Puppy Gal's Opinions On

I agree 100% that any female dog not being used in a responsible breeding program should
be spayed, however ..... I disagree with the timing, prior to the first heat or
at 5 months of age, as recommended by most Vets. I believe, the
veterinary community decision for spaying before the first heat because it reduces the
risk of mammary cancer later in life, does NOT take into consideration the maturity level
of the female or the development of the bone structure which is characteristic of a Bulldog.
From conversations with English Bulldog owners, I have come to the conclusion that a high percentage of females who were spayed before the first heat remained a goofy immature personality, with a puppy physical appearance. If this is the type Bully you want then by all means spay before the first heat or at 5 months. BUT in my opinion a goofy immature puppy personality becomes disagreeable before long. Another point I would like to make is, since the early-spaying philosophy is relativity recent, it would be interested to see the results of a study on Bulldog joint and hip problems with a special interest on what percent were early-spayed or early neutering. Opposite Opinion: http://showdogsupersite.com/kenlclub/breedvet/neutr.html Information presented here is strictly my opinion based upon research and/or 50 years experience at rescuing animals of all sorts. Consult your vet and perhaps even get a second opinion from another vet about all you read on my website. |
