SHELTIES OR OTHER HEARDING DOGS These breeds and other dogs have a genetically determined sensitivity to Ivermectin! Discuss the use of Ivermectin in herding breeds with the veterinarian before using this product in these breeds and consider alternate therapies if there is any uncertainty regarding the safety issue. 1/22/2005 Washington State University Veterinary School developed a DNA test for a mutant gene which produces adverse reaction to ivermectin and other medications in some dogs. They have discovered that 75% of Collies, 25% of Border Collies , 8% of Old English Sheep dogs, mixed dogs of these breeds, plus other breeds have this mutant gene. Ivermectin is not approved to be used in this manner, therefore consult with your veterinarian before you utilize Ivermectin therapy in the treatment of scabies in dogs. Although it has been used for a number of years, it simply has not been tested by the manufacturer and approved by the FDA to be used in this manner. Warning: if the wrong dosage is given, the pet can have a very serious and even fatal reaction to Ivermectin. The correct dose MUST be given and great care taken not to give too much. I received the instructions shown above from veterinary supply company about 10 years ago, but have been using basically the same recipe for 17 years. It has not harmed any of our critters and we are pleased with the results. Before creating this webpage I reseached the Internet to find additional information.
