episode and after several hours they still refuse to eat, an immediate visit to the vet is in order. Miss B's temperature was normal but had it been higher than normal we would have considered it an emergency. Going back to bed now - Judy The below are links to two new articles I've written on Behavior Problems in Dogs, not just Bullies. - Excessive Crate Time Causes Behavior Problems Interrupted sleep is about to catch up with us, we'll get grouchy, then realize that we are and get over it. Miss B is sick, she can't keep food down so we'll be taking her to the vet this morning. Meanwhile, life goes on and the grass needs mowing. I'm sure Bob will write 'Nursery News" later today.- Judy Sunday - 4/17/2005 - 8:30 p.m. CDT - Nursery News, By Bob... Going on Day 3! All three puppies -- English Bulldog Puppies! -- are gaining weight and are crawling around looking for a warm meal... The routine is: Half an hour of nursing followed by a two hour nap. If I'm late, Miss 'B' whimpers, grumbles, and then barks! She's usually about 5 minutes early but you know how mothers are... All three have bulldog underbites! Can you see it in the picture? Barbara Lea, the white headed one, has the cutest little lower jaw sticking out! ![]() Sunday - 4/17/2005 - 4:30 A.M. CDT The puppies are so funny. It takes them for forever to get full and all the while they are just grunting away, reminding me of the pleasure sounds I make when Bob rubs my back after a long day of hard physical labor. Just feels good!! Miss B is an excellent mother, but even so all it takes is a few seconds for her to accidently mash one this young. Whenever the pups are nursing one of us has to be alert and within reach. Bob is so good about taking care of the puppies since I have an old neck injury which is aggravated by holding it in a downward position for long. It's about time to let 'our gang' out to potty, but I'm trying to let Bob sleep just a little longer. Going out to potty, quickly becomes a noisy affair. - Judy The three puppies are nursing quite well. This session lasted almost an hour. The feeding is being done in a Wal-Mart kiddy pool ($6.99) lined with white sheets. Miss B's nipples are rather large (this is not her first litter...) but the puppies don't mind. Once they latch on, they don't let go. I do have to monitor Miss B continuously. She has a tendency to start cleaning the puppies up before they have finished nursing. This causes the pups to 'lose their place' but not for long. The darkest pup is the male, the other two are females. Saturday - 4/16/2005 - 9:00 A.M. CDT English Bulldog Puppies doing fine. Miss B and the three 'babies' are doing just fine. Of course Judy & Bob didn't get much sleep last night. About 4 this morning, I told Bob I had a horrible headache and pushed him out of bed to go feed the puppies. The first half of the night we had them in the bedroom with us and when they got hungry they would start to cry and that would wake us up. The problem was that every sound they made woke us up. The second part of the night Bob left them downstairs so we relied on an alarm clock. The clock wasn't necessary Miss B heard them crying and barked until she woke me up and I pushed Bob out of the bed. At this age they are having to be fed about every 2 hours. Reba was recently bred to Peanut but we won't know until 5/6 if she is 'with pups' or not. If she is pregnant the pups will be born the first part of June. It's chilly here this morning but the sun is out and it is a fine Spring Day. I hope you have equally grand weather and will be able to get outside to enjoy it. - Judy Bob took the pictures the least I can do is post them. I didn't get my nap
![]() Friday - 4/15/2005 - 1:12 P.M. CDT Long about Noon, Miss B had 3 "babies" delivered via c-section. We're holding our breath because the first 3 days are critical. Mother is doing fine and Jazzman slept through everything. Bob woke me up early saying he thought Miss B was ready to go into labor, so I hurriedly dressed and went downstairs. Sure enough she was acting whiny and talking to me... Bob thought she was trying to tell us she was about to have "babies" but I thought she wanted turkey since she was licking her lips. When I offered her turkey she gobbled it down. At this point, Bob and I both thought he was wrong so we took the rest of 'our gang" out to potty. Normally a female about to go into labor will not eat. I noticed Miss B was looking for a place to potty so out we went for a long walk. She sniffed the ground and I pulled up weeds. When we finally came back in the house I told Bob that Miss B was panting a little but so was I, we had wandered around a pretty good bit. I kept an eye on her as I worked in the kitchen, I stopped panting but she didn't ... time to take her temperature. It was 99 degrees, normal for a dog is 103, and when it starts to drop that is a sign that it is "show time". I called the vet's office and caught Dr Frank just as he was about to leave the office to go tend to a herd of cattle. He agreed to wait and we rushed getting her there. Just barely in time because one of the pups was already in the birth canal. If they are trapped there too long they will die, but she is just fine. Whew!! Enough excitement for one day. I've already sent emails to two of the people who are next in line to get puppies and will be sending to the third just as soon as I can think of who they are. If any of these three do not want to get a pup at this time, then I will open selection up on a first come basis to the people who have already been approved to be a Puppy Parent. I'm exhausted, time for a nap. - Judy Judy's Journal - March, 2005 Judy's Journal - February, 2005 Judy's Journal - January, 2005 Judy's Journal - December, 2004 Judy's Journal - November, 2004 Judy's Journal - Pictures Only, November, 2004 Judy's Journal - October, 2004 |
